He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Phyllis (nee Nay) and children, Kurt Steinhaus of Bisbee, Arizona and Heidi (Victor) Babin of LaPorte, Indiana, grandchildren Katrina (Eric) Beebe, Sarah Babin and Karl (Amanda) Steinhaus, and his sister, Inga (Paul) Henry. He had one great-grandson, Gavin and many nieces and nephews. Karl graduated from Merrillville High School in 1948 after having interrupted his education to serve in the United States Navy. Prior to retiring in 1980, he owned Steinhaus Builders. Karl was a member of the American Legions in Merrillville and Las Cruces, the Rotary Club of Tubac, Arizona, and enjoyed traveling with the Nomad RV Club of Las Cruces. Cremation will be at Martin Funeral Home in El Paso, Texas. A memorial service is planned for September in Merrillville, Indiana for his local friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests all donations be directed to the Cancer Resource Centre at 926 Ridge Road, Munster, Indiana, 46321. Services entrusted to Martin Funeral Home West, 128 N.
