Helen was born January 23, 1918 in Wood County, Ohio, to Helena and John Vermilya. Helen graduated High School in Bowling Green, Ohio and Toledo Nursing School in 1939. She married Robert Rethmel and the two settled in Dayton, Ohio. They moved to Alamogordo, NM in 1956 where she was a school nurse and very active in the Girl Scouts and First Presbyterian Church. For the past three years Helen was a resident of the Village at Northrise in Las Cruces, N.M. She led a full life and was an inspiration to everyone she met. She was admired for her personality and her deep commitment to friends, family and community service. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Rethmel, and brother's Bob Vermilya and Tom Vermilya. Survivors include a brother Jack Vermilya of Greenville, Ohio, and a sister Ruth Budd of Eagle Point, Oregon son, Jim Rethmel of Ft. Worth, Texas (wife Carol), a daughter, Patty Dunlap of Las Cruces (husband Jerry), five grandchildren; Jeff Rethmel (wife Dana) of Newman, Georgia, Brian Dunlap (wife Shanna) of Hobbs, N.M., Amber Jimenez (husband Marcus) of Amarillo, TX, Steve Dunlap of Silver City, N.M., Jerome Rethmel of Albuquerque, N.M., and six great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 26, at 2:00 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church of Alamogordo. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Alamogordo at 14th and Oregon.
