A young preacher was contacted by the local funeral director to hold a grave side committal service at a small local cemetery for someone with no family or friends. The preacher started early but quickly got himself lost, making several wrong turns. He arrived a half-hour late, the hearse was no where in site and the workmen were eating lunch. The pastor went to the open grave and found the vault lid already in place. Taking out his book, he read the service. As he was returning to his car, he overheard one of the workmen say: "Maybe we'd better tell him it's a septic tank."

I would like to make contact with Alta (Mrs. Roger M.) Morris or her next of kin. According to a book on Meacham genealogy published in 1974, Mrs. Morris was then living in Albuquerque, NM, and was tracing the descendants of Jesse Meacham [of North Carolina]. Apparently she had a large amount of data, but it is unclear whether any of it was published or where her notes might be at present. If anyone has information about her I would be grateful to hear from you. Thanks, William William Meacham, Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong. Another email address for me is: wmeacham@hkucc.hku.hk

Posted on: Bernalillo Co. NM Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NM/Bernalillo?read=105 Surname: Trujillo, Vasquez ------------------------- I am looking for additional information on an early day resident of present Bernalillo county. I am expecially interested in more information on where el Paraje de las Huertas was located. Has anyone heard of this property?? Here is what I have gathered about him so far. Diego was my 10g-grand father by way of his son Francisco and a quadruple 11g-grand father by way of his daughter Ana. Diego Trujillo was born in 1613 in Ciudad de Mexico, Nueva España. I do not known exactly when he came to NM, but he was known to have been present in 1632. It is likely he had come as an escort with one of the wagon trains or as a attache to one of the Governors who were assigned by the Viceroy. He owned the orchard and farm known as el Paraje de las Huertas in 1632. The location was described as being about 4 leguas (10.36 US miles) south of Sandia Pueblo. If Diego's measurements were accurate and was directly south of Sandia, el Paraje de las Huertas would have been located very close to present day Candelaria Blvd. and may have been anywhere from 1st street to the river in present day Albuquerque. If the above directions are correct, the Rio Grande Nature Center may have been on the property. The area now called Placitas was at one time known as las Huertas, but it is more east of Sandia than south. (The legua (league) in use in this area at the time was equal to 5000 varas or 2.59 miles. A vara was equal to 32.9 inches or 2.74 feet. At various times in other places a lequa varied from 2.42 to 4.6 miles and a vara from 2.7 to 3.6 feet.) Diego had positions as alferez in 1632, as a soldier escort of the wagon train in 1641 and as Lieutenant General of the Rio Abajo with the rank of Sarjento Major in 1662 with his residence listed as Paraje de Huertas. He had major disagreements with Governor Mendizabal. A great number of records exist that attest to these troubles. In 1661 the Governor had confiscated his Zuni alcaldía. He had a position as Maese de Campo in 1669 and was for a short time Alcade Mayor in 1680 during the exile in El Paso del Norte, Nuevo Mexico. During this time he was vocal about the causes and problems of the 1680 uprising. He soon departed the exile colony, whether with permission or without I have not determined. He died in 1682 in Casas Grandes, Nueva España. He was married to Catalina de VASQUES (daughter of Diego MÁRQUEZ and Bernadina VASQUEZ) about 1633 in Santa Fe, Nuevo Mexico. Catalina de VASQUES was born in 1621 in Santa Fe, Nuevo Mexico. Diego de TRUJILLO and Catalina de VASQUES had the following children: +2 i. Cristóbal TRUJILLO. +3 ii. +-*#@=Francisco de TRUJILLO. +4 iii. Antonia TRUJILLO. +5 iv. +-=@Ana MORENO DE LARA.
