Author: marcenath Surnames: Torres, Matta Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4971/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Rita M. Torres, 79, of Las Cruces entered eternal life on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 7, 1931 in Balmorhea, Texas, where her fondest childhood memories were made. Rita is survived by her husband of 60 years, Mark Torres; her sons, Mark Alan (Valerie), Frankie (Patsy) and her daughters, Anna Lee, Josephine, and Kathy Provencio. She also raised two grandchildren as her own, Katherine Ware and Jose Gonzalez. Additional survivors include sisters, Eloisa Vasquez (George), Santos Guevara (Manuel), and Theresa Ramirez; a brother, Frank B. Matta (Barbara). She leaves behind 15 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren, and an abundant number of nieces, nephews, great friends whom she considered "family". She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Maria B. Matta; a daughter, Bernice Jones; sisters, Delila Herrera, Dora Telles, Patricia "Amor" Mata and brother, Jose Matta. In 1964, Rita began her 43 years of dedicated service to Doña Ana County, when she was hired in County Clerk's office by former County Clerk, Lorraine Gutierrez. While serving in the Clerk's office, she was elected as Doña Ana County Clerk in 1973, serving a total of four full terms through 2008. Campaigning for public office brought her great joy and with every victory came the honor and privilege of serving the public of Doña Ana County, which she cherished. She also served several years as the Chief Deputy Clerk for Gladys Hansen. Rita was instrumental in the Clerk's affiliation with New Mexico Association of Counties. Based on her knowledge and experience, she was frequently consulted and queried by other County Clerk's and Secretaries of State. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and would gladly support any fundraiser that included a game of Bingo. She was a very religious and happy lady, and Bingo always made her content. She was the #1 fan of many of her grandkids at all of their sporting events. She would spend endless summers at the ball parks cheering on all of her loved ones. She loved music and especially dancing. She would dance the night away at family gatherings. God Bless the Angels that ask her to dance in heaven for she has never-ending dancing shoes. Even though she was well known and highly respected in the community for her work ethic and accomplishments, those are not the characteristics she was loved for. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and great friend. To know her titles, is to respect her, but to know her for her character is to love her. She will forever be missed and will never be forgotten. The family invites everyone to join them at the celebration of Rita's life. A Memorial Service will be held at the Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3600 Parroquia Street in Tortugas on Saturday, December 4, 2010 to begin at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers her family request that donations be made to La Posada-Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Avenue, Las Cruces, NM 88005. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Fordham Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4967/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Former Herald pressman Don Fordham dies Served with Navajo Code Talkers during WWII The Monterey County Herald Herald Staff Report Posted: 09/15/2010 06:31:27 AM PDT Don Fordham, a longtime production manager and press foreman at The Herald, died Monday after a lengthy illness. He was 89. Mr. Fordham was born May 13, 1921, in Colorado and came to work at the Monterey Peninsula Herald in 1953, when the newspaper was located at Washington and Pearl streets in downtown Monterey. He started his career as a pressman apprentice in 1938 at the Santa Fe New Mexican, but his career was interrupted in 1941 when he went into the U.S. Marine Corps after the start of World War II. He saw service in the South Pacific, including the landing at Guadalcanal, and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of gunnery sergeant. Because he had been raised with Navajos, Mr. Fordham was assigned during the war to work with the storied Navajo Code Talkers, a group that transmitted secret communication on the battlefields that the Japanese could not break. After working in the circulation departments of the New Mexican and the Las Vegas Review Journal, he returned to pressroom work at the Twin Falls Times-News in Idaho. He became press foreman at The Herald in 1970, after the plant had been relocated to Pacific and Jefferson streets. Three years later, he was named pressroom superintendent, and in 1985 he was promoted to production manager in charge of the pressroom, composing room and engraving department. In 1985, he began the search for a new press and settled on the flexography model still being used. The press was considered revolutionary at the time in that it uses a water-based ink that is environmentally superior. Mr. Fordham retired from The Herald in 1991. Mr. Fordham's son, Jim, said his father worked for a period as a guide at the Grand Canyon to recover from a serious bout with malaria he picked up during the war. "He liked (being a guide) a lot and seriously considered becoming a forest ranger," Jim Fordham said. "But he went back to the New Mexican. "Newspapers. It was his calling." In addition to his son, Mr. Fordham is survived by his wife of 49 years, June; a daughter, Linda Myers; and three grandchildren. Memorial services are pending. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of the Central Coast. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NMDONAAN] Fetterolf Mary Ida Obit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Fetterolf, Hoffman, Johnson Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/4956/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mary Ida Fetterolf entered this life on 10 March 1913 and quietly crossed into a new life on 21 November 2010. Known to her many friends at Golden Mesa Retirement Community as "Little Mary" (even though she herself hated any reference to her tiny stature), her diminutive size was the only thing small about her. At nearly 98 years old, she still had a childlike sense of wonder for all living things but especially for babies, both human and animal. She was fascinated by unusual stones and plants and, when she moved to Las Cruces, NM, in 2007, took special delight in watching clouds and their shadows play across the Organ Mountains. She was the last living child of William A. and Sarah Hoffman Johnson of Catawissa, PA, where Mary was born and lived for 95 years. Even though she was the oldest in the family, her brothers John and William, as well as her sisters Charlotte and Dorothy, all died before her. In 1938, she married Harold E. Fetterolf, who died in 1979 after sharing 41 years with her. Mary and Harold would have loved having a large family of their own, but God granted them only one child, Pat A. Jonker, and one grandson, David A. Getkin. Pat, David, and David's two children are all living in Las Cruces. Mary will also be missed by her son through marriage, Pat's husband Donald E. Jonker, and his daughter Dana in Ocala, FL, with her husband and two daughters. A talented artist who should have been a teacher, Mary created finger paints from starch and natural colorants before they could be purchased in stores and taught her daughter the letters of the alphabet by turning each one into a different face. High school students knew who could create the decorations for their dances and proms, and Mary's living room was often filled with life-size dancing cutouts and crepe-paper flowers. At the United Methodist Church in Catawissa, PA, she was known as a living library of Bible stories and could be counted on for Vacation Bible School each summer. Following cremation of the body, Mary's life and talents will be celebrated at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Las Cruces where her family has restored a stained glass window in her name. Although she loved flowers, Mary preferred that any remembrances become donations to St. Paul's, whose members so graciously welcomed and cared for her in the last years of her life. Services have been entusted to the care of La Paz - Graham's Funeral Home 555 West Amador, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
