Fleissner, 91, of Las Cruces, entered eternal rest August 06, 2010 at his residence. He was born October 31, 1918, in Waco, Texas, to Leopold E. Fleissner and Agnes Kosteke Fleissner. He earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from New Mexico A&M (now New Mexico State University) in 1941. After college, he worked for Stoddard Aircraft in Hollywood, Calif. In 1944 Mr. Fleissner entered the US Navy in the airborne radar program. The US Navy sent him to radar school at Harvard and MIT, then on assignment to Kaneohe, Hawaii. Following his discharge in 1946, he helped organize the electrical research division at the New Mexico A&M Physical Science Laboratory (PSL), where he remained through October 1948, at which time he started the firm of Crown Engineering, an early commercial electronic engineering and manufacturing company in Albuquerque. Crown Engineering did business with Sandia National Laboratories, the National Bureau of Standards, Los Alamos National Laboratories, White Sands Missile Range, the Boeing Company, and Hughes Aircraft Co. Among his projects were field work on the Titan I missile project as well as work at Cape Canaveral. In! 1974, he moved to Elephant Butte to begin a career in real estate, home building, and electrical contracting. In 1992, he married his former college sweetheart, Eunice Norby, and moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., and began many years of traveling, going nine times to Europe, plus China, Mexico, Jamaica, South Africa, and in the United States - from Seattle to Maine. In all, he visited 35 countries and every state except Alaska. Eunice died in October 2001, and he returned to Las Cruces in October 2002. Throughout his career, his love of radio, electronics and communications reigned supreme, and he was a radio amateur ("ham radio operator") for most of his life, with call sign W5GEQ. He is survived by one son, Dr. Paul Fleissner, and wife, Dr. Rachel Fleissner, both medical doctors in Fargo N.D.; one daughter, Holly A. Fleissner, and husband, Richard Peterson, of Silver City; one sister, Vivienne Becchetti, and husband, Fred Becchetti, of Annandale, Va., two grandchildren, Sage Peterson, a student at NMSU, and Merrit Peterson of Silver City; and one niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Eunice Norby of Santa Barbara; by one brother, Paul Fleissner, who died in 1944 during WWII; one sister, Lucille Tyson; and Betty L Kinscherff-Fleissner, mother of his children. Despite his 91 years, he wanted to be remembered for his saying, "The only thing wrong with life is it is too short - it is all very interesting!" A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Mission Lutheran Church in Las Cruces, with the Rev. Robert Carabotta officiating. A reception will follow in the clubhouse at the Onate Green Mobile Home Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88001 or Mission Lutheran Church, 2752 Roadrunner Parkway, Las Cruces, NM 88001.
