Joab, 64, was living in Grandview Precinct, Union County, New Mexico, at the time of the 1920 census, with: wife, America Inez Beaston Matthews, 51; son Joab Matthews, Jr., 27; son Benjamin W. Matthews, 27; son-in-law Jess M. Swain (widower), 41; grandson Edward R. Swain, 13; and grandson Robert Lee Swain, 9. One of Joab's and Inez's daughters married Jess M. Swain and the daughter must have died sometime after 1911 since the youngest grandson is 9 years old. It is believed through oral history that some of the family moved to Bernalillo County, NM.
