Ahrens, 86, of Las Cruces passed away peacefully March 27, 2011. She was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1946 she married her husband of 61 years, Lee Ahrens, who preceded her in death. She spent the next 20 years as a career Army wife. They were always on the move, sometimes with Louise following Lee, as she twice traveled across the Atlantic Ocean by ship, with her children in tow. She fell in love with New Mexico while stationed in Albuquerque and was determined that she would return. They did return when Lee was later stationed at the Army Reserve Center in Las Cruces. Perhaps some of their happiest years were spent at Trout Valley, NM in the beautiful Gila Mountains where they built two homes and lived for nineteen years before returning to Las Cruces. Because of her love for her family, she always said she wanted to live to be a hundred. Louise is survived by one son Craig J. Ahrens of Belding, Michigan; two daughters, Ann M. Gomez and Joyce L. Gemoets (Gary) of Las Cruces, NM. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. A gathering of family and friends for a memorial service celebrating her life will be at Getz Funeral Home on Saturday April 2, 2011 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Don Shockley of Church on the Rock officiating. Louise will be laid to rest next to her loving husband Lee, at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. Her family would like to give special recognition and thanks to the wonderful staff at Casa Bella, as well as the equally wonderful staff and volunteers from Mesilla Valley Hospice. Arrangements by Getz Funeral Home corner of Solano and Bowman Ave., Las Cruces, Nm 526-2419.
