Through his life and death, Steven exemplified the unconditional and boundless love one can only pray to receive from a brother, son and uncle. This love for his family ran deep and constant, even in the face of adversity. He taught us the true meaning of love. Steven was born in Albuquerque and moved to Las Cruces in 1988. He graduated from Mesilla Valley Christian School and studied at DACC and NMSU, where he was a planning a career in medicine. In his 25 years of life, Steven became a gifted pianist and a skilled martial artist, achieving a level of mastery that would take most people a lifetime to duplicate. At every point in his live, the world fascinated Steven. He was never afraid to ask a question about a topic or subject, and he was relentless in searching for the answer. It would not be unusual to find Steven simultaneously reading a book on Eastern philosophy, a book on ancient battlefield tactics, a book on physics, and a book on the early doctors of the Christian Church. When Steven found his answer, he always asked another question and when he was confident that he mastered a subject or topic, Steven, much like his grandfather and namesake before him, eagerly taught others what he had learned. In these pursuits, Steven always studied both sides of any given argument or concept. He would only then take a position after careful and rigorous review. Steven respected the power of ideas and the strength of words, as every word he uttered and every thought he created was carefully measured and drawn from a passion to fully understand everything God created. Steven was fiercely loyal to the people he loved. He was an inspirational mentor, selflessly giving whatever was asked of to his friend whose lives will be forever improved by his wisdom, kindness and memory. Steven will be deeply missed and eternally loved by his family. He left behind a family who was proud of his courage, his perseverance, and his gentle heart. Steven is survived by his parents, Roderick and Geraldine Fields; his beloved sister, Clara Moran and husband Richard; his niece, Amalia and soon-to-be born niece, Magdalena; and his grandmother, Hope Fields. Steven leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Edward Fields and Joe Gabaldon; his maternal grandmother, Amalia Gabaldon, and his uncle, Daniel Gabaldon. Visitation for Steven will begin at 6 p.m. today, June 30, 2010 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road where the recitation of the holy rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Family and friends will join together to celebrate the funeral mass at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 01, 2010 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, 1240 S.
