Born November 14, 1946 in Las Cruces, NM, Linda spent her life exploring the world, celebrating joy in her life, making good friends and serving others. After graduating from the University of New Mexico in 1970, Linda embarked on a career educating this country's children, serving as an elementary teacher for Santa Fe Public Schools for eight years, Department of Defense schools for nine years in Berlin, Germany and as a second grade teacher for fifteen years with the Truth or Consequences Municipal School District. Her former second graders were delighted by Ms. Phillips' visit on their graduation day, when she would bring photographs and samples of their work from ten years before. While in Germany, Linda participated heavily in Theatre, working as a make-up artist and actress. Her singing ability helped her land a lead role in a production of Chicago. Her travels in Europe, Asia and the Middle East helped develop in Linda a sense of celebration, vigor and understanding of the interconnectedness of the world's cultures. In her later years, Linda used her gifts to care for her elderly mother, enjoy time with her friends, work with the local Theatre organization and volunteer at the Elementary School's library - ensuring student access to books when the librarian was at another school. Linda also loved to swim. Her work was fundamental in the on-going efforts to get the community pool covered. Linda loved to sing, enjoyed art, good food and spirits and cultivating her lush gardens. Her soft spirit and gracious gift of listening were steady forces in the lives of her friends. Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Henry and Bertha L. Phillips. She is survived by her sister, Kathy Phillips; members of the Mays family from her mother's side; and members of the Powell family from her father's side of her family. Also surviving Linda are her life long friends, Julie Keene, Jennette Hanson and Syd Suttman, Jose Mesa and Heinz Weber and Julie Harris. Linda's love of life and kindness will also be missed by a host of other friends, her students and her community. Cremation will take place and a Memorial Celebration Service will be held on Monday, June 21, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Kirikos Family Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Bill Kohler officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Linda Phillips to the TorC Community Theatre, 311 N. Foch St., T or C, NM 87901. Arrangements are by Kirikos Family Funeral Home, Inc. & Sierra Crematory, LLC, 303 N. Cedar St., TorC. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
