Author: marcenath Surnames: Handy, Flynn Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4814/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Henry Wesley Handy, known to family and friends as "Wes" died peacefully on Thursday, September 30, 2010. Along with his wife, Nadine, Wes was to owner of several local businesses, among them, Little Playmates Early Childhood Education and Development Centers, Casa De Oro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the Aristocrat and Adobe Assisted Living Communities, and Mountain Shadows Home Care Services. Born on December 23, 1921, in Jerome, Idaho, Wes was the oldest of five children. He grew up on the Handy family farm, which was without electricity and running water until 1935. Wes attended school in a one-room schoolhouse, and his mother, Hazel, drove the horse and wagon that served as the town's school bus. Wes often fondly recalled the day his father, Wade, purchased the farm's first tractor and replaced the family's mule team. Always one to seize new opportunities, Wes also loved to recall the time he sold his horse "Shorty" for $10 and bought his first bicycle. In 1944, Wes married Nadine Flynn of Butte, Montana. After graduating from University of Idaho, he worked as a public school administrator in Washington State and received a PhD from the University of Washington. In 1965, the Handys moved to Las Cruces, where Wes took a position as a professor at New Mexico State University. When he received a full tenured professorship, Wes left the university and started a successful management consulting company, working nationwide. Beginning in 1970, Wes and Nadine started a number of prominent and successful daycare centers and nursing homes, as well as a number of other ventures. These businesses continue to operate throughout Southern New Mexico today and employ over 600 people. Wes is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nadine; a son, Grey and daughter-in-law, Dianne DeLayo of Santa Fe, and his beloved granddaughters, Ryan Maye Handy of New York, New York, and Brett Elise Handy of Santa Monica, California. Author: marcenath Surnames: Emerick Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4813/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lewis E. (Ed) Emerick Jr. born July 21, 1954 departed from this earth on October 1, 2010 after sustaining a massive stroke. He is survived by Joanne Emerick, his wife of 34 years and children Anna & Chris Biad, Daniel and Jenna Emerick, Katherine, and Nathanael, his mother Sara C. Emerick, Deborrah and Bob Buckler and Camilla Haisten, his sisters. His precious grandchildren are Sara and Simon Biad. There are numerous nieces and nephews that are part of our family and were loved by Ed. Ed was born and raised in Las Cruces and followed in his father's footsteps in becoming a well respected homebuilder and developer, starting his own business in 1978. Ed cared for his clients and was grateful for them all and built homes of dignity and architectural beauty. Ed was gifted as a creator of unique home designs and enjoyed studying and teaching not only to improve in his professional goals, but to teach and give encouragement to others on their spiritual journeys. He participated for many years in leadership at University Presbyterian Church. Ed loved his family immensely. We all have many memories of his generosity, hours of reading to the children, funny jokes, trips to explore the old mines in the Hillsboro area of New Mexico, leadership in getting home schooling legalized in New Mexico in 1985, and his faithful care for his Mother, Sara. Our profound sorrow as his family is comforted only by the full assurance and belief that Ed is at home in Heaven where his joy has been made full. Ed believed completely that his source of help, strength, forgiveness in this life, and his hope for eternal life was only because of the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. Ed- husband, dad, son, brother, grandfather, and uncles, will be missed deeply. If anyone would like to know more about our or Ed's thoughts and hope in God, please feel free to contact us. We would love to talk more about this! The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be given to Campus Crusade for Christ (tax exempt organization which helps and has compassion on people the world over.) These donations can be mailed to CCC c/o Emerick, 945 Canterbury Arc, Las Cruces, NM 88005. Ed loved this organization and the many people we know who are on staff with CCC. Thank you to all who have given us kind words, food, prayers, the opportunity to be your builder and realtor and who have given us the blessing of friendship through the years. We are most grateful. 1. [NMDONAAN] Simpson Billie Ruth Ritter Obit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Simpson, Ritter, Fox Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4811/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces Sun News 7 Oct 2010 MESILLA - Billie Ruth Ritter Simpson, whose community service and sense of style, history and hospitality left a mark from the Cloudcroft Lodge, which she once owned, to New Mexico State University and the racetracks of Ruidoso and Sunland Park, died Wednesday in her Mesilla Park home. She was 95. "It is truly the loss of a grand lady," said her son C.W. "Buddy" Ritter, owner of the Double Eagle restaurant in Mesilla, who remembered that his mother often offered tips on the landmark restaurant's decor. "Billie Ruth has truly been a grand dame of Las Cruces, and a consummate hostess. Her many friends are grateful to have known and loved her, often joking that Billie would go to heaven while planning a party," her longtime friend Margaret Campbell said. Artist Sallie Ritter said her mother remained active in the community and her joie de vivre was still fully evident on a 2009 family cruise around the world. "She planned a Pirates of the Baltic party on the cruise and got us all patches and costumes. Mom was queen of the pirates. Her outfit included a black feather boa and diamonds and when she came in, everybody applauded," said Ritter, who added that her mom "was a fantastic business woman. Nothing was ever just handed to us. When we kids wanted anything, we had to make a detailed business plan. I made one when I wanted to study art in Scotland." Ritter Simpson was born in Joplin, Mo,. on Dec. 3, 1914, the only child of Carter and Estella Mae "Becky" Fox. The family moved to El Paso when she was 3. She graduated from El Paso High School and received her teaching certificate from the Texas College of Mines, now the University of Texas-El Paso. In 1933, she married John Barnes Ritter, founder of the J. B. Ritter Distributing Co. which marketed Texaco products here. The couple honeymooned at the Amador Hotel in Las Cruces. The pueblo-style home they built in Mesilla Park was recognized as a "building of historical significance for adhering to local architecture" by the Do-a Ana Historical Society. In 1953, they purchased the historic Cloudcroft Lodge in Cloudcroft, N.M., and she supervised lodge renovations and the extension to 18 holes of the golf course now known as one of the six highest-elevation golf courses in the world. The couple, both avid golfers, also helped found the Las Cruces Country Club and Ritter Simpson served as president of the Southwest Women's Golf Association and the Las Cruces Country Club Women's Golf Association. She was also a founding member of the Ruidoso Jockey Club, a partner in Temulac Stables and the owner of racehorse Winsham Lad, the speed record holder at Sunland Park Racetrack. John Ritter's 1954 death in a traffic crash left her a 39-year-old widow with four children. In 1957, she married W. K. "Ajax" Simpson, a Marfa, Texas, rancher and banker. They were enthusiastic world travelers until his death in 1997. As benefactor to NMSU, she established a graduate fellowship in business administration and was a member of the President's Associates, the University Ambassadors and Aggie Boosters. She actively oversaw the Charles R. and Dorothy S. Carter Chair in Business Administration, established at UTEP in memory of her father. She was a board member of Planned Parenthood, served as a volunteer candy striper at Memorial General Hospital and was president of the Las Cruces Garden Club. For 75 years, she was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, which was founded by John Ritter's great-grandfather, Dr. Edwin Burt, a surgeon in Mesilla. Her children revealed that she was also an accomplished ballet dancer, who once contemplated a professional dancing career. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 21 years, John B. Ritter, by her husband of 41 years, W. K. Ajax Simpson, by her son, John C. Ritter, and by her granddaughter, Peggy Ritter. She is survived by her son Charles W. "Buddy" Ritter and his wife, Margaret, of Mesilla Park; daughter Sallie Ritter Jacobs and her husband, Dr. Kent F. Jacobs, of Las Cruces; daughter Terri Ritter Finley and husband Dan, of Boulder, Colo.; and daughter-in-law Nancy Ritter Galter of Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at St. James Episcopal Church in Mesilla Park. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service that will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the La Posada chapel with Fr. Don Adamski officiating. The family wishes to thank Fr. Don. They also want to express their appreciation for two wonderful doctors - Stefan Schaeffer and Mark Abramson. We do not have adequate words to describe our deep appreciation to the entire staff at La Posada. There is no place that could have provided better care and support to our beloved father and family. God bless all of you. Que Dios les bendiga.
