Author: marcenath Surnames: Brown, Stein, Burke Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4469/mb.ashx Message Board Post: "Heaven's my real home; I'm just here on a visit" was a favorite saying of Lorn Brown, 71, of Las Cruces, NM who returned home on Thursday, June 24 when he passed peacefully in his sleep at Memorial Medical Center. He was born in East Chicago, Indiana on September 18, 1938 to Harry and Dalene (nee Moore) Brown. Lorn spent his childhood on the South Side of Chicago in the home of his mother and the company of his aunts Iva, Nina, Mary, Kathryn, Noreen and cousins Buddy, Peggy and Mary Jo. F ollowing the death of his mother, he was welcomed into the family of Jack and Joy O'Brien, who had five teenage boys of their own whom he considered brothers. He remained lifelong friends with the boys from the neighborhood and looked forward to seeing them at their annual reunions. He attended Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago, IL before joining the Air Force at the age of 15. Following stints in the Army, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine, he returned to Chicago where he worked in the steel mills while attending Midwestern Broadcasting School. After beginning his broadcasting career, he completed his Associates degree at Illinois Central College and took additional coursework at University of Illinois - Chicago. He furthered his craft by studying at the Ted Liss School of Performing Arts. In June of 1961, he married Patricia Stein in Springfield, IL. They had two sons, Bonner and Richard. He often spoke proudly of their achievements; particularly Bonner's linguistic abilities and Rich's military service. On October 26, 1984, he married Elizabeth Burke in Hinsdale, IL. They had one daughter, Jacqueline. He was so proud to see the capable young women she has become and was excited for her future. With his easy recollection of names and dates and his gift for storytelling, he found his calling as a sportscaster. Lorn's early career was spent in downstate Illinois, where he covered both high school and Illinois State University athletics. His excellence led to his 1973 induction into the Illinois Basketball Coach's Association Hall of Fame. While downstate, he worked as a precinct captain during the 1960 election campaign of President Kennedy. Although his career choice excluded his continued involvement in politics, it remained a vital interest throughout his life. Lorn's first love was baseball and he had the opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a big league announcer with the Iowa Oaks AAA farm club before making it to "The Show" with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1974. In 1976 he returned to his hometown and became the radio play-by-play announcer for the Chicago White Sox. He had fond recollections of being hired by Sox owner Bill Veeck, who advised him "Have Fun!" Over the years, he cherished the time spent with his partners in the booth including Mike Shannon (St. Louis Cardinals); Harry Carey, Del Crandall, Don Drysdale, Joe McConnell, Jimmy Piersall and Early Winn (Chicago White Sox); Johnny "Red" Kerr (Chicago Bulls); Bob Uecker (Milwaukee Brewers); Ralph Kiner (New York Mets). One of his most exciting moments was calling the game in 1983 when the White Sox clinched the division title. One of his favorite events to call was the annual charity softball game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Oak Brook Police. Additionally, he announced for the Chicago Blitz; Chicago Cougars; Big Ten, ACC, Metro and Missouri Valley conferences, as well as Bradley, Drake, Notre Dame and DePaul universities. In 1994, he was delighted when he received a call from Mike Veeck, asking him to do the television coverage of the St. Paul Saints and returned to baseball for two years. Since arriving in Las Cruces in 2005, Lorn enjoyed working on the NMSU Coach's Show (radio) and doing public address for the Aggie women's softball team. A member of AFTRA and the Screen Actors Guild, he did many commercial and industrial voiceovers and appeared in the films Damien Omen II and Grumpier Old Men. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with aspiring broadcasters and taught broadcasting modules at Illinois State University, Columbia College, Illinois Central College, Illinois Broadcast Center, National Sportscasters Camp and Seneca High School. Lorn was a proud member of the Frank Leahy American Legion Post and supported the Red Cloud Indian Mission and Valentine Boys and Girls Club. He was awarded the USMC Iwo Jima Award for his work with wounded veterans. With his gift of gab, kind heart and ability to put those around him at ease, Lorn never met a stranger. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, sons Bonner (Craighton Cooper) Brown of Dallas, TX; Rich (Evelyn) Brown of Arlington, WA; daughter Jacqueline Brown of Las Cruces, NM; granddaughter Toni Marie Brown (Scott) Meek of Oceanside, CA; great-grandson Brendon Meeks of Oceanside, CA; brothers Bruce (Pam) Brown of Farmington Hills, MI; Earl (Bonnie) Brown of Ypsilanti, MI; David (Roxanne) Brown of Atlanta, GA; John (Kay) O'Brien of Libertyville, IL: Jim (Mary Ellen) O'Brien of Peru, IL; Mike (Linda) O'Brien of Crestwood, IL; Paul (Jane) O'Brien of Land o' Lakes, FL; Bill (Mary Jane) Ryan of Lambertville, MI; his beloved aunt Noreen Moore of Alexandria, VA; mother-in-law Marylea Burke of Las Cruces; cousin Buddy Keay of Calumet City, IN, as well as numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. Lorn is preceded in death by his brother Pat O'Brien; cousins Judy and Mary Jo; father-in-law Ned Burke and nephew Tebr Rothrock. Author: marcenath Surnames: Seis, Loyd Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4465/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Verna Lee (Beets) Loyd, Seis June 18, 1922 - June 1, 2010 On June 01, 2010 our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother left us to join the Lord, the beautiful wonders of the universe and to be with her awesome images in the clouds. Lee was born and raised in Albuquerque, N.M. She graduated from Albuquerque High in 1938. During her high school years she was known as "Sugar" Beets. She had her own radio show and was part of the "Follies" which landed her an audition in Hollywood. As life would happen, she was called back home. She lived several times in California, throughout her adult life. The ocean was never far from her heart. In Albuquerque Verna Lee was an interior decorator and sales woman for American Furniture. She also owned her own framing studio where she and her Son Rick worked together framing pictures. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Yucca Temple #74 in Albuquerque, NM and Eastern Star with her daughter Candy, in Las Cruces, NM. While there, she was a partner with Jim and Peggy Boyer at the Solano square Florist. Eventually, Lee moved back to Albuquerque and was happily married to August Seis Jr. until the time of his death. For a second time, she would move to Las Cruces, NM to be near her Son and Daughter in-law Ty and Connie Loyd and to enjoy her youngest twin grandchildren Shawn and Moni'ka. While in Las Cruces, she helped in any way she could to build her Son's church, Church Triumphant, where she was an active member for 6 years. She would later live in Boise, ID. While there, in her 70's she joined with her daughter, Sally Sabino, as a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. The last months of her life were spent with daughter Candy Spry near the ocean in Lincoln City, Oregon. Once again, Lee enjoyed rides along the coast line, feeding the seagulls, lunching on her favorite shrimp and enjoying "art" in the clouds. Mother was talented in all the arts. She played the piano all her life up until two weeks before she passed. She excelled in all dancing and art. She received blue ribbons for several of her oil paintings in California, and was talented in watercolors, oils and other creative art. She was still sketching up until the end. Mother, you came into this world a "Free Spirit" - Lived as a "Free Spirit" and left this world a gentle "Free Spirit." You built an inspiring life around your children with a loving heart. You taught us creativity and the ability to appreciate everything around us, from the clouds in the sky to the people who came into our paths. We are so grateful we were a part of your wonderful life, Mother, and we wish you sunny days, always. You will be missed by your family, but never far from our hearts. In loving memory, Lee is survived by her children, Sally Caye (Bob) Sabino of Boise, Idaho; Richard Bryan (Lonna) Witt of Mesa, Arizona; Candyce Lee (Randy) Spry of Lincoln City, Oregon; and Marvin Tyrone (Connie) Loyd of Las Cruces, New Mexico; grandchildren, Jim Sabino, Rod Sabino, Kimberlee Benson, Kelly Kemp, Moni'ka Lee Loyd Barnett (Jared) and Shawn Paul Loyd; great-grandchildren, Brandi, Aline, Kenny, Austin, Olivia, Victoria, Joshua, Hannah; and another great-grandson due October. Author: marcenath Surnames: Elder, Mendez Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4464/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It is with great sadness that I say a temporary goodbye to my brother Chris. Chris passed on to his eternal reward in Austin, Texas on June 15, 2010. Chris was born into our happy family on March 20, 1959 in Durango, Colorado on the first day of spring as Christopher Lee Elder. In 1996 Chris was reborn into God's Heavenly Family by accepting and being baptized into Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In this life, Chris excelled in school and had the rare opportunity of being taught by our Mother Billye J. Elder at Mesilla Park Elementary School. It was this experience that gave Chris the confidence to meet his life challenges first by earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Business Systems Analysis and Business Management from New Mexico State University, and throughout his life as a leader and visionary in his business career. After College Chris was carried by his determination and skills to many destinations including El Paso, Texas where he was chosen and developed award winning computer programs, some of which were custom designed for the State of Texas. Next, his career path took him to Austin, Texas. And, just like a blooming flower in the spring, it was Austin where Chris most enjoyed his life. The beauty of Austin with its many trees, clear flowing rivers and streams, and gorgeous Bluebonnets inspired Chris to reach new heights in his personal and business life. Chris enjoyed writing poetry, rescuing and taking care of little animals, anything computer, learning new things, gardening at home, biking on the many urban trails in Austin, and just hanging out with friends and family. All who had the pleasure of knowing Chris thought of him as a loving person who was always there for them. His smile and devotion to friends, colleagues, and family set him apart and helped make him the success in life that he became. Chris was preceded in death by our Dad Barney Elder and our Mother Billye J. Elder and is survived by his brother William Craig, and Boots, his cat. Chris will be memorialized in Las Cruces, New Mexico with a special place of honor next to our Dad and Mom at Masonic Cemetery, and also at his request, RemembranceGardens.com in Austin, Texas, a peaceful setting with flowing streams, waterfalls, and of course, lots of beautiful flowers. I should mention too that while working in El Paso, Texas Chris met Ms. Julie Mendez. They were together for many years and while in Austin Chris helped Ms. Mendez earn her degree from UT Austin. After graduating and starting work with Dell Computers, Ms. Mendez and Chris decided to wed. Chris honored me, his brother with being the Best Man at his wedding. Tragically for Chris, Ms. Mendez was an unfaithful wife which caused him excruciating inner pain and suffering. As Proverbs puts it so well, Give me your heart, my son, And let your eyes delight in my ways, for a harlot is a deep pit, and an adulterous woman is a narrow well. Surely she lurks as a robber and increases the faithless among men.
