He was born April 1, 1924 in Des Moines, New Mexico. "Curly" as he was fondly known to his family and friends served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II where he was a member of the Underwater Demolition Team (MDT-4). He retired as an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer from White Sands Missile Range; was a member of the Wildlife Conservation Association and was an instructor for the New Mexico Hunters Safety Program. Those left to mourn his passing include two sons, Billy Cox of Rockport, Texas, Bruce Sherman and wife Carolyn of Seattle, Washington; three daughters, April Jackson and husband Bill, Beverly Baum all of Las Cruces, Martha Baum-Vessell and husband Wesley of Huntsville, Texas; a sister, Anna L. Manley of Henderson, Kentucky. Other survivors include thirteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Estella Baum; his wife, Alta Lorraine Baum; a son, James "Dale" Baum; three brothers, Ralph, Raymond and Hugh Baum; three sisters, Mabel Berry, Bessie Burt and Eva Ferguson. Visitation for "Curly" will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road where the Funeral Service will follow at 2 p.m.. Concluding Service and Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho with military honors accorded by a United States Naval Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League - El Perro Diablo Detachment. Serving as casket bearers will be Curtis, Matthew and Louis Baum, Wesley Vessell, Barry Smith, Aaron Mitchell and Mike Ferri.
