See below. What information are you looking for ? Billy Earley's vision shines in Florence: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Arizona Daily Star, The (Tucson, AZ) - March 9, 1996 Deceased Name: Billy Earley's vision shines in Florence Florence resident Billy Earley, who made bandages for soldiers in two world wars and honored the memory of silent-screen star Tom Mix, died early Wednesday. She was 107. Earley, whose long history of community service drew attention far beyond her Pinal County town of Florence, suffered a stroke Tuesday. She died the next day at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. The stroke came two days after Earley, known for her sharp wit and energy that seemed to barely diminish with age, served as grand marshal of the Founders Day Parade in Florence. ''I've met (Calvin) Coolidge, (Franklin) Roosevelt and Harry Truman, but this will be my first inauguration,'' the Democratic Party activist said at the age of 104, when she flew to Washington, D.C., to see Bill Clinton sworn in as president. Earley, a native of New York City who moved to Florence in 1929, wrapped bandages and taught Red Cross first-aid classes during World War I and II. She outlived two husbands, including her second spouse, longtime Pinal County sheriff and assessor Lynn Earley, who died in 1981. She reared three children, taught Sunday school, raised funds for crippled youngsters, hiked the Grand Canyon as a Girl Scout leader and helped preserve Pinal County history, most recently though efforts to restore the old Silver King Hotel in Florence. ''She had a feeling of responsibility to make a difference in the world,'' said her daughter-in-law, Doris Earley. Billy Earley put it another way in a 1989 interview: ''I have been privileged to serve God and country and community. But I do these things because I'm selfish. I enjoy doing them, and they keep me busy.'' In 1980, Earley led a fund-raising drive that persuaded Florence officials to plant 79 cottonwood trees along a street renamed in honor of town founder Levi Ruggles. She also led efforts to restore a vandalized monument to cowboy movie star Tom Mix on the Pinal Pioneer Parkway. Gov. Rose Mofford presented her with the 1988 Governor's Award for Historic Preservation. In 1995, Earley received a Jefferson Award for community service. ''A lot of people didn't even know that she was blind'' since losing virtually all her vision in the early 1970s, her daughter-in-law recalled. ''She used other people's eyes to assist her.'' Survivors include sons Wayne Earley of Phoenix and Roland Leeman of Florence; a daughter, Angie Earley of Tucson; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Florence Cemetery, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Florence. The family suggests memorial donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, 225 E. Butte Ave., Florence, AZ 85232; or to the Florence Historical Society, 715 S. Main St., Florence, AZ 85232. In 1994, Arizona Daily Star reporter Doug Kreutz filed an "earley.htm" in-depth feature about Earley's efforts to preserve the statute of Tony the Wonder Horse, Tom Mix's steed. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath158 Surnames: Roush, Traina, Sherrod, Stoltzfus, Harrison Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5326/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Esther Sherrod-Roush, former NMSU Nursing Department Head died in San Antonio, TX of natural causes on March 24, 2011. Mrs. Sherrod-Roush was born Esther Traina in 1920 in Schenectady, New York to Rev. and Mrs. Traina moved their family to New Jersey where Esther grew up and attended Montclair State Teachers College eventually teaching high school. After her first husband, Harold Roy died in World War II Esther moved to NYC and worked for the NY Railroad system selling tickets in Penn Station. In December 1944, she moved to Pontiac, Michigan to work for the Camp Fire Girls and soon became the Executive Director. She also worked for the Pontiac City Recreation Department and during that time set up a program for hospitalized kids. They called themselves the "play ladies" and it was here that Mrs. Sherrod-Roush's interest in nursing was first sparked. Before long she was an Administrative Assistant at Pontiac General Hospital. She was married to Ralph Sherrod in 1947 and in 1952 she enrolled in Yale University School of Nursing finishing her BSN at Wayne State University in 1955. By 1956, she was the Obstetrical instructor at St. Joseph's Hospital's Mc Cauley School of Practical Nursing and 1957 became director until 1963 when she returned to Wayne State University to complete her Master's Degree in Nursing. Sherrod-Roush was the founder of the LPN program for the Board of Education in Pontiac, Michigan and ran it for six years before moving to Ferris State College ! in Big Rapids, MI. where she started the Nursing "Step" Program whereby students first earned their LPN and then their ADN. Such "career ladder" programs made advancing in nursing possible for many students who would not have advanced otherwise and these programs were instrumental in providing a strong, professional nursing workforce for the rapidly evolving medical world. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Sherrod moved to Las Cruces and joined NMSU's College of Human & Community Services (now College of Health & Social Services) where Esther once again created a career ladder for nurses: LPN to ADN and adding the BSN rung in 1984. During her tenure at NMSU Sherrod was also one of the founders of the Mesilla Valley Hospice. Mr. and Mrs. Sherrod retired in 1985 and a year latter they sold their home and hit the road for five years of fun and adventurous RV-ing throughout the United States. The gasoline shortage in 1991 forced them to buy a "home base" in Las Cruces where Ralph Sherrod died two years later. In 1995, Esther Sherrod married Donald C. Roush, former Vice President of NMSU and they resided in Las Cruces until his death October 21, 2001. Esther Sherrod Roush moved to San Antonio, TX in 2003 to live with her niece Carol Stoltzfus, a graduate of the NMSU nursing program. Sherrod-Roush is survived by her niece Carol Stoltzfus, nephew John Harrison, grand nieces Andrea Stoltzfus, Rachel Harrison and Maureen Harrison and grand nephew Robert Stoltzfus. At her request no Memorial Service will be held. Donations may be made to the Mesilla Valley Hospice in her name. Author: marcenath158 Surnames: Wallace, Crawford, Janavaris Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5310/mb.ashx Message Board Post: W.J. 'Dub' Wallace, 86, died Monday, March 28, at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, NM. He was named W.J. in tribute to the two women who helped deliver him on the family farm in Crawford, Texas. W and J were their initials. Mr. Wallace was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II, where he served on the hospital ship USS Bountiful and crossed the equator 32 times. He piloted a small boat that transported the wounded from shore to ship. In 2009, he was recognized with a certificate and medal of appreciation by the Mayor and Las Cruces City Council for his service to the United States. In September of 1946, while a student at McMurry College in Abilene, Texas, he met Elizabeth Crawford. They married on Valentine's Day, 1947, and remained happily married until his death. They moved to New Mexico in 1948, where he enrolled at New Mexico A&M (now NMSU) and earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural science. They moved to Deming in 1953, where he first worked f! or Western Cotton Oil and then for Western Farm Bureau. In December of 1962, they moved back to Las Cruces, where he managed the Crop Hail Department of Western Farm Bureau, from which he retired in 1987. He was a respected crop-damage adjuster, and he traveled extensively throughout New Mexico, Arizona and Texas to assist his clients in the aftermath of hail storms. He served on the steering committee of the First Methodist Church while in Deming, where he also taught Sunday School, and spent many years as an active member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Las Cruces. He served locally both as a scout leader and a hospital volunteer, and was generous with his colorful auctioneering talents, which he - and we - loved. He and Elizabeth had three sons. David Bruce Wallace was born in 1952; Jonathan Carter Wallace was born in 1959; and James Crawford Wallace was born in 1961. He also had a beloved "second son", Jess Williams, who was a graceful companion and selfless caregiver in Dub's later years. In addition to his widow and children, he is mourned by a brother, Frank and his wife Lois; a sister, Lucille and her husband Cecil; his daughters-in-law, Alice (Jonathan), Cherie (James) and Jurian (David); his sisters-in-law, Judy Bartay and Anita Wallace; his brothers-in law, Rev. Jim Crawford (and wife Sue) and Nace Crawford, Jr. (and wife Joy); and a grandson, Geoffrey Janavaris; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends. His brothers Joseph, James, and sister Alberta passed before him. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Las Cruces. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery west of Las Cruces. Arrangements by Getz Funeral Home corner of Solano and Bowman Ave., Las Cruces, NM 526-2419.
