He was fifty-three. Stuart was born at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, on June 21, 1955. He was the son of E. A. Brown and Mary Impey Brown, and is survived by his father, E, A, "Dub" Brown, his stepmother, Janet Brown, his brother, Bruce, his two sisters, Sharon and Linda, his stepbrother, Alex Brown, his stepsister, Leila Eminson, his wife, Leslie Coutant, and by many other relatives and friends. Stuart received his undergraduate degree in English Literature at Columbia, Missouri. He went on to receive a Master's degree in Poetry from the Creative Writing program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. He then completed a PhD. in Rhetoric at the University of Arizona in Tucson. After completing the degree, Stuart came to New Mexico State University as a faculty member in the Department of English, where he served in various capacities-- as a professor, scholar, and administrator. He was a seminal figure in his chosen field, a valued teacher and mentor to his students, and a respected colleague to many of his fellow professionals. Stuart was also a volunteer fire fighter and EMT, serving with both the Timberon Volunteer Fire Department in Timberon, New Mexico and the Fairacres Volunteer Fire Department in Las Cruces, New Mexico. His passion for his work as an EMT led him to become an instructor in basic EMT skills, as well as an officer in the Fairacres VFD. He worked with several colleagues from Fairacres to secure a number of grants for fire fighting and EMT equipment. Besides his passion for education and emergency medicine, Stuart was a lover of the beauty of the natural world, especially of New Mexico's rich landscape. And he was also particularly fond of animals, especially the dogs and horses he and his wife kept. Anyone interested in sending flowers should consider making a donation to the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley as an alternative. Or donations could be made to any of the local volunteer fire departments. A ceremony honoring Stuart Brown will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 12th, 2010 AT La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home 555 W. He passed away on Tuesday March 30, 2010 in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. He was born September 18, 1942 in San Diego, Texas, a son of the late Servando and Aurora (Esparza) Cárdenas. On June 1, 1968 in San Diego, Texas he married Ninfa H. Gómez who he had known since high school. She died June 1, 2004. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Elsa Sánchez and Edna Cárdenas; a son, Luis Cárdenas; son-in-law, Chris Sánchez; granddaughter, Laurel Sánchez; 3 brothers, Eduardo Cárdenas, Luis Cárdenas, Alfredo Cárdenas and 3 sisters, Blanca Sifuentes, Maria Ortiz and Eva Chapa. He is preceded in heaven by his brothers Servando and Arnoldo and sister, Gloria. After graduating from San Diego High School in 1961 he served in the Air Force for 4 years before entering college. He earned a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Mathematics from Texas A&I University and a PhD in Statistics from Texas A&M University. In 1974 he made a home for his family in Las Cruces and became a Professor of Experimental Statistics at New Mexico State University retiring in 1996 following 22 years service. He dedicated his professional life to teaching and consulting and positively influenced many people's lives. Manuel dedicated himself to his family and lived a life full of optimism and love. He enjoyed playing guitar, singing, reading, golfing and spending time with family and friends. His family misses him terribly and life will never be the same without him. He was born to Nagesh Vasudev Gunaji and Saraswati (nee Manage) Nagesh Gunaji on January 9, 1931 in Belgaum , India. Naren grew up in India a curious, intelligent, driven young child. He received, with honors, a bachelor of civil engineering degree from the Government College of Engineering, University of Pune , India . In 1954 Naren came to the United States to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his MS in civil engineering followed by a PhD in hydrology and water resources. Upon graduation he joined Ohio Northern University as an assistant professor. In 1960 he moved to Las Cruces to join the faculty of New Mexico State University , where he directed the Engineering Experiment Station and the Building Materials Research & Testing Institute. He retired in 1986 after 26 years of service. Naren was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as the US Commissioner of the International Boundary and Water Commission, US-Mexico. Upon leaving the Commission in 1994, Naren began a new career as a consulting engineer. Naren was a member of several scholastic and professional societies, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Resources Association, and the Water Pollution Control Federation. In 1967, he received the Outstanding Service Award from the NM Society of Professional Engineers, which named him Engineer of the year in 1985. In 1990 he was a Distinguished Service Award Recipient from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Engineering Department. He published extensively on water resources management, waste treatment and hydraulics. He was honored to be on the Las Cruces City Council. Naren was also an active member of his beloved Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church. Naren was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Dattaram Manage, Ramkrishna Gunaji, and Narayan Gunaji; his sister Indumati Tendulkar; his wife Georgianna B. Gunaji; and his mother-in-law June Ellis Glardon. Left to cherish his memory are a bazillion people including his loving and devoted wife, Grace Klement-Gunaji, his sister Anduratha Kittur & brother Vasudev Gunaji of India, his children Rajini Ihler & Jerry, Monica Garcia & John, Gregory Gunaji & Desiree, Kimberley Watkins & Leonard, and Shannon Gunaji & Kelly; stepchildren Paul Jagoe & Robin, Bryan Jagoe & Donna, Kevin Jagoe, Tamara Ellis & Kirk, and Corie Gunn & Jay; as well as numerous loved nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends & colleagues. She also enjoyed driving around looking at the new homes being built and commenting on how the valley had grown since her childhood. She was a member of the Las Cruces First Assembly of God. FIELDER SR, 68, of Colorado Springs, Colorado and formerly of Las Cruces on Friday, April 2, 2010 at the VA Medical Center. He was born February 27, 1942in Las Cruces to Avron and Nevia Pettes Fielder. Bennie was a graduate of Las Cruces High School where he was an amazing athlete having been part of two championships in football and basketball in 1959 and another in 1961 in basketball. Mr. Fielder served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and retired from MacDonnell Douglas as an engineer and the Los Angeles Urban League as a director. Those left to mourn his passing include four sons, Bennie Fielder, Jr. and wife Karla, Dennis Fielder and wife Adela, Charles Perez and wife Sandra all of Albuquerque, Darrell Fielder and wife Lilly of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters, Shirley Perez and Patsy, Ann Herrera and husband Florencio all of Albuquerque; five brothers, John A. Fielder of Riverside, California, Harvey, Melvin, and Charles Fielder all of Las Cruces, Odell Fielder of Albuquerque; a sister, Dorthel Fielder Smith of El Paso, Texas. Dolores was born June 22, 1928 in Spokane, Washington to Edwin and Grace Bailey Hopkinson. She was a beloved member of the Folsom/Des Moines community for most of her life, enjoying ranching, gardening, horseback riding, bridge, and homemaking. She was fiercely loyal, dedicated, and passionate about her family, putting them first, even above herself. Dolores was a beautiful countrywoman through and through, a tough old gal who did not shy away from hard work and persevered through all hardships. She loved the Lord and relied on Him daily to give her strength. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ben Wooten of the family home; two sons, Daryl Wooten and wife, Lisa of Las Cruces and Glen Wooten and wife, Rita of Del Norte, Colorado; one daughter, Doris Jean Rhodes and husband, Wayne of Valparaiso, Indiana; one sister, Patricia Allen of Edgewood, New Mexico. Other survivors include her eleven grandchildren, Danielle, Collette, Gabriel, Shannon, Chad, Krystal, Matthew, Joseph, Aprile, Andy and Matthew, as well as thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Concluding services and interment will follow at Shakespeare Cemetery. Eloisa was born in Lordsburg on August 6, 1930 to Manuel and Mercedes (Carreon) Valdiviezo. Eloisa was a homemaker and also a waitress having worked at the El Charro Restaurant for approximately 30 years. She retired in 1985 which gave her more time to be around her family and especially her grandchildren who were the light of her life. Eloisa was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jean Diaz and her husband Sal of Lordsburg, Felipe "Porkey" Martinez Jr. and his wife Frances of Las Cruces; brothers, Felix Valdiviezo and his wife Manuela, Antonio Valdiviezo and his wife Elvira all of Lordsburg; sisters, Inez Bejarano and her husband Bart of Las Cruces and Manuela Martinez of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Paul Martinez, Stephanie Apodaca, Lori Montoya, Angela Lopez, Scott Saucedo, D.J. Saucedo, Albert Diaz and Jennifer Allen; great grandchildren are Aitiana Diaz, Raymond Saucedo, Ashley Saucedo, Vivian Allen, Felipe Allen, Kayla Martinez, David Montoya and Michael Montoya. She was preceded in death by her husband Felipe Martinez, her parents Manuel and Mercedes Valdiviezo, and 2 nephews, Raymond Valdiviezo and Pete Martinez. VARGAS, 84, of Del Cerro, entered eternal life Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Casa de Oro Care Center. He was born October 13, 1925 in Villa Coronado, Chihuahua, Mexico to Juan Jose and Merced Bañuelos Vargas. The passing of his father when he was three years old made his early years difficult. After a few years working in the mineral mine in San Francisco del Oro and service in the Mexican army, Aurelio moved his young family to the Hatch area. Aurelio spent many years as a farm foreman in the Hatch area. He later moved to Las Cruces where he worked and eventually retired from Stahmann farms. He loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. At home, he enjoyed spending time with his flowers and pets. He loved to read and enjoyed boxing. Aurelio was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Survivors include his loving wife, Elodia C. Vargas, of the family home; two sons, Eduardo Vargas (Luz Evelia) of Tucson, Arizona and Javier Vargas (Henrietta) of Las Cruces; three daughters, Ramona Grajeda (Gonzalo) of Las Cruces, Magdalena Hinckley (Alan) of Logan, Utah and Aurelia Vargas (Randy Maxey) of Las Cruces. Other survivors include ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Valentin, Felix, Florencio, and Lino. A brother, Juan and two sisters, both named Soledad died in infancy, as well as two grandchildren, David Hinckley and Elia Vargas. Visitation for Aurelio Vargas will begin at 6 PM, Monday, April 5, 2010 in BacaŽs Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road, where the Prayer Vigil is scheduled to begin at 7 PM. His funeral mass will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, April 6, 2010 in San Pedro Catholic Church, in Del Cerro with the Reverend Martin Cordero, officiating. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the San Miguel Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. Vicki was born on December 25, 1953 to Henry and Frances Madrid. She graduated from Mayfield High School in 1971 and attended New Mexico State University . She worked as a Paralegal for several years at Southern New Mexico Legal Services and after many years of working there she retired and branched out and became an Advocate for Social Security where she had her own business "Advocates at Large." Vicki loved spending time with her family and with her companion Robert. She especially loved to spend time with her nieces and nephew. She had very special relationships with them. Vicki had many friends from all different times in her life. She enjoyed going to the casinos and bingo and enjoyed camping. She loved to dance and loved hearing music. Her greatest love was for Christ and attending church. She had a very special relationship with Kayla, Christian, Samantha, Andrea, Nicole, and Ellie who were her nieces and nephew. She had very special relationships with her cousins: Em! ma, Dolores, and Diane and her very best friends Josie, Anna, Angie, JoAnn and Ismael, and Smiley to name a few. Vicki loved life and always embraced the special relationships and moments. She was bright and happy and even when she was very ill, she could brighten up someone else's day with her jokes and her wonderful sense of humor. She had so many special gifts and those who had the opportunity to know her loved her. She is so very loved by her family and we will miss her deeply. She is survived by her Mother, Frances Madrid and companion Frank Montoya; her brother David Madrid (Portland, Oregon); and two sisters Barbara Telles and spouse Tom Telles ; Kathy Ledesma and spouse Ron Ledesma all of Las Cruces. She was the loving aunt of Tommy Telles Jr. (T.J) and wife Geneice Telles; Michelle (Lela) Hernandez and husband Richard Hernandez; and Kayla (K.K.) Ledesma whom she adored. Vicki was loved and adored by her four great nieces Elliana "Smelly Elli" Hernandez, Andrea "Dre", Samantha "Mantha Maria", and Nicole "Sticky Nicky" Telles and one great nephew/Godson Christian "C" Hernandez all of Las Cruces. She is also survived by her Angel Bob Ballesteros, many cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and her two dogs Hemi and April and two cats Bubba and Ebony. Vicki is preceded in death by her father Henry Madrid. The family will be celebrating Vicki's life on Monday, April 5, 2010 at 2 pm at Living Waters Assembly of God on the corner of E. She is also survived by her sister, Donna Morris (Jerry) of Las Cruces, NM and a sister, Barbara Allison (Jimmy), a brother Art Hedrick of Albuquerque, NM, 30 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, some of whom she helped raise or babysat. She also has one grandchild and two great grandchildren on the way. She loved having children around her all time.
