Nancy was born to Mary Lynne and Phillip Reade Watlington on July 5, 1929 in Paris, Kentucky. After spending her childhood in rural Bourbon County, Kentucky, Nancy graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Home Economics. Nancy's career as an extension home economist began in Orlando, Florida. It was there that she met William "Bill" Riley. They both loved cars, car racing and the ocean. After their 1953 wedding in Paris, Kentucky, Nancy continued her work as an extension agent in Eugene, Oregon. By 1960, Nancy and Bill moved to Las Cruces. While serving as an extension home economist in Doña Ana County, Nancy completed her master degree in Education, Counseling and Guidance from NMSU. Nancy became the administrative head of the Doña Ana County Cooperative Extension Service in 1978 and served the county for 28 exceptional years as the county extension home economist and county director. Nancy was a well-known regional artist. She received inspiration for her oil painting from her heart as well as from the southwest culture. Nancy took the opportunity to travel during her retirement years. She loved Mexican food, sunsets, and the people of New Mexico. Her husband, Bill preceded her in death in 1980. She is survived by her daughters, Jeanne Riley Davis and Patricia "Patti" Riley; a son, William Casey Riley. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who were close to her. Cremation will take place at Baca's Sunset Crematory and will be followed by a small gathering of friends at a later date at her home in Picacho Hills.
