He was born on May 17, 1931 to Federico and Elvira Marquez. From a young age Art felt the need to serve his country, Volunteering for Service during the Korean War at age 17, deployed, and later redeployed after his father told the Army he was only 17. After the Korean War, Art continued his military career in the Army Reserves earning many Medals and Awards, US Army Reserve Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (X2), Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (X2), Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (X4), Army Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert Qualification Badge (M-16). He was ordered to active duty in support of Operation desert Shield/Storm after which he retired on May 21, 1991. In 1958 Art became the first Chief of Police at New Mexico State University and received a Medal of Distinction award in 2008 ! for his service. Art also worked at White Sands Missile Range as a Senior Industrial Security Specialist retiring on March 17, 1998. In his free time he would volunteer with numerous organizations. Art is survived by his daughters, Pauline M. Marquez of Phoenix, AZ, Cynthia M. Marquez, Belinda K. Rivera and Husband Gary and Rosemarie Marquez all of Las Cruces, NM, sons, Art Marquez and wife Rosemarie and Danny Marquez all of Las Cruces, NM, sisters, Victoria Pyle of Las Cruces, NM and Martha Mirabal of Anthony, NM, brother, Mike Marquez of Chaparral, NM, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Art is preceded in death by his daughter Patricia Ann Marquez. A memorial service to celebrate Art's life will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Getz Funeral Home with Pastor Ruben Ortega officiating.
