Dede, or Dee as she liked to be called, was born to Max Thaten and Lina Richon Thaten on Nov. 19, 1922 at the family home on Silver Lake Road in Staten Island, New York. Dede graduated from Dongan Hall-Arden High School in Staten Island in 1940, where she played varsity hockey and basketball. She earned an associate's degree from Finch Junior College in Manhattan in 1942. During World War II, she worked in Manhattan, and served for a time in the Department of War. In August 1942, she married Lt. Robert Ayres Barnet III of the U.S. Navy and also of Staten Island. They had four children, who survive: Anne Alison Barnet of Boston, Mass.; Robert Ayres "Bobby" Barnet IV of Scaggsville, Md.; Christopher Dwight Barnet of Greenbelt, Md.; and Jeffrey MacNab Barnet of Las Cruces. She is also survived by her neice Jean Richon of Green Valley, Ariz.; nephews Peter, Jaime and Tom Killie of New York state; cousin Joan Zuhl of Las Cruces; and four grandchildren: Robert Ayres Barnet V of Seattle, Wash.; Jason Bryant of Poundbrook, N.J.; and Charlotte and Colby Francoeur, both of Greenbelt, Md. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, her half-brother Fritz Roethlisberger; half-sister Isa Roethlisberger Alf; her brother Carl Thaten; and her former husband. Dede was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Las Cruces. She was active in the civil rights movement, the anti-Vietnam war movement, and the feminist movement. She was a devotee and instructor of yoga. From 1979 to 1986, she owned the Village Bookstore, which specialized in children's books, in Mahomet, Ill. She moved to Las Cruces in 1986. A very kind and caring person, she will deeply missed by her many friends and by her family. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Las Cruces. Thank you to the many good caregivers from Home Instead and the Village at Northrise Morningside and Desert Willow staffs. Arrangements are being handled by Getz Funeral Home of Las Cruces.
