I had FTM version 9 for quite awhile before I upgraded to version 11. I have many hundreds of notes, probably thousands (I have over 14,000 people in my file) and have never lost a note to my knowledge. It sounds like either the program or more likely the data file got corrupted somehow, maybe by a virus or a hard shutdown (power failure, etc). Did you know that the program automatically makes a backup file (it has the extension *.FBK whereas the data file has the extension *.FTW)? You may be able to recover your file that way, by going to the File menu and selecting Restore from Backup. Also, though it's a little late now, it's a very good idea to protect your information by occasionally going to the File menu and selecting Copy/Export Family File. That creates a duplicate file which you can give a name with a date in it, for example - FamilyFile27July2006.ftw. That will give you another form of backup and also tells you when the file was created. I keep a number of files by date so that I can go back to an earlier version if I mess something up. mel slane Peoria, il -----Original Message----- From: JRflannigan@aol.com [mailto:JRflannigan@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, July 27, 2006 8:19 PM To: NJWARREN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NJWARREN] I lost my notes on Family Tree Maker Hello to all my friends, I have a serious dilemma. I have Version 9 of the Family Tree Maker. I have had better than medium sucess with this program. That is until today when I was going to add some "notes" to an individual. When you have the 'Family Page' open, you can select the icon "More" next to the persons name. That brings up the "Facts dialog" screen. >From there I select the "Notes" icon on the far right of the page. This >brings up an empty page for your information that you would like to write about concerning the family member. I had quite a list of comments on three or four members of my family on their individual pages. Today I entered one of those "Note" pages and to my complete surprise and shock, all of the notes that have been entered over the last 2 or 3 years are gone, and a form type page has replaced those notes. The form type page concerns the cemetery where the person is buried. Further investigation reveals the same thing for about 4 or 5 of my other family members. No one from Ancestry. com, Genealogy.com, nor the people handling the Family Tree Maker program, have any answers. I am really at a lose for what to do at this turn of events. I feel as though the rug has been pulled out from under me. I'm 71 years old and have lost many years of research. I need some help. Has anyone out there come across this with their Family Tree Maker??
