With regard to Stewart Willever's search for the maiden name of Sarah who died in 1888...have you tried sending to Trenton (Health Dept aft 1878; Archives bef 1878, I think.) for her death certificate? The forms had a space for Mother's maiden name, not always filled out. I have had about 50-50 luck with this, but for finding info about people born early in the 1800's, this has been one of my best sources (if you can stand the 4-5 month wait). And more on Osee, yes, I've encountered (Latin for Hosea) this standard definition in name dictionaries. But, in general, the women I've found in NJ are not Catholic and, as you point out, not male. My hunch is that it may have it's roots in a Dutch or French name or nickname. Here are the other times I've found it: 2. Osee Ann Homadiew, 35, born in NJ, m. to Joseph L., in Frelinghuisen Twp. 3. Osee Lanie, 35, born in NJ, m. to James W., in Frelinghuisen Twp. 4. Osea Shackleton, 15, born in NJ, d. of Benjamin, 48, and Ellen, 40, in Belvidere. p. 393A 5. Osee Ann Tillman, 9, born in NJ, living w. Josiah Vandroof, 25, and Charlotte Vandroof, 40, in Hardwick. p. 500A 6. From the web site detailing the descendancy of Simon Hibler of Greenwich Township, Sussex County: *2nd Wife of Samuel Hibler: .....+Osee Pratt Abt 1770 - 1852. 7. From Stephen Emery's web site which has a lot of Warren and Sussex families: Osie Van Ness(3819) was born in Standing Stone Twp., Bradford Co, PA abt 1826.(3820) She married Alanson Taylor. Alanson was born in PA abt 1826.(3821) The motivation for collecting this in the first place is that I find a baptism at the Straw Church (St. James Lutheran, near Phillipsburg) Michael Sauder and wife Rebecca - child b. March 18, 1777, bapt. May 21, 1781 - named Ose - Sponsors Simon Hibler, wife Elizabeth." [The transcriber of these records writes "child" rather than the usual "son" or "daughter," indicating the gender of the child is unknown from the name. Ose was baptized the same day as her sister Elizabeth.] She was female as her later marriage record proved. At least two nieces were named for her as well: !In the 1850 census, Franklin Township, Warren County, p. 458, is the name Osea SOUDERS 22 (giving a birthdate of 1828] Female [born in] NJ. In the 1850 census record for John and Elizabeth Bellis in Northampton County, PA, is a 50 year-old female named Ozee Bellis None of these Osees is my direct ancestor, but as I'm researching the Souders families in these counties, I've been intrigued on its origin.
