He was born to Josefa and Jesus Fernandez on November 04, 1921 in Las Cruces, NM. Charlie served his country honorably, with the U.S. Army, during WWII. After returning from the war he worked as a plumber for Dale Lane Plumbing. Mr. Lane was instrumental in sending him to a vocational plumbing school in Chicago. After working several years with Dale Lane Plumbing, he operated his own business for over 25 years. He was also a volunteer fire fighter with the City of Las Cruces. He was a member of the Las Cruces Blue Sox baseball team during the late 40's. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing at his favorite locations, Red River and Willow Creek. He is survived by his daughter Katherine (Trinka) O'Neill of Las Cruces, Susan Fernandez of Albuquerque, NM, Linda Riviera of League City, TX and Anna of California; and son, Danny of Las Cruces; grandchildren, Sean O'Neill and Christopher Fernandez of Las Cruces; Matthew Riviera, with the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland; Victoria Riviera of The Hague, Netherlands; Son-in-law, Tom O'Neill of Las Cruces. He is also survived by his sisters, Margaret Apodaca, Elvira Esparza and Elisa Fernandez; brothers, Jesus and Richard Fernandez. He is also survived by the mother of his children Lilia Fernandez of Las Cruces, NM. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Amelia Nabor and Lupe Fernandez; and brothers, Julian, Reyes and Arturo. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Baca's Funeral Home, 300 E. Boutz Road. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, 1240 Espina, Las Cruces. The rite of committal and interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, Fort Bliss, TX with full military honor.
