Not sure this is the correct Roland, but note that his mother was Billy. No mention of Hatch, though. Casa Grande Dispatch (AZ) - March 17, 2010 Deceased Name: Roland Leeman ARIZONA CITY — The life of Air Force 1st Lt. Roland O. Leeman (retired) of Arizona City will be celebrated at the Florence Cemetery with full military honors at 10 a.m. March 17, which would have been his 90th birthday. "We would like to invite the community to come participate in showing our deep appreciation and respect for this American hero and truly remarkable man," said neighbor Gary Kuhn. Lt. Leeman was born on March 17, 1920 in Kansas City. He died on Jan. 18, 2010 at Hospice Family Care in Casa Grande. His mother, Billy Earley, and stepfather, Lynn Earley, moved in 1929 to Florence, where Lynn Earley later became county assessor, then sheriff. Lt. Leeman grew up in Florence and attended elementary and high school there. He left home at 16 to become a cowboy, joined the Army at 19 and was stationed at Hickam Field when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Lt. Leeman told Earl Owens, publicity officer for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1677, in June 2008 that he was charge of quarters (on desk duty) the morning of the attack. "We thought it was the Navy," Lt. Leeman said. "We were under the impression that war games were going to be conducted for a month. Then they called it all off and removed the camouflage off of the airplanes and made them shiny as a line of soldiers on a flight line. Everything was clean and the guns were locked up. I looked out the window in that 10 minutes, and this plane was dropping a bomb on an office there. That was a red dot on that plane, it sure was not a Navy plane." The supply sergeant, who had the only key to the arms locker, was quartered off base. Lt. Leeman, a staff sergeant at the time, and a corporal used an ax to break down the door and distribute the guns. Lt. Leeman had applied to flight school before Pearl Harbor. After the attack, he was sent to flight school for enlisted men at Williams Field in Arizona. He was promoted to flight officer, equivalent to a warrant officer, when he graduated from flight school while World War II was in progress. "After that I flew in England, Africa and Italy," he told Owens. "After I had gotten the 130 points necessary for discharge I took it." Six months later he re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps, which became the Air Force in 1947. He worked on an Air Force rescue boat and was sent to Alaska. He became first sergeant of a squadron and then sergeant major before he was shipped back to the states. He retired from the Air Force as a first lieutenant in April 1960 and became a life member of VFW Post 9972 in Sierra Vista. He is survived by his wife, Angie. Memorial contributions to the Hospice Family Care Foundation or the VFW may be made in lieu of On Wed, Feb 2, 2011 at 12:33 AM, gc-gateway@rootsweb.com < gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: WCarradine7667 > Surnames: Smith, Leeman > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5171/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am looking for information about a woman who, I am told, was a school > teacher in Hatch in the 1920's. Chavez was born in Los Alamos, NM on February 5, 1949 and died in Las Cruces, NM on January 23, 2011. He was the second child of T.J. and Vangie Chavez. Errol grew up in Espanola, NM and with the exception of his sophomore year where he attended school at the New Mexico Military Institute, he graduated from Espanola High School where he excelled in sports, most notable football and basketball. After high school, Errol attended the University of New Mexico where he earned his BA degree in 1972. Errol decided to follow his dad's footsteps by pursuing a career in law enforcement starting out as a deputy sheriff for one year with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department. He then joined the ranks of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration where he served the Nation as a DEA agent for 31 years. During the early years of his career, Errol was involved in DEA overseas operations that targeted illegal narcotics traffickers. He was the first DEA stationed in Medellin, Columbia during the early 80's when Columbia was plagued with violence caused by the various drug trafficking organizations. Errol was also stationed in Barcelona, Spain and Mexico City, Mexico where he battled drug traffickers in those countries. In the United States, he served in DEA offices in Nogales, AZ; Denver, CO; Houston, TX; New York City, NY; Boston, MA; and Los Angeles, CA. His last two assignments with DEA were Special Agent in Charge of DEA's San Diego, CA and Phoenix, AZ offices. As a Special Agent with the DEA, Errol received numerous awards for his performance while assigned to foreign and domestic DEA offices. These awards recognized Errol's performance in overt and covert investigations he successfully completed and for intelligence programs he developed on major domestic and international criminal organizations. Other career accomplishments while at DEA include his election as President of the Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association, his election as President of the International Narcotics Enforcement Officers Association and his selection by DEA to attend the National War College. He was also featured in numerous state and national publications and appeared on television shows such as "America's Most Wanted." After retiring from DEA in 2004, Errol moved back to his native New Mexico to become the Director of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area in Las Cruces, NM. In 2006, he accepted a position with LaserShield Security Systems as Executive Vice President for International Affairs and in 2007 Errol left to pursue other endeavors. Errol, a conservative Republican, always had an interest in politics and in 2009 he decided to seek statewide elective office. He received the Republican nomination for the Office of State Auditor. During the summer of 2010 while campaigning all over the state he began experiencing health problems although he was determined to complete the campaign. In October of 2010, Errol was diagnosed with brain cancer and while he had to suspend his campaign while undergoing treatment, he still received approximately 47% of the statewide vote for State Auditor. Family was always important to Errol and he is survived by his four children: Daughter Lisa Day and her husband Jared of Fort Worth, TX and grandchildren Patrick, Samantha and Kara; Son Dustin Chavez and his wife Karla of Albuquerque, NM and grandchildren Kadence and Kendell; Son Duane Chavez and his wife Jessyca of Las Cruces, NM; and daughter Ericka Chavez and her boyfriend Mario Carvajal of Samford, CT. Chavez; his younger sister Loretta Chavez Johnson and her husband Judge William P. Johnson; and nieces and nephews Damian and Manuel Chavez, Scott and Jennifer Henry and Laura and Paul Johnson. Errol lived a very fulfilling life and his family appreciates the NM State Officials and the Legislators who all paused for a moment of silence in memory of Errol. The family is grateful to those who visited Errol while he was under hospice care, to all those who sent cards and made telephone calls and for all the prayers and support for Errol during his illness. The family is also very grateful to the doctors and especially the nurses at Mesilla Valley Hospice for the loving care given to Errol during his last days. Born November 17th, 1970, Jan had fond memories of growing up in Farr West, Utah, where she would work with her grandma in the flower bed, play games with her cousins during regular Sunday get-togethers, and eat fresh strawberries from the garden with her sisters. Fearing nothing, even as a young girl, she learned to deliver calves in the pasture, feed them at the dairy, and rope them at the rodeo. She graduated with honors from Weber High School where she participated in Future Homemakers of America and Future Business Leaders of America, received the Sterling Scholar for Home Economics, and played the violin in the orchestra. She spent part of the summer after graduation in Manosque, France, as part of an exchange program. She continued her education at Utah State University where she majored in Liberal Arts and Pre-Law, taking the steps to f! ulfill the goal she had set in second grade - to practice law. In 1991, while at USU, she began what would become a nearly twenty-year journey with her new husband and true love, Jason. After attending law school at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, and ready to move "anywhere with palm trees," they settled in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She began working at the Third Judicial District Attorney's Office, eventually becoming the deputy over the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area prosecution unit. In addition to her work with the D. A., she presented classes across the country for the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children. After nine years, she left the D. Author: marcenath Surnames: Martinez, Saldana Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5158/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Beloved Petra Saldaña Martinez, 79, of Castroville, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of January 15. Her family was by her bedside surrounding her with love and prayers. She was the loving mother of nine and devoted wife of Calistro Martinez for 62 years. Most important to her were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved her children unconditionally and made untold sacrifices for them. She will be remembered for her wonderful gifts of warmth, generosity and kindness to all whom crossed her path. She loved her family deeply and was loved deeply in return. Petra was born in February 22, 1931 in Tortugas, New Mexico to a beautiful Native American Apache mother, Guadalupe. After marrying and living many years in El Paso, Texas, she and Calistro packed up their nine children and moved to Castroville, California where she was to live her whole life. As a devout Catholic and long-standing parishioner of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, she was known to many as the "great lady of Castroville." She made friends everywhere she went, and she won over everyone with her sweet smile. As the backbone of our family, our mother was a strong woman who kept her family together. She was a great cook, and she would prepare delicious meals every Sunday so that her children would gather and enjoy special time with her. Throughout the past years in the face of illness, she was an inspiration through her grace and courage. We were blessed to have her and are grateful for her life and presence in our lives. Petra is survived by her husband, Calistro; four sons, Francisco, Gilbert, Daniel and Alfredo; three daughters, Mariaelena, Elsa and Lilly. Two sons, George and Miguel, preceded their mother in passing in 1994 and 2003 respectively, as did two grandchildren and a sister, Francis. Her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law and her 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren will also miss her greatly. She is also survived by one brother, Adolfo, and three sisters, Candelaria, Cipriana, and Maria. One of her many talents was that she never forgot a single birthday of any member of her large family. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 19 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, 11140 Preston Street, Castroville. The funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will also be held at the Church on Thursday, January 20 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by Alta Vista Mortuary, 831-424-0311 Online condolences: www.altavistamortary.com Published in Las Cruces Sun-News on January 21, 2011 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Chávez, announce her passing on Monday, January 17, 2011; born to Remedios Chávez April 11, 1915 in La Magadalena, Chihuahua. She immigrated to the U.S. when she was 12 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen at 25. Married to George R. Chávez on January 30, 1933, she and Papa raised 6 children, Bertha, Delia, Manual, Martha, Ramona, and Rudolfo burying two, Bertha at 8 months and Ramona at almost 14 years of age. "Mama," "Mí Mama," "Mama de Papa" with only one grandchild calling our Mama "Grandma" leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren. Leonila was a highly spirited woman, she was a farmer and farmer's wife and was physically and mentally strong, she was decisive, a deeply religious woman, and always clear about her moral and ethical values. Well respected in the community of Picacho Viejo where she lived almost her entire life. Leonila was a voracious reader of newspapers and magazine! s, writer of letters and of notes. Her sixth grade education served Leonila well helping her family prosper. In her twenties through late thirties, she would help community members with letter writing since in those days not all could read and write. A staunch Democrat, Mama served as a poll worker for many years and voted in all elections, even the most recent national and local elections. An extremely hard worker and because of her impoverished beginnings and maturing during the Great Depression, Mama knew how to save a penny. Working alongside her Viejo growing varieties of chile, all sorts of vegetables and fruits, she was a canner, canning the fruits of her labor. She loved her home flower garden letting it go the last few years. She also raised turkeys and chickens and was better at milking the family cow than Papa. With the slaughter of a pig or two during the holiday seasons, she with her good friend Adelina would clean the intestines to be used for chorizo and morcilla. For many years, she worked during the onion seasons alongside Martha. She also worked the lettuce seasons while raising a family and making ends meet in hard times. With the selling of the family farm in the early 60s, Mama continued making ends ! meet. She managed a local motel for several years, was a night care giver at a local nursing home, cleaned houses, and kept things going. During all these years she never lost her faith in God, or her children. Mama was a great cook, an observer of people, curious beyond compare, with a grounded wisdom surfacing through her many dichos. She loved her children and grandchildren and loved the receiving of cards from them at special times of the year. She also had a special place in her heart and soul for her sobrinas and sobrinos from Colorado who she always kept in contact with. In the last couple of decades Mama became more home bound using her well-earned stature as the Matriarch of the Chávez Clan to give advice, to serve as the moral compass of the family and always letting her children know how to do things better. She was strict and forceful, always had an opinion; and almost to the end, she never, but never minced her words. Mama is survived by her mentioned children and their respective spouses,Marcelo (Delia), Rosa Lee (Manual), Martha (Valentin, deceased), and Rudolfo (Graciela), her grand and great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews. Mama is preceded in death by her three brothers Emilio, Rafael, and Librado, her two daughters Bertha and Monchi, her husband of 63 years George, and her son-in-law Valentin Balizan (Martha). A special thanks to her neighbors Lola and Vidal Gutierrez and family who were always on the look out for her.
