Josie was born in Peñasco, New Mexico, to Fred Smith and Josefa Romero on November 13, 1924, and lived in Grant County nearly all of her adult life. Josie worked as a bailiff, and enjoyed jogging, swimming, and especially bingo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Fletcher. Josie is survived by her son, Michael Fletcher and his wife, Catherine, of Bayard; her daughter Patricia Schroeder and husband, Tony, of Portales; five grandchildren, Joey Blanton (Alandren) of Albuquerque, Heather Blanton of Cloudcroft, Diana (Jude) Gabaldon of Farmington, and John Fletcher and Michael W. Fletcher of Bayard, and five great-grandchildren, Israel, Abigail, Abram, Isaac, and Grace Gabaldon. Visitation will be at Baca's Funeral Chapels on Thursday, March 31, 2011 from 5-6pm. The prayer vigil will follow at 6pm with Joe Gutierrez leading the rosary. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, April 1, 2011 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard at 9am with Fr. Paulus Kao officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Heather Blanton, Joey Blanton, Alandren Etlantus-Blanton, John L. Fletcher, Michael W. Fletcher, and Tony Schroeder.
