She was born December 21, 1949 in Las Cruces to Benjamin "Chamin" and Estefana Garcia. Minnie married Joe Holguin in 1972; together they moved to Arenas Valley and later welcomed their son, Edward, who was her pride and joy. A very loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing bingo and traveling, as well visiting and praying in various churches. Those left to mourn her passing include her husband, Joe; son, Edward Holguin and wife, Bernadette all of Lewisville; two stepsons, Gary Holguin and wife, Shirley, and Joe Holguin; her parents, Chamin and Estefana; four sisters, Theresa Ruiz and husband George, Cecelia Sanchez and husband Victor, Elizabeth Mauer and husband John and Lucy Benavidez and husband, Martin all of Las Cruces. Other survivors include her grandchildren, Analicia and Samantha Holguin also of Lewisville, Josh, Vanessa and Raymond Holguin of Las Cruces and Jake Holguin of Phoenix, Arizona. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Adrian Holguin. Cremation has taken place by Dalton Funeral Home in Lewisville. Recitation of the Rosary and a Memorial Mass will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, August 05, 2010 in St. Genevieve Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina. She will reach her final resting place with inurnment of her cremains to follow in St. Genevieve Columbarium. She proudly and whole heartedly devoted herself to the future and success of her daughters and husband. She unselfishly gave up her dreams for the dreams of her family. Neva's laugh, her smile, her wittiness, her outlook on life and her ability to miraculously appear at others time of need was a God given gift. Neva is the shining star of our lives. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born August 15, 1961 in Kittery, Maine to Albert and Nancy Schmitt. Joe proudly served in the United States Navy as an Electronics Technician and as a Nuclear Reactor Operator on the USS Aspro SSN 648 and the USS Hawkbill SSN 666, both fast attack submarines. After his naval service Joe settled with his family in Las Cruces and worked as a technician at the White Sands Test Facility near Las Cruces. Joe was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a shooting sports enthusiast, but his family was his true passion. Joe will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew and loved him. Joe was preceded in death by his Father Albert Eugene Schmitt and is survived by his Mother, Nancy Schmitt of Albuquerque, NM; loving wife Shirley and daughter Sarah of the family home and son, Christopher, currently serving in the US Navy and stationed at NAS North Island, San Diego CA. Joe is also survived by his sister Mary Bowman of McDonough, GA; brother Robert Schmitt and wife Tina of Los Lunas, NM; Sister Jenny Miller and husband Todd of Monument, CO; and Brother James Schmitt and spouse Thomas Myrick of San Diego, CA. Martin III, a 30 year resident of Las Cruces, passed away at his home on Thursday, July 22nd, at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor Martin, and is survived by his two children, Garland E. Martin IV and Deborah L. Martin, his four grandchildren, Chester Martin, Heidi Osborn, Katrina Fiebig and Sonya Fiebig and two great-grandchildren, Connor and Kea Osborn. Garland served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and was the recipient of the Atlantic and Mediterranean Middle East War Zone combat bars. His time in the Merchant Marines marked the beginning of a life-long love affair with travel. After the war, Garland earned a University degree and entered the world of finance and accounting. He moved to Las Cruces after retirement from International Paper Company and died, having visited with his wife, most countries in the world. Burial with military honors will be at Fort Bayard National Cemetery in Silver City, New Mexico, on Tuesday, July 27. His brothers Richard and David preceded him in death. Eugene was born at Hotel Dieu in El Paso on February 18, 1931, the third son of Bernadette Droste Emerson and James Ritchie Emerson. Eugene attended grammar schools in La Mesa and at St. Patrick's in El Paso. He graduated from Cathedral High School in El Paso and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from New Mexico A&M. After serving two years in the US Army, Eugene returned to the family farm in La Mesa and continued a 60 year farming career. Eugene was known for his love of books and his studies of religion, agriculture, politics, science, mining and history. Eugene is survived by a sister, Carolyn Adams of San Miguel, NM and a brother, Jerome Emerson of San Francisco, California. Silva and later moved to Hawthorne, California where she worked for many years with Sears-Roebuck as a shipping clerk. Luisa will always be remembered for her love of birds, especially "Chiquita", her parrot, and tending to her garden. Survivors include her nieces, Paula Alba Roe (Don) and Yolanda Alba Vega (Ed); her nephews, Salvador Fernando Alba (Belinda), Ricardo Alba (Patte Anne), Armando Alba (Judy), Ramon Alba (Johanna), Abelardo Alba (Diana) and Eddie Alba (Kathy), as well as Marcos and Doroteo Armijo. In addition, she was loved and will be missed by many great-nieces and nephews. Jayden's parents made the brave and selfless decision to allow his memory to live on through the gift of organ donation. He was the son of Naval NCO Joseph Andrew Johnson and Claire Johnson. He went to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Joe and his parents moved extensively throughout the United States during his father's naval career. He graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland, California and attended the University of San Francisco where he played baseball and obtained his degree in Foreign Affairs. Joe played semi-pro baseball, then joined the United States Navy, graduating from the Officer's Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1956. He spent the next eight years as an officer in the Navy, traveling around the world serving mainly in Southeast Asia. Joe met his wife, Denyse Ryan, in 1959 while stationed in Long Beach, California. They were married on July 31, 1960 at the Naval Chapel on Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay. After leaving the Navy, Joe's career as a Corporate Relations Manager for Fortune 100 companies took him from California to Ohio and then Missouri. Joe and his wife retired to Las Cruces 2005. Joe was involved in many civic organizations including serving as chairman of the Sister City Committee for Independence, Missouri, Jackson Country Mental Health Board and Independence Neighborhood Council. He loved his family, reading Greek and Roman history, cheering on the Los Angeles Dodgers and collecting stamps. Joe was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Denyse, sons Sean of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Patrick of Longmont, Colorado, daughter in law Marcia Johnson and grandson Ian Johnson of Grand Forks and brother and sister in law Lee and Reta Mounger of Broomfield, Colorado. Magallanez. Felipe was raised in Hammond, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University in 1983 and settled in Albuquerque where he resided over the past 25 years. He loved his Alma Mater, serving as past President and charter member of the Albuquerque area Purdue Alumni Association. Felipe grew up with a love of sports as he was an active golfer, bowler, and hunter. A paralyzing medical condition during his youth did not stop him and he defied medical odds that he would ever walk again. Felipe was employed by the Albuquerque Public School system. He was an active volunteer in Albuquerque at major bowling tournaments, worked and volunteered at countless basketball and volleyball tournaments as a scorekeeper, both with the school district and within the community. He was also a member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Albuquerque. He was born September 5, 1932 in Ordway, Colorado to Salvador M. and Juliana Alvarez Magallanes. Salvador was a beloved father, friend, uncle and neighbor. A loving father of 8 children, he instilled the sense that hard work leads to its own reward. He believed in the importance of an education which led to all of his children attending college. Upon retiring after 25 years from Inland Steel, he relocated to Las Cruces from Hammond, IN. During much of his retirement, he raised and milked cows. He became known throughout many Las Cruces neighborhoods as "The Asadero Man" delivering the cheese product to countless residents. Several back surgeries did not stop him from tending to his yard and rose garden. People would come from distant locations to visit and clip a rose or two. His green thumb was a feature story on TV about his thriving orange tree, which is uncommon in Las Cruces, thanks to his love to grow, his knowledge, and his efforts. Over the years, he regularly attended, as well as volunteered his time and resources to Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. She took on her role as Momma Hen here too and was a strong and passionate caregiver to countless patients and their families. When not caring for her ward of patients, Momma Hen was sure to be babysitting her granddaughter, making food with her daughters, or having long conversations with her sons; forever putting others first was her great strength. We will all miss you very much and the world is a dimmer place without you here. The daughter of Bill and Ora Hollingsworth, "Dottie" was born on March 08, 1937, in West Virginia. She moved to Las Cruces where she later married Albert Lee Standridge. The couple spent many years moving between Las Cruces and several small Texas towns. Dottie is survived by five of her children: son Terry Hollingsworth and his wife Shirley of Las Cruces; daughter Donna Davis and her husband Daniel Henslee of Borger, Texas; daughter Connie Maynard and her husband Lance Maynard of Borger, Texas; daughter Audrey Russell and her husband Robert of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and son Stan Standridge and his wife Susan of Abilene, Texas. Dottie is also survived by her two siblings, sister Joan Damewood of West Virginia and her brother Ron Hollingsworth of California. Dottie had nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Dottie will always be remembered as a mother who struggled to keep her family close, through good times and bad. Those who call her Grandma will remember her laughter and giving heart.
