Author: marcenath Surnames: Brody, Kroese, Werner Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4927/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dorothy Sandra Brody died on November 1, 2010, in Las Cruces, NM, from complications of Alzheimer's. She was 88 years old. Born in New York City on June 18, 1922, Dorothy was the only child and cherished daughter of Rae Kroese Werner and Bernard C. Werner. Dorothy was an honor student in high school and received a BBA from City College, NY, where she met her husband and life partner, Carl Brody. They married in 1945, and became an inseparable pair, in life, love, and business. They had no children, but enjoyed the love of an extended family of cousins in New York, Florida, and New Mexico. Dorothy worked as a CPA in the '40s, and went on to study law at NYU, attaining a law degree and entrance to the New York bar in 1952. Her husband Carl also became an attorney, and both specialized in tax law in New York State. Dorothy, with her husband, was an avid fan of horse racing, Italian cooking, Hollywood movies, The New York Times cross-word puzzles, languages, art, and big-band music. She also hand-knitted amazing sweaters for her husband and herself, and learned to design and sew her own clothes. Dorothy and Carl lived in Manhattan, and wintered in Florida until Carl's death in 2000. When Alzheimer's advanced to where she could no longer live alone, Dorothy moved to New Mexico to live near her close cousin Marjorie Brooke, and under the loving care of her nieces Jacqueline Porter of Las Cruces, and Ricki-Ellen Brooke of San Francisco. In New Mexico, Dorothy charmed everyone who met her with her ability to identify all the actors and actresses from the old Hollywood films, her inclination to correct her care-givers' use of the English language, and her skills at recounting excellent, if sometimes ribald, jokes. Dorothy will be especially remembered with love and gratitude by her nieces, Jacquie and Ricki, for the life-lessons she taught us: to smile through difficult times, to use wit to counter adversity, and to live wholly in-the-moment, with grace, and grit, and impeccable grammar. Dorothy's family thanks the staff of Mesilla Valley Hospice, Home Instead, The Heritage, and all the very special companion-caregivers that Dorothy had while living at home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Alzheimer's Association (http://www.alz.org/). Charlie was the eldest son of a founding family of Dona Ana and Las Cruces. His father was Charles Madrid Sr., an American Indian leader, a banker, farmer and rancher in the Mesilla Valley. His mother was the beautiful Irish, Jennie Barncastle of Dona Ana. She was a descendant of Union Soldier John D. Barncastle, who came to New Mexico in the California Column during the Civil War. These soldiers were some of the first non-native, non-Hispanic settlers of the Mesilla Valley. Charlie's beautiful, devoted wife of 70 years is Virginia (Mabel) Madrid, daughter of John Fitch and Juanita Triviz. Like his father, Charlie was a leader of the Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe, Pueblo of San Juan de Guadalupe and served as Tribal Chairman for over twenty years and was instrumental in tracing our tribal history in this region back to the 1400's. As a young man, Charlie was often seen riding his horse between Las Cruces and Dona Ana where he visited his Barncastle cousins and courted the love of his life, Mabel Fitch. Charlie joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 where he proudly served in the South Pacific theatre during World War II. Thereafter, he also served in the U.S. Army. While in the military, Charlie was a competitive boxer. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from NMSU in 1956. This included the study of animal science. He subsequently worked for and retired from the management of a dairy for the U.S. Dept. of Justice. Charlie enjoyed life fully and had many interests. He cultivated an organic fruit and pecan orchard in San Isidro, North of Las Cruces. He had a life-long love of nature, the outdoors, horticulture, the animal kingdom and astronomy. As a master gardener, he grafted and grew many varieties of grapes, peaches, apricots, figs, and pomegranates and was proud of his homemade wine. As a beekeeper he was featured in "The Mother Earth News" magazine and spent many years surrounded by his magnificent chickens and roosters that greeted him each dawn. Charlie was an expert hunter who took the time to teach his sons and nephews hunting skills such as shooting, tracking, and bow hunting on horseback. He taught many others hunting skills including camouflage, portage, marksmanship, and Indian hunting rituals and traditions. Charlie was very well read and especially interested and knowledgeable about American Indian history and civil rights for all people. This was a passion that he shared with his children and all who knew him. Charlie will be remembered for his forthrightness, keen sense of humor and the mischievous twinkle in his beautiful green eyes. He will also be remembered by his family and friends for his wisdom, insight and vitality. Charlie was preceded in death by his son, Michael Madrid, and siblings, Mary Paredes, Henry Madrid, and Geronimo Madrid. Author: marcenath Surnames: Eubanks, Hedges, Merle Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4916/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Shelton Eubanks passed on to our Lord at his residence in Las Cruces on Tues, Nov 2nd. He was surrounded by his loving family. He lived a full life with many friends and was an inspiration to those who knew him. He was one of nine children born to Shelton and Virgie Eubanks in Vernal, Mississippi on August 21, 1935. He attended school there and at nearby Leakesville. In 1957, he married Deanna Hedges and shortly thereafter became the father to Jodie and Jimmy Eubanks. Shelton retired in 1988 from White Sands Missile Range after proudly serving 33 years as a civilian employee. During that time, he played a key role in the National Range Telemetry division where he and other range personnel monitored and reported on critical long-range missile performance parameters during the cold war testing years up to and including NASA Space Shuttle missions. He oversaw the early development of some of the Range's very first advanced tracking stations which are still in use near the major! launch complexes east of the WSMR main post area, as well as some of the remote tracking sites at the mid and up-range areas. He was an outdoorsman and loved the time spent with friends and family, whether he was out hunting, fishing, or both. After retirement, he was always busy with many different projects as he had many talents. He became an avid gold prospector and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Shelton was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason at his home lodge, Jornada Lodge #70 in Mesilla, NM on Sept 8, 2010. Although he was hampered by health problems during the past few years, he did not let that keep him from doing the things that knew were important such as making sure his loved ones were safe and, most important, taking care of his loving wife of 53 years. His compassion for friends and family was one of the most endearing qualities he possessed. He is survived by his wife Deanna, children Jodie and Jimmy, grandchildren Jason and Nicole, brothers Wayne and Nolan, and sisters Jean, Avis, and Eva-Ray. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ruben and William (Bill), and sister Ruby-Merle. He leaves behind a legacy known only to those who were fortunate to have been blessed by his friendship and wisdom. A brief service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sat, Nov 6th at the La-Paz Grahams Funeral Home, followed by interment at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. As a final note, Shelton wanted those who knew and loved him to know that he'll "be waiting on the porch swing". Services have been entrusted to the care of La Paz - Graham's Funeral Home 555 West Amador, Las Cruces, NM 88005. Branigan, who was born in 1847, fought for the Union in the Civil War, joining the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the age of 14. Known as Capt. Branigan, he settled in Las Cruces, where he would hold the offices of postmaster, assessor and many other "positions of trust and honor" in the community, according to his 1925 obituary. When his wife, Alice M. Branigan, a schoolteacher who was a native of Cook County, Ill., died in 1932, she bequeathed to the city a gift that has never stopped giving: A donation of $35,000 that funded the building of a city library. The original Branigan Library - a Pueblo-style building at the corner of Main Street and Hadley Street - was dedicated to the city of Las Cruces on Oct. 31, 1935. That building is now the Branigan Cultural Center. Alice Branigan also left $30,000 for books, and today the interest on that principal continues to buy books for the Branigan Library - in fact, it generates approximately $40,000 a year for new books, according to Lynette Schurdevin, library administrator. In today's dollars, the combined $65,000 would be the equivalent of $1,029,000, based on an average annual inflation rate of 3.78 percent. The library officially opened and began circulating books 75 years ago, on Nov. 7, 1935. Branigan Library will celebrate its 75th anniversary this Sunday. "We're very excited to celebrate our 75th anniversary," Schurdevin said. "And we look forward to another 75 years." Branigan Library was actually Las Cruces' second public library. In 1927, the Woman's Improvement Association established a circulating library in the WIA Club House that still stands on Reymond Street across from Pioneer Women's Park. WIA members, including Alice Branigan, took turns serving as librarians. The WIA donated its 1,000 books to the new public library in 1935. Mayor J. Benson Newell chaired the library committee that hired Mrs. Effie Carmichael of Dallas as librarian for the new public library. According to a report in the Las Cruces Daily News, Carmichael had 15 years of library experience and had been "trained in leading Western libraries." Carmichael held the post until 1942, when she was succeeded by Mrs. W. Grover Murphy. Mrs. Maud Sullivan, director of El Paso's public library, gave the keynote address at the 1935 dedication ceremony, pointing out that being a librarian "is anything but a genteel profession." Mrs. O. H. Brown, chairman of the program committee, was praised by the Daily News for arranging "a delightful program." The Santa Fe-style building, designed by architect Percy McGhee, won recognition and admiration for its appearance. Above the circulation desk was a mural by well-known artist Tom Lea: It depicted the 16th century arrival of Franciscan friars in what is now southern New Mexico. The foreman of the construction job was Henry James, author of "Curse of the San Andres." In 1938, the library received national recognition as one of the 24 most beautiful small public library buildings in the United States. "Architecturally, the building is a fine example of early New Mexico design," the Daily News stated. In 1967, it was deemed a building of historic significance by the Do a Ana County Historical Society. The original library had shelf space for 6,000 volumes and stack space for an additional 25,000 volumes. The reading rooms could comfortably seat 65 patrons. The library began children's summertime story hours in 1937 in conjunction with the State College Story League. The library featured a community auditorium that was used for many civic functions such as children's programs, dance programs, plays and meetings. The building was renovated and remodeled in 1961. In the 1960s and '70s, the library had its own cat, who went by the moniker "Mr. Nero." There was also a parakeet. (There is no written record of how the cat and the parakeet got along.) In her will, Alice Branigan stipulated that "said building shall be held in perpetuity for library purposes ... said building shall be known as the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, and shall be so inscribed upon its portals." The newspapers felt it was an excellent tribute to the Capt. Branigan, the man with the bushy moustache and captain's hat whom the Daily News called "a New Mexico pioneer." The current library building at Picacho Avenue and Main Street, once the site of the Lucero Elementary School, was dedicated on Nov. 21, 1979.
