Hi, folks.... I've added records of the above church...baptisms, confirmations, deaths and communicants, for the period 1855 to 1880. You can see these records starting at http://raub-and-more.com/stewartsville/bap.html These records are also presented in the form of scans of the copy I got from Al Hosbach, which he got from Beulah Gangaware. The copy I have is very, very poor quality. My photo software darkened the lettering; I hope you can read at least some of it. Jan Reuther
Jan- I'll be curious if people come up with a screen setting where these can be legible. My (brand-new) laptop doesn't pick it up. I'll admit my eyesight isn't what it was, but I just can't make it out. Jan- I wonder if I can make a deal with you? Would it be possible for you to photocopy those Stewartsville church records and send them to me? I'd be more than happy to pay the costs of copying and postage. If I had paper copies, I could enlarge them at the print shop. In return, I have been tracking two known copies of St. James (Straw) church baptisms and marriages that are follow-on to those already published and posted on your site. If I remember correctly, the ones that are now available go up to ca. 1820. The ones I know about begin where those leave off and go up to ca. 1900. As I understand it, the church no longer has the records and I've never encountered them either at the Marx Room or at the Warren Co Historical Society. Where I know they exist, in both cases they've been inaccessible over the past decade. One set is in the possession of Dick Piatt, a sometimes poster to the Warren list. I've tried every known wheedle to get him to make a copy and send it/share it, but he always has an excuse. (Back 30 years ago, his cousin was the church archivist and I guess that's how he got his set) He is a self-styled "genealogist" and I think he doesn't like to share. The other set is in the collection of the Brooklyn Historical Society. I worked there in the 70s and used the source then but didn't realize then how apparently rare they were. I'm sure the provenance was from the years when Harriet Stryker-Rodda was the Director, a few years just prior to my working there. The historical society library has been - unbelievably - closed to the public for the past decade! I've volunteered there over the past year while they cataloged their collection and now, in Oct., they expect to be open again one afternoon a week. As soon as I can get in there, I intend to copy a few pages each time till I have the whole set. As soon as I get them, I'll be glad to share them with you for your web site. For the record, I would have shared these anyway. I'm just playing here, with the idea of a deal. If you can't do it, don't worry.
