He was the son of Benjamin Remley and Florence Eisemann Remley and was born on December 19, 1917 in Negaunee, Michigan. He spent much of his youth in Marquette, MI. He started a paper route at a very young age, delivering the Marquette Mining Journal. In high school, he delivered telegrams for Western Union and earned his first amateur radio license with call letters W9WEH. After graduation from Baraga High School, he went to Gemology school in Chicago. In 1937, he joined the US Coast Guard and served on the USCG cutter Escanaba. He later served in US operations in the Caribbean guarding the shipping lanes that supplied raw materials from South America for the US war effort during World War II. He graduated from courses at the USN Fleet Sound School and the USCG Radio School. Norman earned a commercial radio license and achieved the rank of Chief Radioman in the USCG. He retired from the USCG in! Ft. Stanton, NM in 1948. Norman later worked at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico as an electronics technician and worked on a variety of missile and electro-magnetic effects programs before retiring from WSMR in 1976. Norman married Elsie Pakkala from Sault Ste. Marie MI and lived in Organ, where they built a home and raised three children. He was a founding member of the Organ Community Center and served for 12 years as the volunteer fire chief of the Organ fire department. He was also involved in other community activities, including the water and sewer association and the translator service that provided television reception to the town. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Stenglein Pirolo and nephew John (Renée) Pirolo, children Sharon Bütz, Donna (Roy) Swedlund, and Dennis (Jeri) Remley, and his grandchildren Suzanne (Derek) Thuecks, Jeffrey (Julia Dettinger) Bütz, Kayla and Brett Swedlund, and Chris and Chase Remley. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 18 at 10 a.m. at La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home in Las Cruces, followed by interment at the Organ cemetery. The family would like to thank everyone who has provided support during this time.
