Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Gustave Andersen and Laurena Fernow; he attended schools in North Dakota and Illinois and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York City. After enlisting in the Army and serving in Korea from 1946-1948, he enrolled at Yale University where he studied physics. While working on a Yale research project in Jamestown, Rhode Island he met his wife Anne Comfort of Toronto, Canada. They were married in Williamstown, Massachusetts in January 1955. Clarke was a product engineer with the Sprague Electric Company for over 30 years. He took an early retirement moving to Las Cruces in 1987 to be near his parents Dr. Andrew and Laurena Fernow Babey. He had a life long passion for photography. As a student he was a photographer for the Yale News under editor William Buckley and had a summer job photographing rocket tests for the Army at White Sands Proving Grounds. Always following the latest technology he went from developing and printing his own pictures to digitally editing them on the computer. He enjoyed classical music, often attending the Las Cruces Symphony and the Santa Fe Opera. Both he and Anne enjoyed hiking and travel and loved to find hidden spots in rural New Mexico. Recently Clarke found a creative outlet working with clay at the Munson Center. Other interests included sports cars, computers, and literature. He will be greatly missed by his wife Anne and his sons, Michael and wife Anne of Essen, Germany, Peter and wife Nina of Hardwick, Massachusetts and Andrew and wife Mimi of Redondo Beach, California, his grandchildren Louise of Tubingen, Germany, Hendrik of Dusseldorf, Germany, and Cassandra of Worcester, Massachusetts, his sister Pamela Babey and David Wing of San Francisco, California and many cousins, nieces and nephews. We want to thank Mesilla Valley Hospice for their help at our home. Cremation was performed by La Paz - Graham Funeral Home. A memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Las Cruces Public Library.
