Smith, 90, died June 25, 2010 in Las Cruces. He was born June 20, 1920 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the youngest of six children. His early life resembled a Steinbeck novel, as his family was forced to sell their farm during the Dust Bowl and Depression of the late 20's and 30's and moved to the Northwest. After spending time in the Army he graduated from college with a degree in geology. His independent spirit and sense of adventure took him throughout the world, particularly to Africa, the Middle East, South America, where he worked as an economic geologist. He met his wife "Eva" Maria Konrad in Germany, and they were happily married for 44 years until her death. They had a son Manfred ("Fred") and a daughter Heidi. Fred and his wife Laura live in Washington State, while Heidi lives with her husband Ron and son Bryn in Las Cruces. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home 555 W. Amador, to begin at 2:30pm, with buria! l to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
