    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Hatch Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4264/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Bataan Death March veteran, POW dies at age 97 The Daily Times 04/27/2010 FARMINGTON - The 1,032 days Claude Hatch spent as a prisoner of war in Bataan, Philippines, influenced the rest of his life, his family said. Hatch, a World War II veteran and lifelong resident of Fruitland, died Friday at age 97. He was 30 when he was captured in 1942, forced to walk 60 miles in the Bataan Death March and held prisoner in various camps, according to data from American Ex-Prisoners of War, an organization chartered by Congress to represent former prisoners of war and their families. "Whenever I had trials in my life, I thought of him and what he went through," said Hatch's daughter, Rachel Hatch. "If he could go through what he did and survive, then I can get through my trials. He's made me a stronger person." Hatch did not share many of his war stories with his family, Rachel said. He was inducted into the Army in 1941 and became a member of the 200th Coast Artillery Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion. After surviving the death march and nearly three years in captivity, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. During the death march, Hatch and as many as 70,000 others were subjected to inhumane treatment, including stabbings, beatings and refusal to let prisoners eat or drink. Between 5,000 and 10,000 never made it to Camp O'Donnell. "The brutal stuff, he had a hard time dealing with," Rachel said of her father. "He dealt with it the best he could." Hatch told his three children the stories were "not for women and children to hear," Rachel said. "As we grew up, he talked some more," she said. "My mother told us if he wanted to speak about it, we were to sit there and let him talk, but we weren't to ask him any questions." Hatch talked to his younger brother and best friend, Steward Hatch, Rachel said. Steward was a confidante, and the two men talked every night. Hatch in 1981 went back to the Philippines for the 40th anniversary of the incident. "When he came home, I could just tell he had made peace with it," Rachel said. "He was a changed person. There were still stories he would not tell, and we wouldn't ask, but there were other stories he would talk to us about." Not all of the stories were negative, Rachel said. She recalled her father telling of a monkey that crept from the jungle every night to sleep with the prisoners. "He told me he was in six or seven prison camps," Rachel said. "This one was in a jungle, in the hills, and there was a little monkey that would come out of the trees and find him and he would crawl in his shirt by his neck and go to sleep. In the morning, my dad would give him whatever little bit of food he had, and the monkey would go back in the trees for the day." Hatch also worked on pottery while in captivity and taught Navajo words to some of the Japanese guards, Rachel said. After returning home, Hatch worked as a trader for various trading posts. He also was a historian and helped establish the Southern San Juan Paiute tribe. Hatch was a member of the Upper Fruitland Chapter's veteran organization and his death leaves a hole in the community, said LoRenzo Bates, the chapter's delegate to the Tribal Council. Bates said he met Hatch at age 8 or 9 when the older man had a trading post along the river. "He was part of the chapter, a member of the community," Bates said of Hatch. "He was well-known, well-liked, a true American hero." Those who knew him best remember his perspective on life, said his daughter, Nora. "I want to remember him as always being there for me and my children," she said. "Every time I was sad or something, he would always cheer me up, like it wasn't the end of the world." Funeral services for Hatch are at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the LDS chapel on U.S. 64 in Kirtland. Viewing starts at noon. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was born in 1926 in Schenectady, NY to Ellen Glen Bayliss and Harry Bayliss, who immigrated from Scotland after World War I. Erna met Theodore Theisen, who lived down the block, when they were both 12 years old. They married in 1946, then worked and raised their family in the Albany / Schenectady Capital District. In 1992, the couple retired to Las Cruces. In the early years of her retirement, Erna enjoyed traveling the Southwest with her sister, Martha Bayliss Winn, who had also retired to Las Cruces. Mrs. Winn died in 2002. Even though she was an accomplished business-woman-starting as a night-shift bookkeeper at General Electric, then becoming the Chief Financial Officer of an insurance-industry trade association-Erna's proudest accomplishment was the impact she had on the character of her children and grandchildren, which was profound. Erna is survived by her husband of almost 64 years, Theodore Theisen, and their children: Theodore Theisen III of Southbury CT, Harry L and Lynn Apkarian Theisen of Washington DC, Katie Theisen of Las Cruces NM, Conni Theisen Brown and Steve Brown of Nashville TN. Author: marcenath Surnames: Lwowski Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4262/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces Sun News 26 April 2010 Dr. Walter Lwowski, emeritus research professor of chemistry at New Mexico State University passed away on April 19. Professor Lwowski was born on December 28, 1928 in the Bavarian Alps city of Garmish, Germany. He received his higher education at Heidelberg University receiving his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1955. Thereafter, he immigrated to the United States. Dr. Lwowski did postdoctoral work first with Donald Cram at UCLA from 1955 to 1957 and then with Robert Woodward at Harvard from 1957 to 1960. He worked with Professor Woodward on the total synthesis of chlorophyll for which Professor Woodward won the Noble Prize in Chemistry. He joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at Yale University in 1960. In the 1964 New Mexico State University started its Ph. D. program in chemistry, and the University was fortunate to hire Professor Lwowski away from Yale in 1966 to help develop the NMSU graduate program in organic chemistry. As a Research Professor in Chem! istry he not only played a major role in the building the graduate program in chemistry, he also developed an international representation in nitrene chemistry and nitrogen heterocyclic chemistry. Professor Lwowski taught numerous masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students. His research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, among others, and he was the author of many seminal research publications in nitrene and heterocyclic chemistry. Prof. Lwowski was a unique individual who learned English by reading instrument repair manuals as a graduate student. In so doing he developed his lifelong interest in electronics and scientific instrumentation. He was a world class expert in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and his diligence in keeping these machines up and running contributed heavily to the research productivity in the Department of Chemistry. His expertise in NMR instrumentation also played a role in the development of the chemistry graduate program at the University of Texas at El Paso. According to Professor Herndon of UTEP, when UTEP's first NMR instrument was being unloaded at the Physical Science Building, the workers dropped the instrument. Professor Lwowski came to the rescue and had the instrument running in just a few hours. He was of the old school. However, and rarely appeared in public without his customary suit and tie. It was very common to see Prof. Lwowski emerge from the dusty recesses of an instrument console or from under his car when he changed the oil in a suit and tie. Prof. Lwowski loved hiking and hiked the Organs Mountains from one end to the other- but always in a suit (no tie , however). Walter loved classical music and compiled an extensive collection of recorded music. He was also a patron of the El Paso and Las Cruces Symphonies. Professor Lwowski retired in 1991 but retained an office and laboratory in the Department after his retirement. During his retirement he helped maintain the Department's research instrumentation, and he built chemistry demonstration equipment for undergraduate instruction. Professor Lwowski also did a great deal of traveling during his retirement frequently visiting friends in Germany, Austria and Thailand but always looked forward to returning to Las Cruces, which he truly considered his home. Professor Lwowski is survived by a brother, Hans Lwowski of Redding, CA and three nieces: Ulrike McConnell of Colorado Springs, CO, Annette Beazell of Anderson, CA and Christine Rose of San Jose, CA. At his request, cremation will take place and no services are planned. Arrangements by Getz Funeral home corner of Solano and Bowman Ave., Las Cruces, NM 526-2419. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: DeLisle, Harries Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4257/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Getz Funeral Home 24 April 2010 Helga (Harries) DeLisle and Gilles DeLisle Helga (Harries) DeLisle, 72, and Gilles DeLisle, 69, died in their home on Mesilla Hills Drive on Wednesday, April 14th 2010, along with their life-long friend Peter Weith, 68. Helga was born in Northern Germany on November 21st 1937 in the town of Elmshorn as the third of four children. She lost her father, Klaus Harries, when she was four and her mother Maria had to take care of the family. Growing up in difficult times during and after the war, Helga spent many happy days at her grandfather's farm and developed a deep love for nature and the outdoors. Her interest in travelling and foreign countries resulted in the decision to study linguistics in the United States. Gilles was born on March 30th 1941 in Rural Saskatchewan, Canada, fourth of five siblings. Raised on the farm, his practical skills, creativity an entrepreneurial spirit shone through, having been raised by his incredibly resourceful parents, Eugene Jr. and Germaine. His adventurous nature could not, however, be held back; he set off as a young man for greener and warmer pastures. Helga and Gilles met at the university in La Jolla in California, inseparable thereafter. They were two creative and open-minded people who complemented each other in many ways. The German girl and the proud French-Canadian had found their soulmates. After moving to Minneapolis where they obtained their PhDs in linguistics, their first teaching positions were with a small college in rural Quebec. They eventually settled down in Las Cruces, where Helga taught in the language department of NMSU until her retirement in 1996 as department head. Gilles pursued a multitude of interests and business ventures - from real estate development to engine design - always thinking outside the box, combined with a keen sense of opportunity. Both loved to explore and their travel took them to all five continents. Helga was a gifted painter and filled many walls with her artwork. Gilles expressed his creative spirit with several inventions, photography, and writing. Most of all, they enjoyed having good times and stimulating discussions with friends. Helga and Gilles considered every day a gift and always seizing the moment. Gilles' heart transplant in 1996 intensified their passion for life. Their openess and inspiring nature won them friends wherever they went. They will be missed deeply by their families in Germany and Canada, as well as a much larger family of friends in Las Cruces and all over the world. There will be a "Celebration of Life" to remember Helga and Gilles on Sunday, May 2nd, 12.30pm at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road, Las Cruces, NM.
