    1. [NMBernalillo] NMDI Projects Update
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0RB.2ACI/590 Message Board Post: Hello New Mexican Researcher, I am sending you an update of the latest progress report about the NMDI’s Projects on the Census Index and Section 3 of the Death Index sent to the Volunteers and Donors. I have deleted some section of the update, as they had to deal with only the Volunteers and Donors. = Here is an update on the 1930 Census Project & Section 3 of the NMDI Project. If you tried to contact me at my NMIA email account and have not heard a reply. This is due to problems getting into the email account. It has been fix today! So far, 6 counties of the 1930 NM Census Index have been completed. These counties are Catron, Curry, Guadalupe, McKinley, Roosevelt and Valencia. When all the counties are completed, they will be combined into a searchable database. The Holiday Season is coming around and the greeting cards will be filling your mailbox. I ask all of you to save the used stamps on those greeting cards. I am saving the stamps for our project (I used to save these stamps for charity, but out project need funds). I do have a bag full of stamps, but I need your help in filling up as many bags as possible. When I go to California for a check-up in February, I will be selling those stamps to a stamp dealer and that money will go toward the budget. Depending on what is in the bags, the dealer will pay between $3 to $7 dollars per kilo (in weight). So, please save those used stamps and send them to me after the New Year. In tearing off the stamps, please leave some paper around the stamp, not to tear or cut the stamp/s. And any kinds of stamps (foreign or USA – and duplicates too) are welcome. [address: P. O. Box 53184, Albuquerque, NM 87153-3184] Now, lets get into the budget. Sadly, we are still in the RED. But I have not been pushing the fundraising recently, due to bad health. But I will be blitzing the net to get money coming in. I can use your help. If you have emails of people, but do not want to bother them yourself, send me their email addresses and I will send them an email in the New Year about the project at: [email protected] . The money raised to date is $539.50. And the budget for the Census Project to date is $904.65. We still need to pay back the Section 3 fund of $545.80, so we are in debt of $910.95 (OUCH!). This brings me to something I am unhappy about. There are 6 volunteers whom have not check-in or responded to a number of emails and 2 letters I had sent out. I will make a decision about replacing them (adding cost to our budget, where we have no money) in the New Year. I am hoping the missing volunteers will contact me ASAP about their participation in the project (hopefully it will before the end of the year). This brings me to ask for more volunteers. If you know of anyone whom has a computer with MS Excel or Works (or any word processing programme), please have them contact me at: [email protected] . As we put a deadline for the end of December for this project to be completed. As we are in December and many of you are still busy working away, we have pushed the goal for the deadline of the project for end of March/beginning of April of 2003. And we do ask you (if you have not already) to check in for December. But you will get a break for January, as the next check-in will be at the end of January. I will then be able to make an update report at the beginning of February. When the counties are being completed, Gina will be posting that specific county in their NMGenWeb Archives File website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nm/nmfiles.htm. When the project is completed, all the counties will be combined into an engine search and still leaving the specific counties in their Archives File websites. The NMDI (New Mexico Death Index) also will be in this engine search format once the Section 3 of the project is completed. Section 3 of the NMDI Project is on-hold until we completed the Census Index Project. More info about Section 3 will be reported in the next update in February. Hope all of you have a Happy Holiday Season. Bye for now, Sam-Quito Padilla G. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0RB.2ACI/580 Message Board Post: Hi fellow genealogists! I’m a genealogist just like you are. This is kind of long, but well worth reading! I found a way to use FOIA in genealogy to request records that actually results in moving your search along. In my every day professional work I use the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to acquire records from all areas. The FOIA is a tool that is available to everyone. The request is free but it can be very confusing. You have to know where to send it, you have to have the right request form, a properly worded letter, you have to know what type of information they need to get you what you are looking for. You cannot just send in a generic "find this" request. Using the proper request, the proper form, a properly worded letter you will get the documentation you are seeking. I received 84 pages in the first probate request, two weeks later, an additional 124 pages. All stuff they copied from microfiche. At $ .10 per page. Some of these re! cords went back to 1838. I will send you the forms (both State and Federal), the request letter, what you need to send them in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, where and how to find them. I have compiled a list of each State’s statutes and codes that you will need to reformat the request form for your particular State or the State you are sending the request to. I have included some specific searching directions and examples that may help you. For those of us who have been unable to get to an out-of-town location or to afford a researcher it's great. My email is [email protected] or [email protected] Please only use these for responses. I’ll be happy to answer questions! I will be happy to help anyone with any additional information or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. Any other requests for help, I will send a form. I am requesting $6.58 for paper, copying, assembly, large envelope, and postage costs. This package of information is 22+ pages (and growing) -- and I had no idea this would be responded to in such huge numbers (!!). So, if you’re interested, send $6.58, personal check is ok, [Kathy Lawler] to Genealogy Princess, 20757 Camden Square, #210, Lathrup Village, MI 48076 or use my Paypal address [checking] for $7.00 to [email protected] Either way, don’t forget your address!! I will send you the information the very day I receive your address and funds. Lastly, additional information, new ways I can come up with to use FOIA will be sent to you free of charge and I’ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have. This is strictly to get you! information that will help you gather documents and information to further your search for your ancestors. Thanks! Kathleen Lawler

Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0RB.2ACI/579 Message Board Post: Albuquerque Journal - March 21, 1998 Helen Elizabeth Heckes, 92, born October 14, 1905 in Oklahoma City, OK, died Friday, March 20, 1998. She arrived in Albuquerque in 1930 and made her home here. Mrs. Heckes was married to"Heck" Heckes for 64 years, who preceded her in death in 1988. This lovely and gracious lady with sweet and gentle ways, unselfishly and tirelessly devoted herself to her husband and family. She graced us with her beautiful presence and her casseroles; and made each and everyday one full of positive thoughts. As a mom, she was very special, always there, always supportive, and always smiling. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Honored Ladies of the Shrine. During the war years, she served her country as a nurse's aide. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joby and Jim Wilson; grandson, Bryan Charlton and wife, Linda; granddaughters, Debbie Harley and husband, Wayne, Cheryl Bagley and husband, Dan, and Adrienne Ritzen; three great-grandsons, Jason and Craig Charlt! on, and Jacob Bagley; and three great-granddaughters, Lesla Harley, Joelle Harley, and Katelyn Bagley. This gentle loving lady has left a hole in our hearts that will never heal. We consider ourselves blessed to have been such a loving part of her long and happy life. Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glints on snow. I am sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die. Our special thanks to three very special ladies who took such good care of Helen and loved her like family. Tina, Libby and Viola! Thank You! The family requests memorial contributions be made in memory of Helen Heckes to the Wildlife Rescue Inc. of New Mexico, P.O. Box 13222, Albuquerque, NM 87192-3222.
