Author: marcenath Surnames: Black, Henkel, Dean, Houghton Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4332/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces Sun News 21 May 2010 Glady Mary Dean Houghton Black Our feisty little Mom and Grandma left this world, Monday, May 17, 2010 at the age of 98. Gladys was born in Coos Bay, Oregon on April 06, 1912 To William and Marie Henkel Dean and was the eldest of five sisters. She married Harold "Red" Houghton (the love of her life) in 1933. Gladys lived the life of a logger's wife, moving from camp to camp, living in tents, but always had her peddle operated sewing machine with her to make all the family's clothing. On D- Day, June 06, 1944, Gladys and "Red" welcomed their son, Charles Dean Houghton "Charlie" into the family. In 1949, they adopted 7 year old Barbara to make their family complete. The Houghton family traveled the western U.S, from French Gulch, California to Myrtle Creek and Winston, Oregon. They eventually settled in Juneau, Alaska. A logging accident in 1953 claimed the life of Glady's beloved "Red". Needing to be closed to family and friends, Gladys, with no driver license and little driving experience, loaded up the family's flat fender jeep, heading for Oregon and was the last vehicle on the Alcan highway before it closed for winter. Gladys would steer and Charlie would shift on command. This adventure took them to Oakland, California and on to Albuquerque, New Mexico. By 1958, Gladys and the kids were in Las Cruces, where she worked at White Sands Proving Ground in the Motor Pool. She met and married Robert "Bob" Black in 1960. Gladys and Bob continue the adventures with travels to Mexico, camping excursions and their famous fishing trips. Gladys was a phenomenal artist and seamstress. Her crafts ranged from Ceramics, oil paintings, wood working to quilting. She loved to teach her crafts to anyone willing to learn. Gladys was as avid reader from an early age. Her theory was that if you could read a story, you could go anywhere without ever leaving your home. She loved animals and had quite a menagerie of pets from dogs, cats, and birds of all sorts, fish and probably a few unknowns. 1. [NMDONAAN] Vocale Garce Grazia Panzone Obit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Vocale, Garzia, Panzone Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4330/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces Sun News 21 May 2010 Longtime Luna County resident Grace (Grazia) Panzone Vocale died May 14 at the home her husband built for their family more than 70 years ago. True to her name, she passed gracefully into that good night. She was 94. Grace Panzone was born Aug. 19,1915 to Michele Panzone and Angela Mastrovalerio in San Nicandro Garganico province of Foggia, Italy. After her formative schooling, Grace took sewing lessons from a tailor who taught her the fine art of detailing visible in the beautiful clothes Grace sewed for herself and later for her three daughters. When not in sewing lessons, Grace's mother taught her to make the crusty Italian bread that would serve as a hallmark of her cooking skills when she married and moved to Deming. When Grace was 16, she and her future husband, Emanuel Vocale, began a long distance courtship through their mutual parents that would span five years and nine time zones. Although Grace had known Emanuel from childhood, neither had seen the other since Emanuel and his mother sailed for America in 1926 to join his father. The courtship resulted in a marriage celebrated in San Nicandro on Jan. 16, 1937. After their marriage, the couple planned to return to Deming together in April. But remaining in Italy became unsafe for Emanuel, now an American citizen traveling on a three-month visa. World War II was looming and Benito Mussolini was declaring all Italians the world over repatriated to serve in the Italian military. Emanuel left a heart-broken Grace two days before Mussolini's men came calling. A frightened Grace sailed to America alone in April. Grace and Emanuel arrived in Deming by train at 10 in the morning on Apr. 28, 1937. They were met by Emanuel's parents Carmela and Nunzio (Nick) Vocale who, Grace later wrote, "Welcomed me into their arms, their home, their lives. My new life began." Through Emanuel's parents, Grace made many friends. Although she spoke not one word of English, she said she recognized friendship in the faces of Deming residents. Soon Grace began wowing her new friends with her culinary skills. Her homemade crusty bread won friends near, far, and wide. Her pizza became legendary as "Grace's Pizza." With Grace's pizza and crusty Italian bread and Emanuel's homemade wine, husband and wife graciously entertained their friends in true Italian tradition. As the years passed, Grace and Emanuel continued to celebrate the relationships they enjoyed with their friends by delivering fresh fruit from their private orchard and fresh vegetables from their private garden. Grace and Emanuel never forgot their friends. Whether their friends were ailing or whether they were aging, the couple always found time to visit their friends. Grace would take a little eggplant or a little zucchini and always, always her fresh bread. She and Emanuel maintained the tradition of food and drink and friendship their entire lives. Despite her busy household, Grace was active in Garden Club where she displayed her beautiful irises and peonies. She was also active in Mimbres Hospital Auxiliary, Rotary Anns, Golden Gossip, P.E.O, and the Country Store bazaar at Holy Family Catholic Church. Grace and Emanuel moved into their current home on the farm west of Deming in 1939. While Emanuel grew the farm operation, Grace managed the household. Both Emanuel and Grace stressed the value of education to their children and the gift of US citizenship the children acquired by simply being born in the United States. The couple remained proud U.S. citizens and residents of Deming, Luna County, New Mexico throughout their lives. Grace was preceded in death by infant son Nunzio, adult son Carl Emanuel, and beloved husband Emanuel. She is survived by daughters Nellie Vocale Rabidoux (Ken), Gloria Vocale Moskowitz (Sy), and Mary Lou Vocale. Grandchildren Julie and John E. Janecka; David, Richard, and Sharon Vocale. Great grandchildren Ryan, Courtney, Bailee, and Drake Janecka; Richelle, Jada, and Cara Vocale; Gabriel and Diego Freire. Devoted sisters-in-law Rose Vocale Haferkamp (Hugh) and Anne Vocale Butterfield (Bernie). Nephews Nazarrio Vocale, Michele Di Maggio, and Michele, Matteo, and Antonio Cristino of Italy. Nieces Carmela Torella, Rosina Soccio, and Maria Sticozzi of Italy. Niece Angelina Figliola of Australia. Friends are invited to greet the family at 5 p.m. today at Baca's Chapel. Patricia Salesses will lead the Rosary immediately thereafter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Thursday. Father Enrique Lopez Escalera will officiate. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions in Grace's name to Mimbres Valley Hospice at 113 N. Pearl, Deming, N.M. 88030; and to Holy Family Catholic Church at 615 S. Author: marcenath Surnames: Dean, O'Shee Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4328/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces Sun News 18 May 2010 She got it right. Margaret Ida O'Shee Dean lived life her way, right up to her passing on May 14, at 85 years young. Growing up an asthmatic child of Patrick and Anna Aertker O'Shee in the swamps of Alexandria, Louisiana, "snatchin' 'gators with the boys," she dreamed of some day heading west, to drier air and. "fewer damn trees! Where a body can actually see farther than fifty yards. And no stinkin' kudzu creepin' all over everything!" As young women during WWII, she and older sister, Hazel, worked as Rosie Riveters at a war plant in Dallas, TX, assembling P-39 "Lightning" fighter aircraft, while younger brother John served in the military. Following V-J Day, and the subsequent termination of most of the U.S. female workforce, at the age of 22 she finally did head west. White Sands Proving Grounds hired her in 1947 as a clerk-typist, where she was fortunate enough to be part of the beginning of the "space race." As a WSMR pioneer, she was included in the 1985 PBS documentary "First It Fizzled, Then It Flew," sharing many (colorful) stories of the V-2 rocket tests, and her associations with notables such as Clyde Tombaugh and Vernher von Braun. Oh, yes, and while at White Sands, she also married the boss, Personnel Department chief Roy L. Dean. In 1952, and with a new baby girl in tow, they moved to Guam through the Civil Service, where Roy was again personnel officer. After a couple of escapade-filled years, they returned to the mainland for stints in Florida, Oklahoma and eventually back to Las Cruces and the home Roy had built with his own hands, in 1951. Craving more overseas adventure, they moved to Subic Bay Naval Base, Republic of the Philippines in 1967. During their three years' stay, Margaret and Roy visited Hong Kong, Taiwan, Guam, Thailand and Japan, as well as the many outlying South Pacific islands. Margaret worked in the production office of the motion picture "Too Late The Hero," becoming the friend and confidant of the starring actors, and later volunteered at the Subic Bay hospital, caring for the wounded soldiers serving in Viet Nam, only 800 miles away. Returning to the United States in 1970, Margaret helped found the Mesilla Valley Iris Society. Hybridizing over 600 iris varieties and as a test-garden for Schreiner's Gardens, her yard was always a breath-taking April showcase. "Queen of Show" awards became commonplace. Growing flowers and sharing her horticulture knowledge were her first loves. Her second were RVing and fishing throughout the western U.S., Canada and northern Mexico with Roy, when he retired in 1973. Having given away tens of thousands of cuttings and rhizomes, over the decades Margaret has spread beauty around the world. Throughout her travels and exploits, she saw and experienced most of it. Yep, she got it right. Survivors include daughter Melody Dean Groves and husband Myke, of Albuquerque, NM; granddaughter Erin Groves Montoya, husband Victor Ray and greatgrandsonsColton and Mykael of Anthony, NM; granddaughter Haley Groves Crawford and husband Adam, of Albuquerque, NM. Donations may be made to the Mesilla Valley Iris Society c/o Ann Colwell, 905 W. Taylor, Las Cruces, N. M. 88007. A celebration of life for both Margaret and Roy, who preceded her in 2002, is being planned for June 11, 2010. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
