Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois, and after graduating from high school, he joined the United States Air Force, serving at the Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, for four years. After serving in the military, he returned to Southern Illinois and completed his Bachelor's degree in Speech. Jim went to Vanderbilt Law School in Nashville, Tennessee. After graduation he worked with a large law firm doing private practice where his primary focus was corporate law. Thereafter he elected to return to military service, this time as an officer and attorney, in the Judge Advocate General Corps. With the United States Army, until 1977 when he moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico to spend the rest of his life. Jim joined attorney T.K. Campbell in 1978 as a partner in the Las Cruces law firm; which, from 1978 to December 2004, carried his name. He remained the political and academic leader of his law firm, which at its peak, had 50 employees. During his legal career, Jim acted as a mentor, colleague, guide, and friend for numerous attorneys/judges throughout the state of New Mexico. He was rated by his peers as preeminent and received the highest designation as an AV lawyer, with the Martindale-Hubbell National Law Directory. He was a lawyer's lawyer, throughout his life. He joined his wife, Edith Reeves in the formation of Reeves and Reeves P.A. in December 2004. Jim is survived by his parents, Jeanne and Barney Reeves; his brother Ronald and wife Michelle; three children, Danielle Luther and husband Brian, Samantha Reeves, John Reeves and wife Vanessa; and grandchildren Sonnett, Kaitlin, Dylan, and Quentin, all of whom he loved very much. Edith Reeves was the love of his life; they enjoyed a lifetime of love and nearly 25 years of marriage together. Jim and Edith traveled extensively throughout the world and were members of a gourmet cooking group of friends. Jim was an avid reader, his knowledge wide and deep. He was always curious, loyal, and he loved his friends, partners, parents, children, and his wife. He will always be remembered with great affection and love. A memorial service will be held at Graham's Mortuary at 1pm on Monday, January 10th, 2011. Inurnment with full military honors will occur at 1pm Tuesday January 11th, at Ft. Bayard, New Mexico.
