Here's another posting about Warren Co almshouses sent directly to me. I am not the person inquring initially, so suggest any further discussion be posted to the board. Does anyone on this board know whether what was called the MANSFIELD POORHOUSE is what is being described, below? This, below, sounds like Warren Haven which was in Oxford, but I don't think the two were the same or in the same location. Anybody? ----- Original Message ----- From: MARYALIBOCKM@cs.com To: msouders@nyc.rr.com Sent: Friday, September 01, 2006 11:48 AM Subject: Re: [NJWARREN] Warren County Almhouse Records 1908 In March 1830, the Warren Co. Freeholders purchased 390 acres including a house, barn and other outbuildings, and the county poor farm was instituted to house the indigent of the county. This included families with children, single men and women and the elderly. They were given food, clothing and a place to sleep and expected to work for their keep. The farm provided most living essentials and some able bodied persons were bound out to farmers or families who reimbused the county for work performed. To my knowledge this was the only such facility in the county. A modern building was built in 1952 and the name changed to Warren Haven. This is probably when the rules for admission were also changed. Today personal assets and Social Secuity allotments defray the cost of residency. By 1970 the facility had been transformed into a skilled nursing home for the county elderly and maintains an excellent reputation. Hope this answers some questions. MaryAlice
