NEWMAN, COLEMAN, COOL, GILES, HAZEN, PETERSEN, READ or REED, SUTTON REBECCA NEWMAN, born 1794, died 5 December 1866. Daughter of JOSEPH NEWMAN born 23 February 1768 in Morris County, New Jersey and died 24 November 1848, buried Union Cemetery on Route 519, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey; and AZUBAH MARY READ born 12 September 1773 and died 20 January 1797, burial place unknown. Granddaughter of JOSEPH READ and SARAH SUTTON, and of THOMAS NEWMAN, Jr. and REBECCA GILES JOSEPH NEWMAN married twice after Azubah's death, first to LEAH PETERSEN (1759-1828) and second to ELEANOR HAZEN (1769-1853). The later is supposed to have died in Virginia, and to be buried there. REBECCA NEWMAN married first name unknown LEWIS Rebecca appears on the 1850 census (page 486b) as the resident of the household of ABRAHAM and LEAH COOL. Eleanor Newman (age 81), her step-mother, also lived in the household. I suspect Leah is her half-sister, a daughter of Joseph Newman and Leah Petersen. The Cools were residents of Frelinghuysen Township, where Abraham was a farmer. There is no husband listed for Rebecca in the census. She was 55 years old at the time. Rebecca also appears in the July 1865 settlement of the estate of JOHN HETTY READ, her first cousin. John Read died 14 August 1862 intestate (without a will). He was very wealthy. He also was unmarried and had no children or surviving brothers and sisters. The surrogate court of Warren County divided the estate among his 66 surviving first cousins (both Reads (his father was JAMES READ) and Colemans (his mother was MEHITABLE COLEMAN)). The settlement lists Rebecca as REBECCA LUSE, although her grave stone is clearly marked LEWIS. Am interested in the name of Rebecca's husband and any children they might have had. Also interested in the names and other data concerning Rebecca's half brothers and sisters.
