Martha Roberta Bethea was born in Florence, SC on March 4, 1922, the daughter of William Nathan and Annie Galloway Bethea. During her childhood and school years, she lived with her parents and siblings in several small towns near Florence in northeast South Carolina. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in nursing. In 1944, Martha married Army 2nd Lt. Jackson L. Wilson; and during his military & civil service careers-plus retirement in Las Cruces, NM, they shared life (for over 58 years) in Japan, Germany, and several states in the U.S. Martha was devoted to serving her family and friends- always placing their welfare above hers. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Blue Bells Square Dance Club in Las Cruces. Martha's loving presence was cherished by all her family, and she will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, a sister, and a grandson and survived by her children, Anne (Roger) Lemon, Viola, KS; Jack (Candis) Wilson, Destin, FL; Nate (Selma) Wilson, Lubbock, TX; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Rosalie Goodson, Hartsville SC, Ohlyne Williamson, Greenville NC, and Peggy (Glenn) Freeman, Hartsville SC; one brother Bill (Erlene) Bethea, McColl SC; and many nieces & nephews. A family memorial service will be held in Bennettsville, SC on December 11th at 11:00AM. She will be interned with her husband at Barancas National Cemetery in Pensacola FL. During her lifetime, Martha supported the Connie Maxwell Children's Home (Pee Dee Campus P. O. Box 4194 Florence, SC 29502) where her mother was raised. Arrangements have been entrusted to Twin Cities Cremations and Funeral Services, 1405 E John Sims Pkwy, Niceville, FL 32578.
