    1. [NMDONAAN] Hicks Calvin W. Obit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Hicks, Fastabend Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4659/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Calvin W. Hicks, 85, of Las Cruces died peacefully the morning of August 17, 2010 with two of his daughters by his side and warmly wrapped in the love of his entire family and friends. Cal is now home with our Lord and Cathy, his beloved wife of 59 years; his father, George Wilson Hicks; his mother, Lena J. Courshon Hicks; son-in-law, Carl Kitchens; cousin, Emma E. DeWitt, and numerous other family members who preceded him in death. Cal's passions, his love for our Lord, his love for family and his love for country, were the foundation of his life. Cal was born November 08, 1924 in the small farming community of Java, South Dakota. Although an only child, Cal loyally cherished the older brother role he adopted with his cousin Emma who also lived in Java. Cal left South Dakota in 1943 to answer his country's call to duty in the Untied States Army during World War II. He was wounded in combat maneuvers preceding the German's last major offensive in the Ardennes leading to the Battle of the Bulge. Following a period of rehabilitation in Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, Cal entered Texas A&M, earned a Petroleum Engineering Degree and was commissioned as a 1st Lt. in the Army. Shortly after receiving his commission he deployed as a forward observer, behind enemy lines during the Korean War. He returned to marry Catherine Louise Fastabend of Petersburg, Virginia on December 29, 1951. Their partnership was foreve! r sealed by their shared sense of adventure found in travel, children and their abiding faith in God. Immediately following his tour of duty in Korea, he was recruited by a fledgling governmental organization, formed in 1947, to carry on the mission of the Office of Strategic Services to counter the growing threat of communist expansion that began to emerge in the wake of World War II. His service with the Central Intelligence Agency lasted for the duration of his professional career. He often mentioned that the highlight of his career was being able to be with his wife and children, bringing together all his passions while he served his country in Pakistan, in a desolate outpost near the Khyber Pass. The three youngest of their six children were born in a Rawalpindi mission hospital during his four years tour of duty there. He lived to see several of his grandchildren continue his legacy of military service and serve their country with honor, during their deployments in ne! ighboring Afghanistan and other regions of the world. Cal lived to know all of his children are successful and secure and all his grandchildren care deeply about others and the world around them. He lived to know we all cherish what he fought for, served and protected and those ideals are being passed on to his great grandchildren. Ultimately there are no words that can completely capture the expansiveness of Cal's life. The words that come closest are faith, family, and country. This is the legacy that makes his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren heirs to a treasure more valuable than all the world's riches. A legacy for which his family will be forever grateful for. Cal is survived by six children; four daughters, Theresa Louise Hicks, Mary Catherine Westermann and husband Granville, Lisa Anne Wooten and husband Daryl, Patricia Elaine Knight and husband Daric; two sons, Michael Calvin Hicks and wife Celeste, Daniel Christopher Hicks and wife Annette; nineteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Visitation for Mr. Hicks will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2010 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road where the Rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Family and friends will join together to celebrate the funeral mass at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010 in St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina with Reverend Ricardo Bauza officiating. The rite of committal and interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho with military honors accorded by a Fort Bliss Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League - El Perro Diablo Detachment. Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons, Adam and Michael Westermann, Nathaniel Hicks, Matthew and Andrew Cardon and great grandson, Karl Calvin Cardon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Medical Mission Sisters, (8400 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111 www.medicalmissionsisters.org) or your local charity of choice. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Taylor, Daniels Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4658/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces sun new 23 August 2010 Celebration marks 90 years for J. Paul TaylorBy S. MESILLA - J. Paul Taylor is celebrating his 90th birthday, but we get the gifts: a community fiesta and a legacy that will include a state museum in the historic Mesila Plaza adobe home he shared with his wife, Mary Helen Daniels Taylor, and their seven children. Taylor's distinguished career as an educator, administrator and state legislator will be commemorated at a free public celebration from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28 on the Mesilla Plaza. "Festivities will include music, refreshments and a brief ceremony," said Cynthia Garrett, chairwoman of Friends of the Taylor Family Monument. "People are being asked to leave copies of photographs or written recollections of activities they shared with J. Paul, as he is known to friends and colleagues, or Mr. Taylor, as he is still called by former students. There also will be opportunities to talk with J. Paul and to share their good wishes with him." In 2003, J. Paul, his wife Mary, who died in 2007, and their family donated the Taylors' historic Mesilla Plaza home and two commercial buildings to the Museum of New Mexico as a state monument. "We decided his birthday was just the perfect opportunity to honor him, and a chance to highlight the monument," said Sally Cutter, who helped plan the event. She said Taylor is a role model for aging gracefully and productively. "He just keeps going. His mind is so sharp and he's so interested in what's going on," Cutter said. "This is a great opportunity to honor J. Paul and to help support the Taylor family legacy. Once fully operational, the Taylor Monument will provide an exceptional setting for people to understand and appreciate the architecture, culture, and history of the Mesilla Valley as a living tradition. That's the essence of J. Paul's contribution to this community and lies at the heart of this celebration," Garret said. Officially known as the Taylor-Barela-Reynolds-Mesilla State Monument (Taylor Monument), the building "exemplifies mid-19th century New Mexico architecture. The Taylor family donation also includes a large collection of paintings, furniture, photographs, books, tools, textiles, and religious objects," Garrett said. "This (party) is a little bit embarrassing for me, but I hope everybody will enjoy it," said Taylor, adding that he has heard that family members, friends and colleagues from throughout the United States are planning to attend the celebration. "If my life has been any kind of success, and sometimes I doubt that it was, it was because of the people at my side who were helping. I've spent all my life here and I love this valley. I have great kids and my wife Mary gets the credit for that. My mother was Hispanic and my father was Irish and I think I gained a lot from both worlds," Taylor said. In lieu of birthday gifts, Garrett suggested donations to the nonprofit Friends of the Taylor Family Monument. A believer in personal responsibility and "the show must go on", Frank once performed a rapid xylophone solo with his mallet wedged in his cast after having broken his arm playing softball the night before. Realizing that dyslexic students in our community face tremendous challenges in obtaining effective therapy in the basic skills of reading and math, Frank accepted a position as a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Dyslexia Institute of Southern New Mexico, Inc. Under his capable leadership as president of the board, the organization obtained registration as a charity in the State of New Mexico, enabling it to provide scholarship assistance to individuals of all ages. A leader for 20 years at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and United Church of Christ in Las Cruces, Frank served on the board in numerous capacities, taught children's Sunday school, and led the adult study group. He always welcomed open and educated discussions of any topic. In addition to his degree in music, Frank completed degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering at NMSU as advised by his friend and mentor Don Paterson. He began his 25-year career in Space Communications as a student with Spacecom at the NASA Johnson Space Flight Center and continued employment with Contel, GTE, and General Dynamics. Most recently, he was Chief Engineer with the General Dynamics CD4S team. In times of complexities and frustrations, his coworkers would say, "WWFD - What Would Frank Do." Their suggestion is that we continue asking this in all aspects of our lives. Frank is survived by his wife of 25 years, Nancy Burr, and children Isaac Hartman and Lara Zel Hartman; parents Sara Hartman of Green Bay, WI, and Joel Hartman of Tulsa, OK; sisters Tina Hartman of Proctorville, OH, Anita Hartman (Ron McDowell) and daughter Karen McDowell of Tulsa, OK, and Elizabeth Delvaux (Paul) and daughters Julia and Olivia of Green Bay, WI; parents-in-law, Marcus and Margaret Burr of Las Cruces; two brothers-in-law: Ted Burr (Elizabeth) of Deming, NM, and children Matt Burr of Irving, TX and Sarah Nichols of Deming, NM, and John Burr (Ruth Gronquist) and daughters Erika and Anna of Fairbanks, AK; two aunts Lorie Luck (Karl) and children Todd and Lisa of Ketchikan, AK and Bernice Eder and children Kristin and Harold of Newtown Square, PA; Janie Markert of Lebanon, PA; Lynnda Emery of Proctorville, OH; and DeanAnn Edwards Saenz of Bowling Green, OH. His brother Eric Hartman and partner James Marks preceded him in death. All children loved Frank. He had too many friends to count. He was known for his integrity, intelligence, friendliness, and kindness to all -- even strangers. He had a remarkable sense of humor and an unforgettable laugh. Frank is deeply missed as a loving husband, father, family member, and friend. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Frank Hartman Music Scholarship through the Mesilla Valley Concert Band, c/o Anita Feil, Treasurer, 6596 Rio Dorado Ct, La Mesa, NM 88044, or the Franklin Hartman Scholarship at the Dyslexia Institute of Southern New Mexico, Inc., P.O. Box 13507, Las Cruces, NM 88013. A celebration of Frank's life will take place on Saturday, September 04, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces.
