    1. [NMDONAAN] Beltran Antonio pulls ropes for San Jose Church
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marcenath158 Surnames: Beltran Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newmexico.counties.donaana/5189/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Las Cruces Sun-News 02/15/2011 Antonio Beltran, 88, pulls the ropes Thursday at San Jose Catholic LA MESA - In today's fast-paced way of life, dogged dedication to a job is increasingly rare. Employees leapfrog from one employer to the next, and charities have a tough time recruiting steadfast volunteers. But La Mesa resident Antonio Beltran bucks the trend. Though his hands are gnarled from age and arthritis and his strength has diminished a bit with time, the 88-year-old Beltran still faithfully rings the church bell for Mass four times a week in his historic San Jose Catholic Church, built in 1853. Remarkable is that he began the volunteer job 40 years ago, soon after relocating his family to the small farming community. And even more extraordinary is that Beltran, for most of that time, has been completely blind. Though born in Texas, Beltran spent his youth in Mexico, where his family had ties. In his mid-20s, Beltran married and moved back across the border to Fabens. Later on, he moved again, this time to Stahmann Farms, south of Mesilla, where he was hired on as a laborer. Beltran was pruning a tree on a fateful day in 1962, when his eye was poked accidentally with a tree limb. The eye had to be removed surgically. But the injury also gradually affected Beltran's other eye, causing him to lose vision; one family member said pesticide on the tree limb was the suspected cause. The Rev. Robert Villegas, who pastored San Jose parish when Beltran first began ringing the bells, said he attempted to help Beltran after the injury by taking him to a renowned eye doctor in El Paso and then to a physician in Silver City. "They were never able to bring his vision back, but at least we were trying," said Villegas, who now leads Chamberino's San Luis Rey Catholic Church. By 1972, Beltran had lost so much of his eyesight, he qualified as disabled for Social Security purposes. But his vision disappeared entirely in 1986, he said. Beltran and his family moved to La Mesa in 1970, and he ramped up his involvement with the local congregation. He began bell-ringing, developing his own style to alert community members of impending services. Despite his blindness, he began assisting the priest in preparing for services, too, and has graced the congregation with musical talent over the years, playing the guitar and harmonica. In addition to regular services, Beltran maintains another cultural tradition, ringing the church bell to notify the community that someone has died. Beltran's son, Ruben Beltran, 55, of Rio Rancho, N.M., said his father walked to the church from their home, using a memorized path. He did the same to find his way around the church. Family members noted that Beltran always shows up punctually, one hour prior to the start of services. "He doesn't want to be there a minute later," Ruben Beltran said. "That's his custom. Everything he does is pretty much regimented." While Antonio Beltran had reason to turn away from his faith and his church, as some people do, he's instead become more devout. Asked why, he replied that he's actually thankful that the injury was to his eyes, because he is still mobile and able to work. "I would never get angry with God," he said. Villegas said Antonio has avoided self-pity, persistently continuing to care for his own garden and landscaping - even climbing trees sometimes - with his diminished eyesight. "He's never said: 'Oh, I'm blind. I'm going to sit down and do nothing.'" Beltran has seen 26 pastors come and go at San Jose church. Beltran, however, has hardly missed a service since he began the bell-ringer job in 1971, said Pedro Beltran, 57, of San Pablo, another of Antonio Beltran's children. His father missed a few services occasionally when he used to go visit family in Mexico. The bell ringer prides himself on the fact he's never accepted money for his duties. "I don't want it," he said. Last month, Antonio Beltran insisted on ringing for the most personal of losses: the death of his wife, Gregoria. The couple was married 63 years and had nine children together. Having been friends with Antonio Beltran for years, Villegas described him as a "saintly man," a title he said he doesn't use lightly. "He lives in God's presence; you can't talk to him without knowing it," he said. "He's given to prayer and to living in a beautiful way, a solid way." These days, Antonio Beltran's neighbors or family members ferry him to the church in a vehicle, because it's not safe for him to walk. How long will he continue ringing the bell? "Until I can't do it anymore," he said. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Concurrent with raising and caring for her family, Lee worked throughout her adult life in public school systems, state engineering offices, oil and gas industry offices and private law offices, including over 8 years as executive assistant for the Superintendent of Schools, Public School System, Truth or Consequences, NM, and over 30 years as executive legal secretary for various law firms in Truth or Consequences, Farmington and Las Cruces, NM; Colorado Springs, CO; and Long Beach and Los Angeles, CA. 3. I found Billy Earley's obit. See below. What information are you looking for ? Billy Earley's vision shines in Florence: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Arizona Daily Star, The (Tucson, AZ) - March 9, 1996 Deceased Name: Billy Earley's vision shines in Florence Florence resident Billy Earley, who made bandages for soldiers in two world wars and honored the memory of silent-screen star Tom Mix, died early Wednesday. She was 107. Earley, whose long history of community service drew attention far beyond her Pinal County town of Florence, suffered a stroke Tuesday. She died the next day at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. The stroke came two days after Earley, known for her sharp wit and energy that seemed to barely diminish with age, served as grand marshal of the Founders Day Parade in Florence. ''I've met (Calvin) Coolidge, (Franklin) Roosevelt and Harry Truman, but this will be my first inauguration,'' the Democratic Party activist said at the age of 104, when she flew to Washington, D.C., to see Bill Clinton sworn in as president. Earley, a native of New York City who moved to Florence in 1929, wrapped bandages and taught Red Cross first-aid classes during World War I and II. She outlived two husbands, including her second spouse, longtime Pinal County sheriff and assessor Lynn Earley, who died in 1981. She reared three children, taught Sunday school, raised funds for crippled youngsters, hiked the Grand Canyon as a Girl Scout leader and helped preserve Pinal County history, most recently though efforts to restore the old Silver King Hotel in Florence. ''She had a feeling of responsibility to make a difference in the world,'' said her daughter-in-law, Doris Earley. Billy Earley put it another way in a 1989 interview: ''I have been privileged to serve God and country and community. But I do these things because I'm selfish. I enjoy doing them, and they keep me busy.'' In 1980, Earley led a fund-raising drive that persuaded Florence officials to plant 79 cottonwood trees along a street renamed in honor of town founder Levi Ruggles. She also led efforts to restore a vandalized monument to cowboy movie star Tom Mix on the Pinal Pioneer Parkway. Gov. Rose Mofford presented her with the 1988 Governor's Award for Historic Preservation. In 1995, Earley received a Jefferson Award for community service. ''A lot of people didn't even know that she was blind'' since losing virtually all her vision in the early 1970s, her daughter-in-law recalled. ''She used other people's eyes to assist her.'' Survivors include sons Wayne Earley of Phoenix and Roland Leeman of Florence; a daughter, Angie Earley of Tucson; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Florence Cemetery, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Florence. The family suggests memorial donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, 225 E. Butte Ave., Florence, AZ 85232; or to the Florence Historical Society, 715 S. Main St., Florence, AZ 85232. In 1994, Arizona Daily Star reporter Doug Kreutz filed an "earley.htm" in-depth feature about Earley's efforts to preserve the statute of Tony the Wonder Horse, Tom Mix's steed.
