He was born March 22, 1923 in Las Cruces to Nemesio and Galfira Duran Chavez. Mr. Chavez served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II, and was the owner and operator of Sinclair Service Station. Mr. Chavez was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include his loving wife, Matilda Valles Chavez of the family home; two sons, Joe Phillip Chavez and wife Judy of Jackson, Mississippi, Ronald Ray Chavez and wife Shirley of Tucson, Arizona; three daughters, Minerva De La Cruz and husband David of Amarillo, Texas, Pamela Doreen Washburn, Michelle Lynn Sanchez and husband Chris all of Las Cruces; three brothers, Teodosio, Leandro and Enrique Chavez all also of Las Cruces; two sisters, Maggie Rel of Las Cruces and Mary Lopez of Pico Rivera, California. Other survivors include twelve grandchildren, Jason Chavez and wife Misty, Jeremy Chavez and wife Eugenia, Roman Chavez, Andrew and Zack Del La Cruz, Johnathan, Matthew, Miykayah and Jabin Washburn, Leah Hungate, Rebekah and Michael Villa, Jr. ; two great grandchildren, Haili and Johnny and one on the way, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Felipe Chavez; a sister, Augustina Chavez. At Mr. Chavez' request cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 2 PM in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 6265 Reynolds Drive with Elder Larry Hinojosa presiding. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 6265 Reynolds Drive, Las Cruces, NM 88011.
