-------- Original Message -------- Subject: New Mexico Death Index Project Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 13:15:49 -0600 From: "Sam-Quito Padilla G." <samquito@nmia.com> To: hello edward, i am hoping that you would be so kind into forwarding this e-mail to the mailing lists which you host in New Mexico. it is about the New Mexico Death Index Project. the below e-mail will explain to you and others about the project. thank you for your help. --------------- Hello there everyone, My name is Sam-Quito, and i am heading a project of the New Mexico Death Index. And this project will be hosted by Rootsweb, the same organization which are hosting this mailing list. We are looking for volunteers and donations for this project. For further information, click on: http://www.nmia.com/~samquito/nmdi.html and the same info is printed below as in that website: New Mexico Death Index Project Many thanks for your interest about the New Mexico Death Index Project. The project is being sponsored by Rootsweb and headed by myself. Let me tell you more about the project. This project consist of the death index complied by the Health Department in State of New Mexico, counties whom issued death certificates between the years of 1899 to 1940. There are two books of death indices are available via the FHC (Family History Center) in Salt Lake City. This project will be typing up an assigned letter or letters in one or both books (via photocopies). When all the letters are completed, Rootsweb will be hosting the NM Death Index on-line for any New Mexican Researcher. Take a look at Californias Death Index on-line, hosted by Rootsweb at to see how the New Mexico Death index will look at: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi We are looking for people whom have MS Excel or MS Works programmes to volunteer and be assigned a letter in the alphabet and type the database. The books are in alphabet order by surname, not by county or date of death. The FHC only has two films of each film for rental. Because there are to many volunteers would be requiring doing this project and spread out over the country, there are not enough films to go around. Therefore, I will be making photocopies for the volunteers to type up. This brings us to another problem. We need donations for the photocopying fund. If anyone would like to donate to this fund, any amounts are most welcome. This project will benefit all researchers doing some kind of work in New Mexico. Send any donation to: Sam Padilla G. 1520 Univ. BL.NE#314 Albqu., NM 87102-1720 (and make the cheque or money order to: Sam Padilla G.) About the format of the death index database as follow: Surname/Givename/Middle/DateofDeath/CountyCode (That is all, simple). Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to help in typing the database for the New Mexico Death Index and for donations for the photocopying fund. For volunteering for the database typing, e-mail me with your mailing address. My e-mail address is: samquito@nmia.com I want to give a BIG THANK YOU the following people on the mailing list whom made a donation (*) or volunteering (#) on the new mexico death index project: Harold Kilmer (*), Robert England (*#), Charles Barnum (*), Tana Collis (*#), Patricia Black-Esterly (*), Annette W. Hi there! I too am interested in knowing if there is a list available showing the old cemeteries around Albuquerque...and who are buried there. Janine in Illinois
Hi everyone. I'm Vikki Gray the Bernalillo County Co-Coordinator. I wanted to mention that there is a list of cemeteries and morticians on the Bernalillo GenWeb site. I used the USGS Cem list and then added on to it from obits, and did a phone listing search of funeral homes. So it is a start. Please let me know of any other cems (include location, type, if abandoned, etc) and I will get them posted. We also have a volunteer named Lynn who is transcribing some of them. If anyone else wants to help transcribe, let me know. In fact, please check out the "Lookups and Volunteers" page for ideas to help us. I know some of you have old photos, diaries and/or yearbooks that could be added. This is your page - feel free to add your contributions! Also - alot of new info has been added to the Bernalillo site lately. Early marriages, lists of Spanish who came to New Mexico, etc. You might want to check in and see the new stuff! The URL is Bernalillo County, NM County Index Good Luck, Vikki Gray, Bernalillo County Co-Coordinator

I sent a post before about cemetaries and only got one response. Let me try again. I am looking to find out where two old cemetaries are in Bernalillo County, and most probably in Albuquerque itself. They are a cemetary named San Ignacio and one named Ladera del Carmen. Many of my relatives were buried there anywhere from 1880-1910. Today I cannot find them listed anywhere. A staff member from Garcia Mortuary in Albuquerque told me that there are many small old cemetaries around Albuquerque that still exist, though they are not working cemetaries. No offices, no upkeep. These cemetaries sometimes don't even have names. But they are still there, the headstones are still in place (what is left of the ones that are there) and you can go in and take a look, if you can find these. Does anyone know if someone has taken an interest in this topic and perhaps has compiled a list of known cemetaries, and addresses where they are? I want very badly to find my great great grandfat! her's grave if I can. I have spent so much time finding him and all about him, that I have a great desire to visit his last resting place. If anyone knows anything or has an idea for me on how to find this, please post or send to me privately. Thank you, Cynthia Lucero Thompson Torrance, California
