Alfonso was born December 22, 1914 in Chamberino to Guillermo and Felipa Montano. He loved to tell and re-tell stories of his youth in Chamberino and of the joy and hardships he encountered growing up on his father's farm in a time when horse-drawn plows were still used. Alfonso used the farming skills he learned to farm in Chamberino, and Hill, New Mexico, and in Dell City, Texas. On January 13, 1940 Alfonso married Esperanza Maldonado and remained her husband until her death seventy years later. Alfonso is survived by his children Mary Teitsworth, Dolores Hendricks (Scotty), Roberta Parker (Gary), Elizabeth Decker (Tim), all of Las Cruces, Gloria Kasparian (David), Ray Montano (Linda) of Deming and Tom Montano (Rebecca) of Albuquerque. He was blessed with fourteen grandchildren, Michael Teitsworth, Joelle Teitsworth, Dianne (Kevin) Zachek, Mark (Malisa) Kasparian, Brian (Terry) Claar, Shane Hendricks, Anthony Montano, Jenell (Anouar) Rbati, Erik Parker, Sidney Montano, Nicholas Montano, Philip Olona, Andrew Decker, and Christopher Decker. He was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, Darian Zachek, Kamryn Zachek, Samuel Claar, Emma Claar, Reney Montano, and Jonathyn Olona. Mark Navarro also knew him as his Great-Grandpa. Alfonso is survived by his brothers Edward (Lalo) Montano of Las Cruces, and Carlos Montano of Ventura, California, and his sisters Minnie Harlow of Cypress, California, and Rosie Prevette of Las Cruces. His extended family includes many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and close neighbors that he loved and cared for deeply. Special persons also dear to Alfonso are Socorro Rivera and Minerva Miley, his long term caregivers who bestowed him with love and tenderness - going far above and beyond their duty as they cared for their "Don Alfonso". Alfonso is now reunited with his wife of seventy years, Esperanza Maldonado Montano, their first born child, Elma Angelina Montano and his granddaughter, Michelle Marie Teitsworth. Alfonso was also preceded in death by his sisters Helen Leggett and Benita Rice both of Las Cruces. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2010 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road, where the prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. The funeral mass and celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda St. The rite of committal and interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Garden Cemetery. Casket bearers and Honorary bearers will be his grandsons Michael Teitsworth, Mark Kasparian, Anthony Montano, Phillip Olona, Brian Claar, Shane Hendricks, Erik Parker, Andrew Decker, Christopher Decker, and Nicholas Montano. A special thank you to the staff of Good Samaritan Healthcare Center and emergency room nurse, Jamie of Memorial Medical Center.
