Doris will be buried with her husband in Fort Gibson Military Cemetery in Oklahoma. Visitation will be from 1:00pm to 8:00pm Monday, May 31, 2010. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.com Doris Mildred Thomas was born to Charles A. and Susan Elizabeth (Gibbs) Newby on June 26, 1921 in Grandfield, OK. In 1939 Doris married Tommy (Bill) Thomas. Bill Thomas was killed in WWII in 1945. Doris attended Western New Mexico University where she received her Bachelor's of Science and Master of Arts Degrees. Teaching was a major focus of her life; she taught in Ruidoso grade school for four years, and then taught grade school classes for over thirty three years in Douglas Arizona, and seven years at Cochise Junior College. Doris also taught in Vienna, Austria in a volunteer program. For many years she did volunteer tutoring in reading and English as a Second Language. Even after her retirement from teaching, she still volunteered at Hillcrest Elementary School and the Ann Wood Literacy Center. She moved to Carlsbad in 1997 and was a member of Fox and Lake Church of Christ. Christianity was the central part of her life, and a part of this was her correspondence teaching ! in the World Bible School. Doris is survived by: her son Tom Thomas and his wife Carol, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, granddaughter Lisa Hudson, and grandson David Thomas, and six great grandchildren.
