Austin, 92, passed away on April 3, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born to Robert S. Austin and Ruth E. Harris on April 15, 1918 in El Paso, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Marie M. Austin and his granddaughter, Marcella Gray of Austin, Texas. George Austin was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. He graduated from El Paso High School on January 21, 1937, where he had been an honor student and a Cadet Colonel in ROTC. George served his country faithfully for five years in the Army Air Corps during World War II at which time he earned the European-African- Middle Eastern Medal with three bronze stars and was discharged with the rank of First Sergeant. After his discharge, he worked as a real estate broker and insurance agent in El Paso, Texas, where he belonged to the Million Dollar Group Club for Aetna Life & Casualty (1965), worked for the El Paso Museum of Art, and was a member of the Plumbing Board of Exceptions and Revisions (1981). After moving to Las Cruces in 2003, he worked at the White Raven Art Studio and established an accounting/bookkeeping service. George is survived by a brother, Robert Austin of Texas; sons, George M. Austin and wife Melinda of Silver City, NM, Andrew Austin of California, and a daughter, Deborah Austin of Las Cruces, NM. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 2 PM in the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Boutz Road.
