    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Pelayo, Gardner Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5152/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Members of the 200th and 515th New Mexico National Guard Coastal Artillery endured three years of hell at the hands of their Japanese captors during World War II. To remember the perseverance and bravery of those men captured and forced to march 65 miles -- all while being beaten, tortured and killed -- families of the Guardsmen have joined to erect a new memorial at Deming's Veterans' Park. "A bunch of us associated with the Bataan veterans have wanted, even when we did the memorial at the Bataan school, we wanted to put all the New Mexico boys that were in the Bataan March on something," Thelma Pelayo said. Pelayo's husband, Lee Pelayo, served in the NG from 1940 through 1946, she said, along with his brother, Lee Jay Gardner. "They were in a prison camp for three-and-a-half years," she said. The forced Bataan Death March took place in the Philippines in 1942. Japanese soldiers brutally forced approximately 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war to march to a prison camp. Among those seized were members of the Army, Army Air Corps, Navy, Marine Corps and the National Guard, whom, according to bataanmarch.com, were subjected to malaria-infested conditions, half or quarter rations and outdated equipment as they fought the three-month long Battle for Bataan before being captured. Those who survived the march through the blistering heat of the Philippine jungles were imprisoned and subjected to inhumane treatment at the hands of their Japanese captors, who believed the prisoners were subhuman. Pelayo did not have a date for the memorial's completion. City administrator Richard McInturff said the last monument at Veterans' Park was erected in 2003 and was dedicated to WWII veterans. 1. [NMDONAAN] Leupold Jane Elizabeth Long Obit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: Leupold, Long Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5140/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Jane Elizabeth Long Leupold, 46, entered eternal life to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on January 14, 2011. Jane Elizabeth Long was born in Norfolk, Nebraska, on August 9, 1964, and immediately was placed in the arms of her mother and father, Lowell and Phyllis Long, who loved her and nurtured her all the years of her life. After graduating from Norfolk High School in 1982, and earning a two year degree in architecture at Northeast Community College in Norfolk in 1984, Jane moved to New Mexico, settled in Las Cruces, graduating from New Mexico State University in 1988 with a degree in marketing. She used her marketing degree as an advertising executive with Las Cruces TV Cable for the next five years. On March 25, 1989, Jane married Keith Leupold, and they had almost 22 years of joyous married life. She made the decision early in her marriage to make her immediate family's ambitions her own, so quitting her job, she plunged into raising her three children, Zachariah Alan, born in 1994, Brita Noel, born in 1996, and Nathan Courin, born in 2001. Her days were filled with volunteering at Tombaugh Elementary, serving in many capacities at Bethel Bible Fellowship, and nurturing relationships with her husband's Las Cruces High School Bulldawg volleyball players. She loved teaching Vacation Bible School, giving spelling tests for Nate at Tombaugh, joining with Brita to create delightful desserts, watching Zach wrestle, and being the life of the party wherever she went. Stricken with breast cancer in the summer of 2008, and placed in the public's eye during her courageous battle, she exuded love and determination as she waged her war against a relentless foe. In 2010, sensing that she might not win the battle, she gathered up her husband and her kids and flew off to Paris and London to make memories. Jane is survived by her husband Keith, sons Zach and Nathan and daughter Brita. She is survived by her mother and father, Lowell and Phyllis Long of Las Cruces, and by a sister, Kathy Long Hegler, and her husband Bob, from Cortland, Nebraska. Jane is also survived by her nieces Sarah Loring de Garcia and husband Roberto, of Monterrey, Mexico, Michelle Frey Cochell and husband Matt of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Ana Balka and husband Steven Ypma of London, England. She is also survived by nephew Scott Loring and wife Heidi of Russellville, Missouri. Jane is preceded in death by her sister Patricia Long Loring. A celebration of Jane Leupold's life will be held at First Assembly Church at 3:30 Wednesday, January 19th. Attendees are asked to wear red or blue, in honor of Janie's LCHS Bulldawgs, pink in honor of her struggle with breast cancer, or any other bright and joyous colors to help celebrate a life cut short, but a life well-lived. For those wishing to honor Jane's memory, the family requests that donations be made in Jane's name to Cowboys for Cancer Research, or to an education fund for the Leupold children. That fund has been set up in care of Bethel Bible Fellowship, and checks can be made out to Bethel Bible Fellowship, designated for the Leupold education fund, and mailed to BBF, 3890 Stern Drive, Las Cruces, NM 88001. As Janie went through treatment, she claimed Job 23:10 as her special Bible verse: "For he knows the way that I take, and when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold". Armed with this verse, she marched into Mayo Clinics in Rochester and Phoenix and the Southwest New Mexico Cancer Center in Las Cruces, and as she went through tests and procedures, handed out chocolate to everybody she encountered. She said "Everyone can use a little chocolate". Published in Las Cruces Sun-News on January 19, 2011 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NMDONAAN] McClure Barry Obit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath Surnames: McClure, Anderson, Farrow Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5139/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces resident Barry McClure was remembered Wednesday as a champion who coached others to be champions in sports and especially in life. McClure, 59, died late last week at his home, and a memorial service was conducted in the chapel at Getz Funeral Home. "He's a good person with a good understanding of people," said Orin Richburg, coach of the New Mexico State University women's track and field team. McClure was a volunteer assistant coach the past two years at NMSU, working with long jumpers. McClure was a seven time All-American and a two time national triple-jump champion in the early 1970s at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesburo, Tenn. He was the first MTSU track athlete to receive All-American honors after the university's athletics program joined the NCAA in 1965. McClure was a two-time NCAA triple jump champion and U.S. record holder in that event from 1970 through 1973. He was the first of many triple and long jumpers to train and compete for longtime MTSU coach Dean Hayes. "He really was the beginning of our program's claim to fame as a jump school," said Hayes, in a story published on MTSU's athletics website, www.goblueraiders.com. "At the time, the university was just trying to get its feet under itself socially and in athletics. As an African-American athlete to win multiple NCAA titles, he was very big deal on and off the track." McClure was also an important figure in the integration of Middle Tennessee's athletic program during the 1970s. He was inducted into MTSU's athletics Hall of Fame in 1996. According to goblueraiders.com, McClure and teammate Tommy Haynes changed the triple jump from a relatively obscure event into one of track and field's marquee events. "The triple jump was not a big-time event at that time," said Haynes, of the early 1970s. "Barry and Tommy developed different techniques, which is now what we called plyometrics, we still teach to our athletes today. It really used to be a show, watching the two of them compete together." McClure ended his MTSU career with an NCAA record in the triple jump and the sixth-longest leap in the history of U.S. track and field. "When he and I came (to NMSU) three years ago we had one or two jumpers," Richburg said. "We'll go to a meet this weekend at the University of New Mexico and we'll have seven who will compete. "He brought a great upside, a very positive personality that athletes related well with. Two of our alumni returned to pay their respects when they heard that Barry had died. ... When I told (longtime track star and Olympian) Al Joiner that Barry died last week, his knees kind of buckled." McClure was the owner and consultant of MAC'S Inc., a business specializing in golf outings. He retired in Las Cruces after a lengthy military career. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. for more than 30 years, and served as a board member of the fraternity's El Paso-Las Cruces alumni chapter. He was also a board member of the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association, and was an avid golfer. McClure was born on Dec. 3, 1951, in Carrollton, Ga. He is survived by his wife, Gwenda McClure, his mother in-law, Gloria Farrow; sisters in-law Margaret McClure, Claudette Farrow, Audra Taylor and Gina Harroo; brother-in-law Rodney Farrow; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and golf buddies. Barry was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Frances Anderson, brother, William H. McClure and son, Barry Lamour McClure, Jr. Barry leaves to mourn a devoted wife, Mrs. Gwenda McClure; mother-in-law, Mrs. Gloria Farrow; sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret McClure; brother-in-law, Mr. Rodney Farrow and wife Claudette; sister-in-law, Ms. Audra Taylor; sister-in-law, Ms. Gina Harroo; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, golfing buddies; and best friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions in McClure's honor be made to Barry McClure Junior Gold Scholarship Fund No. 151298 at White Sands Federal Credit Union. Author: marcenath Surnames: Hawkins, McFarland, Web Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5137/mb.ashx Message Board Post: On January 11, 2011 God called Carol Jane Hawkins Home for her eternal dance with Him. Jane Hawkins was born Carol Jane McFarland in Albuquerque, NM on March 09, 1939. Friends and family knew her as Jane.often times as "plain Jane", "calamity Jane", sometimes affectionately called "Thunder" by her husband and she called herself the "Black Sheep of the family". From the moment she was born she was a fun-loving, free-spirited gypsy always looking for an open road to explore. She had an innate curiosity about the world around her. She danced and sang her way through life with all the energy and enthusiasm of a Cannonball! Jane was very gifted. She loved to play piano - "Flight of the Bumblebee" was a favorite. She was highly intelligent and enjoyed learning different languages.she could say hello and good-bye in eight different languages. She was an avid reader and had a book in every room. She enjoyed puzzles, especially crossword puzzles and loved any criminal justice program. She always found time to crochet and sew. She loved music and everybody stayed away from the remote control when tennis was on T.V.! Jane loved her independence. To that end she started several businesses of her own-some more or less successful, others more or less not successful. Regardless, she always remained undaunted and optimistic and blasted her way through each challenge like a Tasmanian devil. Jane was a fierce champion and defender of her children. She was a server-in restaurants, in her family, and in her community. She was quick to laugh, even quicker to forgive. She often told her children not to go to bed mad.just go to bed. She loved animals and they loved her. Every stray cat and dog for miles around attached itself to her. She fed and cared for them one and all. She enjoyed watching, feeding and identifying the birds in her front yard with her husband Bryan. To her amazement, complete strangers would walk up to her and confide in her all their troubles.they would walk away laughing and smiling. Always cheerful, Jane would bring a smile to anyone who encountered her. She always displayed her cheerfulness through her sense of humor, her laugh, and by bursting into song and dance ("Fly Me to the Moon", or "Swing on a Star" were her songs of choice!). She was a delight to be with! Jane married Bryan Kenneth Hawkins 35 years ago. It was not the first marriage f! or either, but was most certainly the one that lasted. Jane is survived by a large and loving family, including but not limited to three children; Steve Webb and his spouse Angie and family, Jamie Hawkins and his spouse Yolanda and family, and daughter Lenora Hawkins; two sisters-Neva Parker and Freda McFarland; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of friends all of whom will sorely miss her. Go with God, Jane. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Sunday January 16, 2011 at Getz Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday January 17, 2011 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev. James Large officiating.
