Does anyone have any ideas where this gentleman might look next? Tom Bombaci's NM Funeral Homes page (http://bombaci.rootsweb.com/NMFHomes.html) only lists one funeral home in Raton. I'm wondering how common it was for burials to be on family-owned land in those days, or whether that is not a likely occurrence. Would the cause of death, influenza, have any bearing on how and where someone would be buried? I found only two mentions of John Monroe Thorne. The first was on the LDS Web site, http://www.familysearch.org, and the second was a reference in Ancestry.com to Soldiers of the Great War from Georgia. The LDS site referenced an Ancestral File Number of G1JN-WL. There is also an entry for the IGI, and these may be identical. Ancestry.com lists page 215 of Volume I as the reference page for John Monroe Thorne, but I couldn't find the name listed when I printed the page. It's one of those brick walls that we've all encountered. If anyone has a suggestion or an idea, will you please share it with Mr. Thorne? Thank you. Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: B. We were unable to locate my grandfather's grave but were able to find two newspaper articles. One of the articles mentioned that his funeral was at the parlors of Wickens & Johnson. We couldn't find anyone in town that recognized this name. We've looked on the internet and found a Wickens & Troupe. I'm wondering if maybe they have any affiliation with Wickens & Johnson funeral homes. Do you have any way of getting information on Wickens & Johnson and where their records might be located? I've not been able to find any specific information on your grandfather. Unfortunately, New Mexico didn't begin keeping vital records consistently until 1919. The Spanish Influenza Epidemic is what showed our State government that we needed to do so. I have found a list of cemeteries and some cemetery transcriptions (listing of people buried in each cemetery). It is laborious, but you may want to visit the cemetery transcriptions and search (Edit-->Find-->Thorne) for your grandfather's name. Raton is in Colfax County. You may also want to check Union County, which is adjacent to Colfax County. Find A Grave www.findagrave.com Among the best and biggest cemetery sites, Find A Grave lets you search 4.1 million grave records or look for specific cemeteries. You can also create virtual memorials and even add "virtual flowers" and a note to an ancestor's grave. Interment.net www.interment.net Our other favorite cemetery site puts online more than 3.2 million records from nearly 7,000 cemeteries worldwide. Browse transcriptions by region and check out special collections of veterans cemeteries. Obituary Central www.obitcentral.com Death is a lively topic here, with thousands of links to online obituaries; cemetery inscriptions; birth, marriage and death notices; and divorce records arranged by state and county, plus a collection of search engines that cover only obituaries. Access Genealogy www.accessgenealogy.com It's not just a useful online starting place, with genealogy-related news plus lots of links, but also a source for data. Researchers with Native American roots especially will want to explore the collection here, which includes the 1880 Cherokee census and the Final Rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes. Other resources cover military records, cemeteries, biographies, census records, immigration, African-American ancestry, vital records and more. Genealogy Resources on the Internet www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/internet.html The Web isn't the only way to research your family tree online; don't forget mailing lists, newsgroups, telnet and Gopher, technologies that predated today's ubiquitous WWW. This in-depth list, compiled and still continuously updated by Chris Gaunt and John Fuller, covers all those other ways to plug into your roots, as well as Web sites. Genealogy Today www.genealogytoday.com A useful stop wherever you are in your genealogical journey: Resources and how-to information are categorized for those just getting started, those who've been researching for several years and are mostly interested in recent generations, those who've already traced their families back multiple generations, and advanced genealogists (including professionals, librarians and educators). German Roots www.home.att.net/~wee-monster In addition to being a terrific starting point for pursuing your German ancestors, this handy site includes lists of links to US military records and death records of interest to all genealogists. Heraldry on the Internet www.digiserve.com/heraldry Also of interest to British Isles researchers, this site offers the best crash course on coats of arms on the Internet. Hello, Wild Bunch. The NMDI project has been a boon to many New Mexico researchers. I do not believe in pushing contributions, but thought I'd mention one way I have of making a painless contribution. There's an envelope on my desktop where I save cancelled stamps to send Sam-Quito, which he sells for funding for the NMDI project. Most of us are on tight budgets, but for the cost of sending an envelope with used stamps, I can help the project. If anyone is interested in participating, here's Sam-Quito's address. Sam-Quito Padilla G., P. O. Box 114, La Joya, NM 87028-0114 It is my understanding that the project can use volunteers to transcribe records for the NMDI and the NM census transcriptions. If you have some time and energy, contact Sam-Quito: vasosi3@yahoo.com. Thank you for all you do to support free genealogy research in NMGenWeb! Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ellen Pack" <e.j.pack@natchezbelle.org> To: <STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2005 9:25 AM Subject: [STATE-COORD] MSGenWeb Seminar Report "Researchin' Mississippi" A genealogy workshop was presented by MSGenWeb volunteers at the new Brandon Public Library, Brandon, Rankin County, MS on April 16, 2005. The event was coordinated by MSGenWeb CC Jackie Rhodes. It was sponsored by The Rankin County Historical Society, and The Friends of the Brandon Library, with special assistance by library contact Jonelle Anderson. The goal was to help raise funds for the new Genealogy Room. Approximately 22 MSGenWeb volunteers and family members from around the country attended and/or participated in the day long event. Others who could not attend were extremely helpful in the preparation. This was truly a whole state effort. The turnout was excellent, and the reviews have been great. This seminar is the fourth such activity in which MSGenWeb has participated over the years. That's a tremendous tribute to each and every MSGW volunteer. It's not an easy task to pull something like this together via a mail list and an occasional phone call, sometimes scurrying at the last minute to solve an unexpected problem. Yet the MSGenWeb volunteers accomplished it well. They helped a lot of researchers, made new friends, and had a *lot* of fun and laughs in the process. I am honored to be State Coordinator for such a great group of volunteers.
