Hale, 71, died August 24, 2010, after a long battle with chronic leukemia. He was born, along with his twin sister Gwenn, in Twin Falls, Idaho, on January 27, 1939, to Seymour "Bill" Hale and Velda Buckley Hale. Mr. Hale graduated from Payette High School in Payette, Idaho, in 1957. He spent seven seasons as a smokejumper, fighting fires for the U.S. Forest Service, based out of McCall, Idaho, and Silver City, N.M. From 1963 to 1965, he served in the U.S. Army Airborne as a parachute instructor. He held a Master Parachute Rigger certification, and for many years was a licensed pilot. He married Terry Lynelle Dinwiddie on the H-Y Ranch, near her hometown of Cliff, N.M., on April 30, 1966. For the first two years of their marriage, they lived on an air base in Savannakhet, Laos, where he worked for Continental Air Services, contracted with the Central Intelligence Agency. Upon their return to the United States, he earned his bachelor's degree in business and real estate from the University of Arizona. Through Hale Construction, he designed and built nearly 500 custom homes throughout Tucson. His largest project was the Sunny Hills development on the north side of town. After moving to Payson in 1981, Mr. Hale worked as a construction superintendent and site manager for several companies. It's hard to drive through Payson without seeing one of his projects: a 48-unit condo complex, a 60-unit apartment building and the 1985 expansion of Payson schools, and more. From 1990-1994, he was general manager of UMOS (later called Brooke Utilities), and served as a consultant there until 2001. He was a capable man who enjoyed tackling problems, especially for the benefit of young athletes. He coached many youth basketball and baseball teams, and used his construction skills and contacts to improve sports facilities here and in Tucson. Mr. Hale was the volunteer project manager for the 1987 PHS softball and baseball fields, but he also worked on snack bars, locker rooms, water systems, a Greyhound travel bus, scoreboards and the PHS track. After his work at the Pioneer Elementary School playground, a short "scenic parkway" was jokingly named in his honor. In their "retirement," the Hales built and operated A Storage Place, the RV and boat storage yard in the airport industrial park. He and his wife spent a few months each year on the road, visiting grandchildren across the country. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Terry Hale; son Jupe Hale (Debbie) of Plymouth, Minn.; daughters Sandie Jo Felice (Louie) of Boise, Idaho, Niki Price (Dave) of Lincoln City, Ore., and Colleen Cunningham (Michael) of Bend, Ore.; and nine grandchildren: Alex and Matthew Mischo; J.J., Connor and Charlie Hale; Margery and Ethan Price; and Haley and Logan Cunningham. Mr. Hale also leaves behind two brothers, Alan Hale of Cheney, Wash., and Bill Hale of Caon City, Colo., and two sisters, Gwenn Clem of Goldendale, Wash., and Barbara Wharton of Spokane, Wash. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Mountain Bible Church, 302 E. Rancho in Payson, Ariz. Glenn's friends and colleagues are invited to a potluck reception, immediately following the service, at Ramada Four at Rumsey Park. His ashes will be interred in the Dinwiddie family plot at Mesa Cemetery in Cliff, N.M. That ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2010. Memorial donations may be made to the Payson High School Stadium Fund, Payson Unified School District, P.O. Box 919, Payson, AZ 85547. In the memo line, write "Glenn F. Hale Memorial."
