Smith died peacefully on October 31, 2010 at home in the company of his wife, son, and daughter-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; Ted and Orene Smith, brothers Wendell and Terry, a son David Lee, a daughter Davorie, and son-in law Dennis. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marge Smith; siblings: Bob and Eva Smith and family; Bobbie Smith and family; Nedra and Joe Hobbs and family; three children: Alvin, Daveen, and Joe D. and their spouses; eleven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. David medically retired from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1955 after 23 years. He had been moved by the railroad to Rincon, NM many times. Marge and he fell in love with the Hatch valley area and the wonderful people. David and Marge bought the ugly little farm on Rincon Road in 1979 on their 10th anniversary. Working hard they transformed the "ugly little farm" into the place that people in the Hatch valley admired. He learned to love Matanzas and pit cooking. David, a man of all trades, loved his wife, family, his poetry, music, hunting, fishing, and raising calves. He was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #4308 instituted June 1992, and the first worthy president. The family would like to thank Mesilla Valley Hospice and a special thanks to Jon LaVertu for the love of David's poetry and especially the poem, "A Gal Named Sue." The family appreciates Jon's compassionate and expert care of David, making the last years of his life as comfortable as possible. Respecting David's wishes, he will be cremated and no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in David's name to Mesilla Valley Hospice or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are with La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home.
