His loving wife, Lily, of 51 years, will cherish their life together filled with the joys and sorrows of hard work and family life. His daughter, Patsy Lozano (Alejo) and his son, Bobby Garcia (Amalia), mourn deeply his passing, but take courage that he has prepared the way for them. His memory will be held dearly by his brothers, Felipe and Arsario "Chayo" of Mesilla and by his sisters, Angelita Montoya of San Pablo, Juanita Giron of Las Cruces, and Matilde Estrada of Mesilla. His grandchildren, Isaac and Elizabeth Martinez of Mesilla, Orlando Martinez (Selena) of Santa Fe, and Andres, Diego, Maya, and Roberto Garcia II of Mesilla; two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Tristan Martinez of Santa Fe, will hold his memory sweetly in their hearts. Numerous nephews, nieces and cousins will remember him fondly and his old friends will reminisce, ".en aquellos tiempos." Cheno was born January 21, 1935 in Mesilla. He and his wife, Lily were strongly motivated by his distinctive traditions that came to be the mark of a "Mesillero"; commitment to hard work, devotion to family and friends and having fun. Cheno attended Mesilla Elementary through the eighth grade when he went to work to provide for his father and younger brother. His first job with the McKinney's Grocery store at Four Points on Union Avenue and Highway 28, was a job that would last him through retirement forty-three years later. Later, Cheno went to work at the McKinney's in Mesilla Park. He ! became familiar with customers who came in to purchase their groceries many who later became well known in the Valley. As the company grew, Cheno was many times offered a supervisor position with the company, but each time turned it down, preferring to work was a manager at any of the stores. He thrived in the hands-on atmosphere of the store. Eventually, his experience became an invaluable asset to the growing company. His firsthand experience with the intricate and tangled details of operating a store made him a primary resource for organizing the smooth opening of other stores throughout the Las Cruces area. It was meticulous and painstaking work, but Cheno was gratified that his commitment to hard work was a source of pride for himself and his family. Cheno had a great sense of humor and took great pleasure in camping often organizing trips with his children, their cousins and friends. Rabbit hunting was a favorite sport on the west side of Mesilla. He also loved to play softball and basketball with the kids from the neighborhood. It was a long, arduous but highly gratifying journey from the times when he worked in the fields with his parents, to the time at work when Cheno bent the rules a bit to be generous to those in need, to when his children, Robert and Patricia were born and had families of their own. Visitation for Cheno will begin at 6 PM Friday, January 7, 2011 in the Basilica de San Albino, 2290 Calle de Principal in Mesilla where the Prayer Vigil is scheduled for 7 PM. Family and Friends will join together to celebrate the Funeral Liturgy at 10 AM Saturday, January 8, 2011 in the same church with Reverend Richard Catanach officiating. Cremation will follow and inurnment of cremains will take place at a later date in the San Albino Cemetery. Her daughter Susan was with her when she died. She was born Barbara Lou LaGree, on June 6, 1925, in Newton, Kansas, to Blanche (Barbee) and Matt LaGree. Her family endured many hardships during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. Barbara's father was able to find work as a mechanic for the Santa Fe Railroad, and a much happier life began for the family in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1943, she met and married Thomas Hunter Crary. They and their Cocker Spaniel, Splash, started their life together in Old Town in Albuquerque. On June 17, 1945, Barbara and her older daughter were baptized at the Church of Our Savior in San Gabriel, California. Thus began Barbara's lifelong devotion to the Episcopal church and to her Christian faith. At the end of World War II, Barbara and her older daughter were on the first boatload of dependents to land in Okinawa where they joined Tom. After Tom left the service, he and Barbara and their two daughters lived in Deadwood, South Dakota, and in Jackson, Michigan. In 1982, Tom and Barbara returned to New Mexico for their retirement. They lived in Las Cruces, where Barbara leaves behind many friends. Their retirement years were shared with two good and faithful companions: a Cocker Spaniel named Chica, and then Corky, a "pound puppy" they rescued from the animal shelter. Barbara love to swim, play golf and bridge, and spent many hours at the Las Cruces Country Club. She was faithful in her church attendance, was active in altar guild, helped in the soup kitchen and was a Daughter of the King. During the final years of her life, she was unable to walk due to post-polio syndrome, and was in almost constant pain. She faced these challenges with grace and good humor, earning the sobriquet of "steel magnolia." Barbara was preceded in death by her parents: by her brother, Rodney LeGree: and by her husband, Tom. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Scoville and Susan James; by a niece, Margaret Sager: by her grandchildren, Rob Scoville and Suzanne Scoville; by her granddaughter-in-law Colleen Flanagan; by her great granddaughter Dora Scoville; and by her care-giver and friend, Cindy. She quietly slipped into heaven on the evening of Monday, December 27, 2010. Grace moved to Hatch, New Mexico in 1941 where her son Sammy Lloyd was born. Later, Paul Jean was born in Michigan. Cheryl De was born in Las Cruces after they relocated to Las Cruces due to White Sands Missile Range employment. Grace or "Nick" as her family affectionately called her never left Las Cruces after moving here in 1951. Grace used to say, "Once you get the sand stuck in your craw, you have to stay here." Grace worked in many jobs in Las Cruces. She was a "lunch lady" at Mesilla Park and Hermosa Heights elementary schools during the 1950's and 1960's. Grace began working at NMSU in the Bookstore after leaving her job as a "lunch lady." Though Grace never finished high school, she studied and took her GED and achieved the highest score ever at the time. She took college classes to learn bookkeeping. This enabled her to go from the NMSU Bookstore to Auxiliary Services where she did the payroll for many departments including the Housing Department. Grace became the box office manager of the Pan American Center until her retirement in the late 1980's. Grace retired to continue the home care of her mother, Goldie, who had advanced Alzheimer's disease until her death. Grace loved Jesus and taught Sunday school at Grandview Baptist Church and wrote and printed the weekly bulletin. She was a member of Sierra Vista Community Church the last nine years of her life and they became family to her. Grace loved music and sang in the choir at church, even after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She was a master at shopping and was seen at nearly all the local estate sales. The women of the family often spent the day shopping in El Paso and found the best bargains. Grace also loved to cook and enjoy her cats and dogs. The Dodgers were always her team and she loved cheering for the NMSU Aggies. Her favorite things on television were sports and old movies, especially when they were in black and white or musicals. Grace continued reading until her death. Each moment of each day was new and fresh to her in the last years of her life and she showed an inner joy to anyone who cared to notice. Grace was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease after surviving cancer treatment in the late 1990's and several mini-strokes in 2000. She lived in the Village at Northrise until June 2004 when she moved in with her daughter, Cheryl. Grace was active in Dona Ana County Senior Olympics for many years and last competed in New Mexico and Dona Ana County Senior Olympics in 2010 for which she represented the Dona Ana County Olympics for the Courage Award at the state Olympics. Grace was often seen in Munson Center eating lunch or chatting with those who came. Her Sierra Vista Community Church family saw her each week at services and saw the joy she had during worship services. Grace showed courage in the face of adversity and was a model of leadership even when things were difficult. Grace was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Turner, her mother, Goldie and a grandson, Aaron Christopher Young. She is survived by her brother Charles Turner of Paul's Valley, Oklahoma, and Wanda Tyrell with husband George of Muskogee, Oklahoma; her children Paul of Eagle River, Alaska; Sammy, daughter Cheryl (Young) and son-in-law Henry of Las Cruces; her grandchildren, Danny and Maret of San Antonio, Texas, David of Houston, Texas, Alessandra (LaChapelle) Roach of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Robin of Anchorage, Alaska, Ryan of Albuquerque, Heather (Young) Thatcher of Las Cruces and Christy (Young) Harmon of Centennial, Colorado; eight great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
