He began this life on September 19, 1914 and quietly crossed into a new life on November 28, 2010 at his home in Mesilla Park surrounded by his family. He was honored by many as "Don Genaro" and served in life as a farmer in the Mesilla Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita Lucero DiMatteo; a daughter, Alice Sanchez. Survivors include two daughters, Minerva Belczak and husband Tom, Christina DiMatteo; three sons, Edward DiMatteo and wife Elizabeth Camuñez, James DiMatteo and wife Mary Ray, and Ernest DiMatteo and wife Lorraine Serna. Don Genaro had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Calling hours for Don Genaro will be held Thursday, December 2, 2010 from 6 PM to 8 PM in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road. A Prayer Vigil will be held Friday, December 3, 2010 at 10 AM with the Memorial Service to follow immediately thereafter in the same chapel with Reverend René Espejel officiating A Private Rite of Committal and Interment will take place in Masonic Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. Serving as casket bearers will be Joe Raymond, Ernest, Edward, Anthony and Robert DiMatteo and Aurelio Romero. Don Genaro will be loved, cherished and remembered by the legacy of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment. He served as an example to many people while caring for family, friends, and the needy. Many throughout the Mesilla Valley and across the country whom he inspired by his devotion to the land and whose lives and heart he touched will miss him.
