HERNANDEZ, 87, of Las Cruces entered eternal life Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Casa Del Sol Senior Care Center. He was born October 2, 1922 in Aguascalientes, Mexico to Tomas and Francisca Romo Hernandez. Mr. Hernandez retired as a farm laborer and was a member of Centro Cristiano Palabra de Fe. Survivors include his loving wife, Francisca Calixtro Hernandez of the family home; four sons, Jesus Hernandez of Tucson, Arizona, Tomas Hernandez, Jorge Hernandez and wife Norma all of Las Cruces, Angel Hernandez and wife Rosa of Sacramento, California; two daughters, Lydia Contreras and husband Humberto, Josefina Sanchez and husband Freddie all of Las Cruces; a daughter-in-law, Graciela L. Hernandez also of Las Cruces. Other survivors include thirty-three grandchildren; sixty great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Antonio Hernandez; three sisters, Francisca Lopez, Guadalupe Campos and Carmen Rodriguez. Visitation for Mr. Hernandez will begin at 6 PM Thursday, April 22, 2010 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road where the Evening Service is scheduled for 7 PM. Plants, 86, of Las Cruces, died Sunday, April 18, 2010. He was born May 27, 1923 in Claysville, PA. to Harold and Nelle Calvert Plants. Harold was a veteran of the US Army Air Corp where he served his country honorably during WW II. He retired after many years of faithful service as Equipment Manager for the State of New Mexico. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved to hunt and fish, was a member of the Eagles Club and had a great joy of working crossword puzzles. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Mr. Plants is survived by his daughter Donna Dunn of El Paso, TX; brother Howard Plants of Claysville, PA; sister Ila Mae Shaler of West Alexander, PA; grandson Jeffrey A. Dunn and wife Pamela of Bedford, New Hampshire and by his two great-grandchildren Nicholas I. Dunn and Brittney N. Dunn. Howard is also survived by his numerous extended family all residing on the east coast. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Jean Plants; granddaughter Judith A. There is a possibility some of the Family on my mother side ( the Holguins ) could have gone on to New Mexico. These are the facts as I know them. I've found border crossing documents showing Nicolas Holguin Sr. born in 1846 in Parral Chihuahua, Roasrio Holguin born in 1886 in Jimenez, Chihuahua, Nicolas Holguin Jr. born in 1896 in Jimenez, Chihuahua. In this same border crossing it also shows the children of Donaciano Barajas and Rosario Holguin. There names, Norberta Barajas born in 1912 in Jimenez, Chihuahua, Soledad Barajas born in 1914 in Jimenez, Chihuahua. There is also a Jose Porras born in 1907 in Jimenez, Chihuahua. He is listed as nephew to my grandfather Donaciano Barajas. Why my uncle Julian Barajas born in 1903 in Jimenez, Chihuahua, And My Mother Elvira Barajas born in 1913 in Santa Rosalia, Chihuahua. Are not list! ed, has always been a mystery to me. I regret very much not asking more questions while my mother was still living. In addition I have been able to get information that may be fact. My grandfather remarried and moved to Ca. taking my uncle Julian with him. I am told that Mrs Holguin ( my Grandmother) went back to Mexico and took my mother with her. Shortly there after she died and my mother was put in an orphanage. Years later my uncle Julian went back for her,and she joined my grandfather in Camarillo, Ca. My grandfather died in Oxnard, Ca. She later moved to Chicago, became a computer programmer, working for Playboy Magazine for several years. She moved to San Francisco, CA, continuing to work in programming until retiring. She moved to Las Cruces in November, 2007. She was a member of Red Hats and enjoyed attending their luncheons. Never married, she is survived by her sister Darlene Forni, her brother-in-law John Forni, nephews Mark Forni, Michael, James, and Daryl Pond, nieces Denise Lemire, Deborah Buescher, Linda Merrill, and Marianne Christensen, several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Phillip A. Pond and a sister, Charlotte A. Pond. As she wished, she was cremated, burial will be in North Cemetery in St. Charles, Illinois next to her beloved husband. She was born August 4, 1921 in Spring Lake, Illinois, the daughter of Theresa and Frank Long. She was married to Dickinson Alan McNeil in 1941. They moved to St.Charles, Illinois in 1946, he died in 1990 and she moved to Good Samaritan in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 2001. Surviving are two sons, Keith Alan (Maria Luisa González) of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Dickinson Alan III (Carol Jude) of Pikeville, Kentucky. She is survived by four grandchildren: Susan Lee Ann Larson of Las Cruces, Jennifer Elizabeth Lemmons (Steve Lemmons) of Durham, NC, Rachel Maria McNeil and James Thorn McNeil. In addition there are five great grandchildren, John Larson and Teresa Larson of Las Cruces and Timothy Lemmons, Zachery Lemmons and Jackson Lemmons of Durham, NC. One great-great granddaughter, Adrianna Marie Hernandez of Las Cruces was the apple of her eyes. Her mother and father, as well as two sisters (Katherine Thomas and Pauline Woodley and her one brother (Carl Long) preceded her in death. She is survived by two sisters (Helen Weishaupt and Rosallie Foster) and three brothers (Frank Long, Jr., George Long and Melvin Long) all of Mackinaw, IL. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She worked as a paraprofessional at St. Charles High School, where many will remember her affectionately as "Mom" in the cafeteria. She also spent many Sundays in th! e First Baptist Sunday school nursery. A memorial service will be held at the Good Samaritan Village in Las Cruces on Friday, April 24, 2010 at 4 P.M. She was born January 31, 1910, in Irvine, Scotland to Duncan and Lillie Sinclair. She married Bertram Mutch in 1946. Along with their two small children, they immigrated to Fairacres, New Mexico in 1951. They soon opened Scotty's Dixie and Grocery, which they owned and operated until 1974. Lily was a friend to everyone, helping countless families with groceries when they had none, and many a tank of gas for a wayward traveler, broke and trying to get home. Lily spent her life committed to serving God. She was an active member of her church, the senior center, and Women's Aglow Fellowship. Soon after the death of her husband in 1978, she moved to Garland, TX to live with her daughter, where she remained until her death. Lily is survived by her daughter, Patricia Mills and husband, Ron of Texas; her son, Sinclair Mutch and wife, Jean of Colorado, seven grandchildren: Monica Wilbanks, Charles Mills, Tricia Mills, Scott Mutch, Trevor Mutch, Brandon Mutch and Nicole Mutch, eight great-grandchildren: Joseph, Jennifer, Joshua, Tyler, Zachary, Logan, Brandon Jr. and Ryder. Although her passing will be a heartfelt loss to many, we must remember to pass on the immeasurable faith that was Lily's. She would request above all, that we celebrate her life through God's love! Wallis Sr., 82, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, April 14, at Good Samaritan Village. He was born in Valley Springs, Arkansas on November 16, 1927 to Omer and Ruby Wallis. James is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jerry; three sons: James Wallis Jr. and wife Sue, Scott Wallis and wife Cherri, and Dave Wallis and wife Cheryl; five grandchildren: Shannon Edwards, Jeremy Wallis, Jared Wallis, Taylor Wallis and Austin Wallis; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Omer and Ruby Wallis and two sisters, Juanita Smith and Doris Jackson. James graduated from Harrison High School in 1945. Later that year he joined the Navy at the age of 17. He served in WWII and participated in the testing of the Atomic Bomb in Project Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. During his years of service, he was exposed to radiation, and was one of the last surviving atomic veterans. After his time in the Navy, James attended Paris Junior College and Watchmaking School in Paris, Texas. He met his wife Jerry there and they were married in 1950. James was a watchmaker and jeweler for 50 years and owned a jewerly store in Van Horn, Texas for 25 years, he was also a county commisioner and Chairman of the Methodist Church. He and Jerry moved to Las Cruces in 1987 and owned a jewerly store for 2 years. They then purchased Medical Center Pharmacy and later retired in 1997. James was a sweet man, soft spoken and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His smile and laughter were contagious. He was dearly loved and will be dearly missed. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6:00-7:00pm at La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home 555 W. Amador Avenue, where the funeral service will follow on Monday morning at 11:00am also at the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Born June 2, 1924 in Hutchinson, Kansas, Barbara Louise was the only child of Dr. Clifford Seelig Kile and Pearl "Pauline" Edie Kile. A member of Delta Gamma sorority, she graduated from the University of Kansas, with a BA in mathematics and a master's degree in Educational Psychology. She married Albert Zernickow in 1950. They moved to China Lake, California, where he was a computer specialist at the Naval Weapons Center and she was a high school counselor, psychometrist and math teacher. They enjoyed playing golf and building a cabin together in the nearby mountains. They retired to Carson City, Nevada where Albert died in 1980. They had no children. In 1991, Barbara was reunited with Dr. Joe Ben Wheat whom she had known when he was stationed in Kansas while serving in the Army during WWII. They were married March 22, 1992 and lived in Boulder, Colorado, where he was a curator emeritus of anthropology at the University of Colorado Museum. Barbara and Joe Ben traveled extensively throughout the Southwest as he continued his professional activities and research on southwestern textiles. Having been a fiber artist, educator and oral history volunteer, Barbara recognized the importance of his work. She was a moving force in the posthumous publication of his book "Blanket Weaving in the Southwest" (University of Arizona Press, 2004). She also supported and contributed to the continuing development of the Joe Ben Wheat Collection at the University of Colorado, Boulder. After his death in May, 1997, Barbara moved to Las Cruces in 2000. Barbara was a fiber artist who created many beautiful clothes and items for her home. She had a wide-range of interests and avidly read anything with an historical bent. She fostered many strong friendships, and had a special knack for bringing people of common interest together. A philanthropist and promoter of education, she unobtrusively provided the means for many to continue and enhance their chosen endeavors. Her personal motto was "Learn to listen and not just hear." She is survived by three nieces, Cathy Wheat Kamat (Satish) of Las Cruces; Jean Wheat Gregory (Don) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Judy Vick Miller (Ray) of Orlando, Florida. She also leaves behind her loving caretaker and friend of many years, Lilly Saiz and son, Jimmy. At her request, cremation has taken place and a private memorial will be held later. He was born Dec. 8, 1929 in Alamogordo, NM to Ramon Rodarte Roman and Natalia Lira Rayos. Ramon was a long time parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was a bricklayer and with the help of his brothers built the family home in Alamogordo. He taught his sons his trade but always encouraged education and strong work ethics. He was an avid deer hunter, and shared this passion with his children. His sons, daughter, and grandson accompanied him in hunting, creating a special bond. At times, his daughters participated in target shooting. There will always be a special place off of West Side road that holds fond memories. He labored hard for those he loved then left us to remember. Ramon was preceded in death by his loving wife Rebecca Roman, his son Ricardo Roman, his parents, his siblings Ignacio, Paulina, Pedro, Francisca, Julian, Juanita, Petra, Felisa and J! esus. Born on August 21, 1922, in Regina, New Mexico, Audie was the second of five children of George Benton Wasson and Jonnie Lera Hannah Wasson. She married Elmo Lloyd Robinson Sr. on February 1, 1962. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a full-time mission with her husband for the Church in Monterey, Chihuahua, Mexico. Audie lived in various places throughout her life including New Mexico, California, Alaska, Texas, Idaho, Arizona, Puerto Rico, New Jersey, Viet Nam, South Carolina, and Mexico, and was a traveler in Canada, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Thailand, the Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands and numerous places throughout the United States. Audie enjoyed ballroom dancing, square dancing, quilting, crocheting and needlework, sewing, gardening and especially reading Louis L'Amour novels. Audie is survived by her children: Patricia Baker (Terry), Dennis Hart (Robin), Elmo Robinson Jr. (Patricia), Ethel Hawkes, Jonnie Holland (James), Nancy Ballard (Blaine), Jean Michel (Scott), Ted Robinson (Alexa), and Janis Hart. Audie had 54 grandchildren, over 100 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her Aunt Alex Sorrell and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Loved ones who predeceased her include her husband, Elmo Lloyd Robinson Sr., beloved and known to her as "her Robby," her sons Kenneth Benton Hart and Christen Lambert Robinson, her son-in-law Thomas Alvin Hawkes, her parents George Benton Wasson and Jonnie Lera Wasson, her brothers William "Billy" Wasson and Paul Wasson, her sisters Jean DeVillez and Daina Wasson. A viewing is to be held from 2:00 to 2:40 p.m. with the funeral following at 3:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located 3210 Venus Street in Las Cruces. Interment thereafter will be held at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Hatch, New Mexico. The eldest of four children, she was born to Carl and Mabel Laura Holman on June 21, 1918, in Wellington, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Carl "Bud", her sister, Mary, and her youngest child, Laura Elizabeth Butler-Evans. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Oscar Butler; her younger sister, Martha Ann Smith (Phil), of Fullerton, California; four children: Mary Lewise Hattersley (Cleve), Austin, Texas; John Carl Butler (Marie), Falls Church, Virginia; Gordon Lewis Butler (Martha) Las Cruces; and David Holman Butler (Terry), Las Cruces; nine grandchildren: Laurie, Harmony, Happy, Braeden, Max, Miranda, Hilee, Charles, and Miles; and eight great-grandchildren: Kris, Robert, George, Henry, Clinton, Craig, Nathanael and Gilead; and extended family. Virginia inspired the love and admiration of her family, and she had the same effect on most who knew her. She was a gentle, patient, and loving spouse, mother, grandmother, teacher, friend, and a supporter of peaceful and progressive causes. From 1958 to 1978 she taught students of various grade levels at Valley View Elementary School in Las Cruces. She continued to volunteer in the public schools as a tutor and at her church as a Sunday school teacher for a number of years after her retirement. Shortly before her passing, she helped establish a fund to sponsor youth from the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Las Cruces to attend an annual training conference at the United Nations in New York City. These three young women have just returned from that conference with glowing reports about their experiences. Virginia's dedication to her family and her community--both locally and world-wide-was unwavering. To celebrate her life and perpetuate her memory, Virginia's friends and family will hold a memorial service on Friday, May 14, 2010, at 7 P.M. at the Unitarian Church of Las Cruces, 2000 South Solano Drive. All friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent to the Virginia Butler Fund to sponsor youth involvement with the United Nations. She was born to Harvey Hyrum Taylor & Mary Alice Pierce Taylor, in Colonia Dublan, Chihuahua, Mexico, on August 10, 1919. She was in the middle of a family of 13 children, so she was a favorite sister of the older and younger siblings. Her mother died when Martha was 16, so she helped raise her younger siblings. Martha met Bill Adams when they were about 8 years old. They married each other on October 30, 1939 and recently celebrated 70 years of happy marriage. They lived in various parts of Mexico until 1950, when they moved to El Paso. Martha and Bill moved to 630 Monte Vista, Las Cruces in 1956, and they lived there until January 2010, when they moved to Golden Mesa. In her younger years, Martha enjoyed raising a family, cooking the tastiest food, and keeping the household running smoothly. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and taught Primary for 35 years, taught Sunday School, taught Relief Society classes, and was a Cub Scout Leader. She also taught school when she lived in Mexico, and those who she taught still talk about how grateful they are that she made them learn to love reading. Martha was a joy to be around and made many friends over the years. She was a very thoughtful, loving, and generous person. She will be missed. Martha is proceeded in death by her son Marty, grandson Allan, her parents Harvey & Mary, her step-mother Rhoda, her brothers Roy, Mennell, Lynn & Joe, and her sisters Beth, Maudie, Mary Alice, and Ethel. Survivors include her sister Rinda, brothers Daniel, Claudius and Aston, her children Floyde (& Connie), Sid (& Linda), Bob (& Marla), and Bonnie Elder (& Patrick); grandchildren Bill, Lynne, Nancy, Annette, Suzy, Linda, Brian, Marty, Stephanie, Amy and Justin; great-grandchildren Elise, Nolan, Justina, Logan, Joshua, Carol, Carol, Cathy, Jarod, Jason, Jude, Henry, Sora, Audrey, Camille, Mia and Harley. For the last three years of his life he was taken care of by his granddaughter Gloria Michelle Tellez and caregiver Vicky Alvarez. He died peacefully in his sleep on April 8th, 2010, at the age of 84, at his home in La Mesa, NM. He lived a full life and was able to accomplish all of his dreams and goals. He had a successful business and was able to travel to several places around the world with his eldest son Artemio Jr. and brother Abel Gonzalez. He was an entrepreneur. Artemio started his dairy, Gonzalez Dairy, north of Las Cruces at the old Taylor Dairy Farm location in August of 1966 with 35 dairy cows. There were no employees at this time; family members did all work. By the end of the second year, he purchased the 180-acre dairy site southeast of Mesquite, which was the first dairy in the area. By the end of the third year at the Taylor Dairy Farm Location, he was ready to move to the new Gonz! alez Dairy site in Mesquite, NM with 300 head of dairy cows, heifers, and calves. In 1977 Gonzalez Dairy bought its first farm in Dell City, Texas. Over the next twenty years additional farms were added to the operation. Artemio worked everyday of his life on his dairy and farms until three years ago when his was no longer able to. He was a strong great man who cared deeply for his family. He was always there to give his opinions and suggestions to whomever needed it. He was a good teacher to many, and always encouraged everyone especially his family to go the extra mile and to get an education. He led by example and he will be deeply missed by his family and many others whose lives he touched. He survived by his two sons Artemio Gonzalez Jr. of Dell City, TX; Joe L. Gonzalez of Mesquite, NM; his three daughters, Mary Gonzalez of La Mesa, NM; Iris Gonzalez of Las Cruces, NM; and Gloria (Gonzalez) Nevins of Mesquite, NM. He is survived by his brothers Abel (California): Arbey (Cd. Mier Tamaulipas); Arturo (Texas); Alvaro (Cd. Mier Tamaulipas); and his sisters Amparo (Texas); Alma Pura (Texas); Adalgisa (Texas); Analida (Mexico); Araceli (Mexico); and Betty (Mexico). He is survived by his 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years America G. Gonzalez, his granddaughter Rebecca Valverde, his great-granddaughter Lianna Rain Jones, his parents and several brothers and sisters. Chavez (lovingly called Mom and Nonnie) was called home to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. She passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at the Heritage Assisted Living. Emma was born on November 29, 1928 to Isaac C. Garcia and Victoria M. Garcia in Dona Ana, NM. She and her older sister, Angelina, helped raise their six younger siblings. Emma graduated at the top of her class at Las Cruces Union High in May 1947. She attended New Mexico Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and Montgomery County Community College. She worked for C. B. Smith Construction Company for 20 years. Emma and her family lived in Caracas, Venezuela and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the 1960's and then Rockville, Maryland in the 1970's. Along with her four sisters, Emma was co-owner and co-manager of Victoria's Lounge. Though she retired from working at Victoria's in 2008, she adamantly attended her Happy Hours every Friday and Sunday afternoon. Emma's greatest passion was for our Lord Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church for decades. She truly had special times with all her family and friends from all the different periods in her life and continued making new friends till her end. Nonnie loved a good party and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, and friends. She loved having three-hour lunches with her best friends, Becky Mesa, Concha Contreras, Corrie Montoya, and Esther Lucero at Fat Eddie's. Special thanks to Emma's special friend, and hairdresser, Dolores Villalobos (Pickle) for her kindness, prayers and laughter. Special thanks to her friends Alaina Johnson, Jay Robb, care-givers and staff at the Heritage Assisted Living and Hospice, who also became close members of our family. Emma loved life and served as the family's matriarch after her mother passed away in 1988. She LOVES to laugh heartily! Even when she became ill, she maintained a strong sense of humor. She especially loved good music and dancing. Emma had a blessed life and shared her precious gifts with all who knew her. Emma is survived by her children, Frieda M. Chavez (companion Joe D. Valdez), Isaac V. Chavez (wife Minerva A. Chavez), Christina Chavez Kelley (husband Michael G. Kelley), and Vivian M. Frietze (husband O. Leonard Frietze); her sisters, Angelina M. Lucero, Elodia M. Breeden, Barbie Breeden, Mark Diaz, Joaquin S. Chavez, Bianca M. Chavez, Michaela Kelley, (My) Jessie Nowell, and Dominik V.
