What year was your Jesse? Jesse is a biblical name, although not one of the more common ones. It is not a nickname for another given name. First references I've seen to its usage are ca 1750, have never seen it before then. Guess that is when the name first started to become popular, but at that time the name Jesse was extremely rare. After 1800 the name became more common. Actually having a Jesse in those early days is a "good thing" :) the name runs in my Hunterdon Co NJ DALRYMPLE line, and the unusual given name Jesse appeared for several generations, which sure made it much easier to sort out relationships!
